What are people wearing in London at the moment?

I am off to London with ds in a couple of weeks, we are doing touristy things, Going to the theatre and seeing friends, so all quite casual. I have lost a couple of stone, but not really gained any new clothes. I fancy something a little bit less frumpy for my trip. Particularly some new outerwear, but I am open to other ideas. I am a bit skint so extra points if you find it on Vinted. I am 5'5 and currently a size 12/14. Light brown hair and just little bit blah at the moment.
So, hit me up with some ideas please.

SofaViagra Well, I can’t say my French family and friends are any more likely to judge a flash of ankle or fail to show basic manners about other people’s clothing choices than my English family. And many of them wear beautiful bright clothes. Including my mother who today looked French and fabulous in an emerald cashmere sweater and pink houndstooth skirt. She sent me a selfie from her visit to her sister in Aix, and as I was ill in bed it made my day.

But, you know, don’t let that get in the way of your fun with lazy, outdated stereotyping.

Well said! The French can do colours. France is a big country with borders to other countries so of course there’s more variation in style.

@LaChienneDesFromagesmy SIL’s family love Aix by the way.

If I were you op, I think I'd book a weekend in Manchester or Liverpool instead. Or Newcastle. More fun and less snark.

😉 Florisme you ate always so on the ball!

EggyBreadBrekkie · 28/01/2024 09:00

to all the “oh shut up and stop bothering about what to wear” posters - why oh why are you commenting on a S&B thread, get back in your boxes

This- and the other posters saying the same thing- are missing the point.

There is a difference between caring how you look and caring how other people see and judge you.

The OP wants to blend in, rather than stand out as someone 'up from the country'.

It really is a plea for 'Help me not look out of place'.

I've family in London and a young niece (30s) and she wears the stuff that someone else posted- long coat, baggy jeans, trainers, beanie hat - but it's very much a uniform amongst some women in their late 20s- early 40s - and you don't need comply!

Floisme · 28/01/2024 10:14

Aww thank you LunaTheCat Smile In fairness, I always have fun in London and never encounter the level of snark we see on threads like this.

Well that would make sense. Nobody's judging you for not wearing the imaginary uniform so of course there's no snark!

LlynTegid · 28/01/2024 10:21

@LaChienneDesFromages the French do style, full stop.

I was surprised at the observation about chunky boots and DMs as I see them about still quite a bit.

Floisme · 28/01/2024 10:33

Thank you for your insight DappledThings.

I'm not sure I agree entirely with EggyBreadBrekkie about the op just wanting to blend in. I know she started by asking what people were wearing but in other posts (which I can't find now, sorry) she's talked about how she used to hang out in London, and how since then she feels she's lost her way style wise, and how she wants to rediscover her dressing mojo.

LWSnow · 28/01/2024 10:37

As far as I can see, it's an unremitting sea of black with the odd pair of jeans to mix it up. It's so boring, sit on the tube or go to a museum and count how many people over the age of 10 are wearing anything other than black or denim, they will be few and far between.

OzGirl77 · 28/01/2024 12:01

In Posh Areas, expensive designer crap, in Not Very Posh Areas, any old crap.........

heyhohello · 28/01/2024 20:41

Oh. Another one.

Have 2 v different daughters, 22 and 24 yrs old. Both live in central London:
DD1, perilously short, tweedy/leather or cord miniskirt, clingy long-sleeved top, tights, Converse, a violin case permanently attached to her back and never the faintest whisper of a coat... Alternatively, jeans, any jeans, manky hoody needing a good wash, Converse, violin case. Accessorised with Daunt Books tote. After 6pm, fleecy pj's.
DD2, has a 'proper' type job, so wide wool trews, skinny long sleeve polo neck top, long tightly belted camel coat, Adidas retro type trainers. If going 'out out' likes to go large with strappy heels, satin cocktail dressy type things.
Always hundreds of silver rings - can barely move her fingers, and multiple piercings. Also Daunt Books tote.

Me, fat and old in N4, currently pj's and my painting sweatshirt. Rest of the time a bit drfty and layered, socks and crocs (sorry folks).

Actually on the back of this reply I was out on outskirts of London, saw 2-3 late teen early 20s girls out. One was wearing a slogan crop top with jeans, the other was wearing either a low cut sleeved or sleeveless bodysuit with jeans. They were all slim too. Throwback to my early 20s where I wore the exact same clothes!

I really am super-happy about your daughters.

But I'm not sure that strapping a stringed instrument to oneself and toting a Daunt Books bag accessorised with grubby jeans, is that helpful to OP.

As I said.

I'm super-happy about your daughters.

tuvamoodyson · 30/01/2024 07:44

Probably much the same as I’m wearing in Glasgow 🤷‍♀️
