What are people wearing in London at the moment?

I am off to London with ds in a couple of weeks, we are doing touristy things, Going to the theatre and seeing friends, so all quite casual. I have lost a couple of stone, but not really gained any new clothes. I fancy something a little bit less frumpy for my trip. Particularly some new outerwear, but I am open to other ideas. I am a bit skint so extra points if you find it on Vinted. I am 5'5 and currently a size 12/14. Light brown hair and just little bit blah at the moment.
So, hit me up with some ideas please.

Anything goes doest it?

mynameiscalypso · 25/01/2024 17:39

Literally anything goes. I'm wearing cropped wide leg jeans, clumpy boots and a cashmere jumper at the moment.

bluebeardswife7 · 25/01/2024 17:41

It doest. Unfortunately I am overwhelmed with choice, and lost my shopping mojo when I got fatter. London used to be my playground and I would like to feel good for my visit.

I always find Londoners are a very casual bunch.

ProperSleep · 25/01/2024 17:53

Nearly 10 million people isn’t a ‘bunch’. Grin

@bluebeardswife7 it depends on your personal style. What sort of things do you want to wear?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/01/2024 18:02

Anything you feel good in as long as it's casual.

SunnieShine · 25/01/2024 18:06

Mainly jeans, trainers and padded jackets at the mo. Lot of navy and black.

MorrisZapp · 25/01/2024 18:07

Lord save us from the 'only dress casual in London' crew. Of course Londoners wear everything across the full spectrum of glamour and formality.

Last time I was there I wore a long denim skirt with fabulous knee high boots. Being Scottish I laugh in the face of 'outerwear' in London, I wore my leather jacket and it was fine in December 😊 bearing in mind the tube is boiling and so are the shops etc. I felt great and very London in that outfit.

WhereAreWeNow · 25/01/2024 18:11

Agree with anything goes!
Camel coats are everywhere if you're looking at outerwear.

clowniform · 25/01/2024 18:13

For day-to-day I'm seeing lots of people in oversized wrap coats (neutral shades), with wide-leg cropped trousers and thick-tread Chelsea boots, or midi-length skirts/dresses with opaques and bright suede trainers (esp Adidas Gazelles/Speziales and Nike Cortez). Small crossbody bags are still popular as PP wrote. Lots were going for a bright accent with a slouchy beanie or a big checked mohair scarf during the cold snap.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 25/01/2024 18:13

Last time I was in London, which wasn't that long ago, I think they were wearing clothes.

There's nothing in that whowhatwear puff (blatant sales promotion) piece which made me go "omg, London"
It looks like everywhere else.

(And I'm not taking style advice from anyone who talks about "a pop of burgundy")

BarelyLiterate · 25/01/2024 18:14

You are visiting a British city in the middle of winter, so dress for the weather. In my experience, based on observing a zillion people travelling on the Tube, Londoners wear the same stuff as any other city in England.

Newgirls · 25/01/2024 18:20

Loose long wool coat and flared jeans?

Londontown12 · 25/01/2024 18:21

Yes we all wear exactly what you all wear in your own towns and cities !!
Different styles everywhere !!
my advise be yourself and wear something comfortable so u don’t get to hot ! (Shops and tube )!
Just don’t overdress and feel uncomfortable!

mynameiscalypso · 25/01/2024 18:22

Just to say, it's really mild here at the moment. A number of people at work didn't even bother with coats today.

Amen.

Last time I was there (flying visit last autumn) I wore wide legged jeans with a pinstripe blazer and my husband's Ramone's T shirt under a raincoat. Swapped the T for a silk shirt when we went to a nice restaurant. If I were going now I'd probably switch to straight leg jeans cos too wet for wide legs, and swop the raincoat for a tweed coat and a very fetching wax cotton hat (cos I can't stand umbrellas). And for going out, I'd take some vintage velvet flares which I adore and wear everywhere I can at the moment. Have a good time.

Floisme · 25/01/2024 18:26

Or maybe a tweed jacket rather than a full coat, based on the weather reports.

LaChienneDesFromages · 25/01/2024 18:32

Am I the only one who doesn’t find the way people dress in London much different to the way people dress elsewhere?

I went into London today for work, and wore navy velvet jeans, a brown cashmere jumper (I love navy and brown together) and brown Chelsea boots. With a navy reefer jacket (jigsaw c2005.) I suspect I looked like an elderly This Life extra.

My colleagues were dressed too variously to record. Walking boots, body con, hijab. The students all look quite nineties at the moment.

I met SIL who is still a genuine Londoner (well, an Irish one) and she was wearing gym leggings, trainers and a fleece top.

DNiece, 7 weeks, was wearing a velour all in one. It had teddy ears and I was a bit jealous.

Wear an outfit you feel lovely in, not too dressy. Take a brolly and make sure your bag has room for a book.

FusionChefGeoff · 25/01/2024 18:52

I'm in a fancy hotel with work and I'm seeing LOTS of:

Wide leg jeans or combats
Chunky trainers / platform boots
Long wool type swingy coats

Not me though, I'm wearing black and white checked cropped straight leg trousers, black patent brogues, a floppy white shirt and black v neck (2nd hand) cashmere jumper.

bluebeardswife7 · 25/01/2024 21:25

So, I have a pair of chunky Top Shop boots, some wide leg jeans with a diamanté pin stripe and a short faux fur jacket which is (ironically, a pop of burgundyWink) and I have just bought a cashmere jumper on Vinted. The wardrobe is building people. 🥳🥳🥳

So what’s the collective noun then???

Deargodletitgo · 25/01/2024 22:05

Not London, but was just in Milan. Wide leg jeans, combat boots or trainers, fake fur jackets, lots of black.

Gummybear23 · 25/01/2024 22:06

Wide leg trousers deffo

TheOGCCL · 25/01/2024 22:08

I mean literally anything. And at any one point a certain percentage of people are not from London.

Bottoms are definitely looser. 9/10 people are wearing trainers (average tube carriage). I do think in general we are very very casual.

Those big overwhelming duvet coats are still popular, who knows what people have under those.
