What are people wearing in London at the moment?

I am off to London with ds in a couple of weeks, we are doing touristy things, Going to the theatre and seeing friends, so all quite casual. I have lost a couple of stone, but not really gained any new clothes. I fancy something a little bit less frumpy for my trip. Particularly some new outerwear, but I am open to other ideas. I am a bit skint so extra points if you find it on Vinted. I am 5'5 and currently a size 12/14. Light brown hair and just little bit blah at the moment.
So, hit me up with some ideas please.

Hi OP,

I think your outfit sounds great OP. I would look at a nice silky blouse or shirt or Tshirt to change into with your jeans for evening. Be comfortable and wear layers. I was in London recently and was so glad I wore comfy shoes - I walked for miles each day.

What I observed was that wide leg trousers/jeans are in for all ages, I did not see one pair of skinny jeans or trousers. You can’t go wrong with your boots choice.

I hope you and your DS have a great time.

It's a question that comes up fairly regularly on S&B, usually followed by reams of dismissive posters which only serve to make OPs feel even less confident.

There's obviously no homogeneous London style, but constructive advice and encouragement is usually helpful, because people often do want to look nice when planning a special day out, and whilst no-one would look twice at a woman in an anorak, leggings and trainers, it's possible that the OP wants to make a bit of an effort and stride around feeling pretty good about herself.

If one has lost confidence, for whatever reason, it's helpful to hear people say, 'Yes, wear that, you'll be grand', rather than, 'Don't be stupid, no-one gives a shit what you're wearing'.

This absolute nails it. Nobody comes on S&B to be told 'just wear your comfy old clothes, nobody's looking at you anyway'. They come for inspiration, either because they enjoy style or they want guidance with it. The belittlers should hop it over to aibu to work out their superiority issues.

Well it's the biggest most diverse city in the country. So tbh we are not all wearing the same thing.
Wear whatever you like love.

I think the OP was looking for inspiration, not permission.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 26/01/2024 14:19

Well said @MorrisZapp

I, for one, have really enjoyed the commentary on this thread about what Londoners are wearing and noticing on others at the moment.

I moved out of the city over a decade ago, but whenever I go back, I notice things - changes in silhouette, subtle updates, similarities and differences between London and my current hometown. There may be 10m people there, but there are noticeable trends. Last time I observed a lot of chic all-black outfits, made interesting with a clash of textures- wool, leather, canvas, satin, technical fabrics... very cool and inspiring.

But these threads always bring out the snark, sadly.

Blimey the over-think is incredible. I live in London, work in an ‘cool’ industry and just wear whatever! It’s a massive city with so many people, honestly just wear what makes you feel good and you’ll be golden!

On various days over the last week I’ve worn jeans in 3 different fits, pleather trousers, 2 or 3 styles of coat, chunky knits, fine knits, a blouse/shit and a full on tracky. Shoes have been either trainers or boots (heels and flats). There is no ‘look’, just be comfy and enjoy your visit!

But I have forgotten what makes me feel good 🤷‍♀️

All Londoners are effortlessly super casual and cool and never make any attempt to look nice for anything ever. If you wear anything other than a used, repurposed potato sack, you will instantly stand out as an ignorant try-hard working class northern tourist and people will point and laugh and refuse to let you patronise their establishments. Maybe you could get away with some incredibly expensive jewellery, but only if it’s so ugly that another ignorant northern tourist wouldn’t have a clue how much it cost.

Yes! I always think this when people say "oh, just wear what you like/ what makes you feel good". Part of what makes me feel good is feeling modern, and picking things out of current trends that fit my tastes and make me feel excited about getting dressed.

MoveOnTheCards · 26/01/2024 19:23

With respect, asking what others in a city of millions are wearing won’t really help with what makes you feel good re. Clothes. No one will notice or judge you based on what you wear (or if they do that’s their problem).

Mate, why would you say that?

@bluebeardswife7 I get your question.

Let's talk clothes..

Who you wanna be lady?

LlynTegid · 27/01/2024 07:11

Wide leg jeans have become more commonplace over the last few weeks, I have noticed on my travels around London.

SofaViagra · 27/01/2024 07:27

The only people who dress up for London are tourists. Op, whats your age? 30s?
Teens are still in cropped tops and jackets and wide trousers or jeans, no skinny jeans worn by the young and fashionable.

Athleisure still very much here and sensible for sight seeing, leggings, socks high up on the shin, nice trainers and padded jacket with a beanie, cross body bags.

SofaViagra · 27/01/2024 07:35

And i don't think it's a bad question, there is definitely fashion identity in cities. For example, in Berlin it really is very casual and black, in Rome more colours, white, tan and dressier.
It is understood (well i hope so) that the asker isn't talking about the very poor or rich or eccentrics with this question, it usually means what middle income fairly fashionable, young to middle aged are mainly wearing.

MoveOnTheCards · 27/01/2024 08:04

I’m simply saying the OP really doesn’t need to ‘conform’ to any perceived uniform in London (there really isn’t one). She should just wear what she feels comfortable in.

Sofabum · 27/01/2024 08:07

On the tube this week I noticed DM boots or any chunky boots were not being worn at all. Most people in white trainers which I think is madness in the rain we've had. Clearly they have magic feet that don't get filthy in puddles like I seem to manage.

How can you write that first sentence and expect it to be taken seriously?

thechangling · 27/01/2024 08:23

Lots of good inspiration on this thread Grin

JaninaDuszejko · 27/01/2024 08:58

People don't dress the same across the country. Boden and Joules are aspirational in the parts of the north I live in. I have seen only one other person round here in Veja trainers. We do all own big houses though and from what I've seen that's where people spend their money rather than clothes. Or cars, my workmates spend a lot of time discussing cars 😴.

Londoners are unlikely to have a fancy car or big house so they display their money in what they wear so it is more important there to wear the 'right' clothes. So it is a valid question to ask. And the answers show that. Nobody has said oh I wore Joules chelsea boots, Next skinny jeans and a M&S merino jumper. But where I that would be a normal outfit for a middle aged middle class woman.

Ceit · 27/01/2024 09:03

At the moment it is very mild and the tube can be roasting, so layers. Saw a guy waiting for train in just a light jumper yesterday- probably a visiting Northener. Coats that, to my eyes, look like dressing gowns, are popular right now. I wore my winter wool coat yesterday and I was too hot in shops. Wear what you like. When I go to the theatre I wear wide leg jersey trousers with a fairly dressy looking oversize shirt, big earrings, boots. I always wear exactly the same outfit and have done for years.

Meadowfinch · 27/01/2024 09:08

London in February !

FairIsle sweaters, wool coat or padded jacket, scarf, jeans, boots, gloves.

Well thats right, this thread makes no sense to me

What about what people in Manchester or Liverpool are wearing? Its nonsensical

BoilingHotand50something · 27/01/2024 09:12

Hi OP. Totally understand where you are coming from. I have also lost some weight and still trying to find my style. It’s a good idea to try and get some ideas of what people are wearing where you are visiting. Not sure why people are being so mean.

I am actually a Londoner (born and bred) but have no reason to try and ridicule you for asking this question. Curious what people get worked up about.

Some of the ‘effortless’ style here sounds absolutely exhausting! Making me chuckle.

Meadowfinch · 27/01/2024 09:14

Seriously OP, if you have forgotten what suits you and makes you feel good, go old-fashioned shopping.

Take a day, choose a large shopping centre and try stuff on. Take selfies. Experiment. Have some fun. Then buy a few new things that will give your warmest and most comfortable layers a fresh look. 😊

BoilingHotand50something · 27/01/2024 09:16

Your outfit sounds great by the way!

I am slowly re-finding my style on Vinted and have bought a couple of key pieces that make me feel like the old me and feel like I have a sense of personal style.

Brownie975 · 27/01/2024 09:23

Most people doing "touristy things" in London are tourists. They tend to wear Skechers, jeans, sports leggings, backpacks and waterproof anoraks. I wouldn't worry too much about looking chic if you want to fit in!
