Interview - do heels look dated?

burri · 23/01/2024 19:26

First interview in 15+years. Bit out of the loop. Usual get up is jeans and trainers. This is office job. City centre. Interview will be with two middle age men so they’re not likely to really notice my feet…hopefully…. But will heels look dated or are there occasions like this were they’re pretty much standard? Feel out of touch.
outfit will be wide leg trousers, jacket + top.

Yes, dated.

burri · 23/01/2024 19:30

Edit: a city centre, not the city. Should it matter!

Either way is fine in my view.
Would not go for patent skyscraper heels but a heel is fine, as are flats.

Rosiiee · 23/01/2024 19:32

No wouldn’t do heels. No one wears them anymore and workplaces are much more relaxed.

burri · 23/01/2024 19:35

Shoes need another think then. Was hoping consensus would be heels fine. Come to think of it though I’m going to have a bit of a walk depending to get there so flats probably more practical.

I usually wear loafers if that’s any help. Comfy but still looks like you put in a bit of effort.

MorrisZapp · 23/01/2024 19:49

Nowt wrong with heels. Not the height of fashion but if they give you confidence and make your clothes look better then why wouldn't you? Of course lots of people still wear them. The magazines have been full of seventies style knee high boots, they have a decent heel and very much current. Mine are freaking amazing.

MotorwayDiva · 23/01/2024 19:51

I still wear heels and I would defo wear for interview as give me confidence.
Wear what makes you feel best in

Bornonsunday · 23/01/2024 19:52

Heels are fine for an interview. As long as it's neat it doesn't matter. Save your money for some flats once you start! 😊

Jellybean23 · 23/01/2024 19:56

How long are the trousers? If they touch the floor in flats, you need heels. Will your shoes show much? Could two middle aged men care one way or the other about dated or on trend? Just go with the lowest heels you can

MorrisZapp · 23/01/2024 19:56

Plus the instagrammers can hop it, telling us to live in trainers because 'nobody wears heels any more' then losing their minds over those blimmin Eska platform sandals that look to me to have come from the bottom shelf at New Look. Of course people still wear heels, they just don't call them heels.

Fluffywabbits · 23/01/2024 19:57

Agree with pp about wearing heels if that will make you feel confident and comfortable. I interview regularly and can't say I'd really notice what someone had on their feet unless very 'out there' but either way it isn't going to make me any more or less likely to hire someone.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 23/01/2024 19:58

I think heels are absolutely fine.

I don't and hope no one else makes hiring decisions based on footwear.

PangramAddict · 23/01/2024 19:58

Everyone in my office wears heels. Stilettos, knee high boots, kitten heels etc. Those us who prefer flats end up in very smart Chelsea boots, none of these fashionable chunky soles where I am.

All to say, heels are fine.

Divebar2021 · 23/01/2024 20:02

I would wear a pointy shoe or boot under a wide legged trousers either with a low block heel or a Cuban heel. It looks chic - I’ll try and find a picture.

I work in a very cutting edge industry. The only people that wear heels are the women over 40. It’s very dated.

I am too a woman over 40 but I’ve never worn them and am glad most of the world has caught on to how gross and misogynistic (and uncomfortable) they are! I think in 20 years time they’ll be viewed like we view corsets now.

mynameiscalypso · 23/01/2024 20:05

Heels are absolutely fine. I generally wear trainers or ankle boots in the office but if I've got something important, I'll always wear heels.

LightSwerve · 23/01/2024 20:09

I think it is fine to wear heels, but they are definitely dated.

I think they look unprofessional and uncomfortable.

But they won't stop you getting the job.

Fluffywhitecloudsinthesky · 23/01/2024 20:13

I would wear the shoes you already have, unless the heels were very high. It is quite funny how everyone who isn't wearing heels is wearing puffy trainers with a 1/2 inch lift on them...or platforms, or heels to formal dos. I don't wear heels per se but my chunky sole shoes have at least 1inches off the ground.

I also was watching the Wegovy documentary on Panorama and the very attractive lady presented had on a pair of tight grey/black skinnies, a tight black top and a good 2 1/2 in ch chunky heel! I didn't like to write in and tell her that according to S and B, she's very out of fashion...(she looked fab of course).

innerdesign · 23/01/2024 20:14

Wear whatever makes you feel confident and comfortable, an outfit that you don't actually have to think about. For me this would be a knee length smart dress and ballet flat/loafers/flat ankle boots (not what I wear normally, but this would be my interview outfit). Two middle aged men will probably not notice you look 'dated', but might notice if you look uncomfortable cos you're worried your white trainers are too casual, for example. I struggle with wide leg trousers if I can't wear trainers with them, and I wouldn't wear trainers to interview, so for that reason I wouldn't wear wide legged trousers to an interview. But tbh I base most of my outfits around my footwear due to weather.

innerdesign · 23/01/2024 20:18

@Fluffywhitecloudsinthesky tight trousers and tight top is super dated - not just according to S&B. One or t'other can be fine.

@burri I don't know your body type, but look up Lydia Tomlinson on YouTube or Instagram. She's just done a video on work wear looks that might help you. I think the secret is if wearing heels, make sure they're kitten heel and pointy

PieAndLattes · 23/01/2024 20:38

If you’ve got heels wear them, provided they’re not too high and they’re mostly covered up with trousers, rather than pay for a new pair, but if you have a nice pair of brogues or loafers they look more professional and less ‘looook at meeeee allllll sexeeeeee’.

AllAroundMyCat · 23/01/2024 20:42

The trouble with heels are that they are often not comfortable to walk in.
Have seen a fair few ladies , in the City, who really can't walk properly in them. Bums and knees all over the place.

Employers might consider a lady's need to look good in heels over comfort to be a silly thing.

Once worked with a teacher who always wore high heels to work and they had those very pointed toes.
She always kicked them off as soon as she entered the classroom and hated playground duty as she'd have to put them on again.
She was a very lazy teacher and didn't last more than two terms.

Allwelcone · 23/01/2024 20:44

I wore heels to an interview once then had to walk 10 minutes in a Huiuuge office building being accompanied by the interviewer. Couldnt keep up. His boss was waiting for us, wewring smwrt casual and flat.
Never again.
