Interview - do heels look dated?

burri · 23/01/2024 19:26

First interview in 15+years. Bit out of the loop. Usual get up is jeans and trainers. This is office job. City centre. Interview will be with two middle age men so they’re not likely to really notice my feet…hopefully…. But will heels look dated or are there occasions like this were they’re pretty much standard? Feel out of touch.
outfit will be wide leg trousers, jacket + top.

I work in fashion - heeled boots were definitely back in this AW, with slip skirts etc. Block and slim mid and kitten heels (not skyscraper).

Regardless, wear what you feel confident in. I would never judge someone during an interview based on what they were wearing as long as they looked smart and tidy.

DNLove · 23/01/2024 23:00

What makes you feel confident? I wouldn't feel confident in a pair of flats for an interview. Id wear long wide leg trousers with a heel. Not a 4 inch sky scraper pair but a 2/3 inch that makes me feel tall and confident. Flats make me feel average, invisible.
You can wear heels with thinking pencil skirt, heels and blouse! Even wedges as an inbetween

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 23/01/2024 23:10

At some point in every single thread about office wear someone will (very authoritatively) post a link to The Fold or The Row as being the absolute pinnacle of acceptable work wear.

Someone better tell the stylists at The Fold they've got it all wrong and why is The Row selling these?

If you're wearing trousers OP the length of the trousers is going to dictate what the best shoe height is.

Really, really "dated" from The Fold

Really" dated" from The Row

When I interview candidates, heels always give a negative impression. Very misogynistic outdated fashion, not what I expect to see any self respecting woman in.

What a horrible attitude. The irony of saying heels are "misogynistic" is awesome.

Bellyblueboy · 23/01/2024 23:19

I interview a lot. Some women wear heels, some don’t. Can’t say I pay much attention!

I wear heals sometimes too.

it’s not a fashion show - you don’t have to be bang on trend. Actually I think it shows more maturity and confidence to wear what you like - I like heels. Don’t give a toss if some random thinks they are so 2018😂.

Fine. If a woman enjoys wearing impractical, misogynistic and physical damaging clothing, she should absolutely feel free to do so. In her own time, not at work.

Please stop interviewing! Report yourself to HR as someone who can’t make Sound and objective decisions.

I hoped we moved away from this nonsense years ago - competency at work can’t be determined by someone’s fashion preferences!

ichundich · 23/01/2024 23:23

Maybe I live at the back of beyond but where I work and go out many women still wear heels. But MN likes to tell us what's 'dated' constantly 🙄. Just wear what makes you feel good / smart.

sweetpeasandtea · 23/01/2024 23:47

What on earth do you wear with a smart work dress/skirt suit other than heeled court shoes?

Clearly I'm very dated BlushConfusedGrin

So you judge the women you are interviewing based on their clothing choices? The irony of you calling a shoe style “misogynistic” is breathtaking.

Plus the instagrammers can hop it, telling us to live in trainers because 'nobody wears heels any more' then losing their minds over those blimmin Eska platform sandals that look to me to have come from the bottom shelf at New Look. Of course people still wear heels, they just don't call them heels.

I don't do Instagram or any kind of social media but I love Esska platform sandals because they're the only heels I find comfortable enough to wear with my plantar fasciitis. I heard of them through a Mumsnetter posting on Style & Beauty.

stealthbanana · 24/01/2024 05:47

I would def wear heels if you’re being interviewed by middle aged men because they will see a silhouette with heels as normal and at interview you are not trying to be edgy or fashionable, you are trying to demonstrate that you fit in. So unless you’re going for a job as a creative director or trend forecaster (in which case by all means wear platform trainers), but otherwise smart and stylish (not fashionable!) is the best.

wearing trainers to an interview for most jobs I think is very risky, many people still see them as unprofessional.

I’d wear either heels or smart loafers depending on your trouser length and height.

and the poster who thinks women should wear heels “in their own time” and not in the office is a fantasist who I can 100% guarantee has never interviewed anyone or run anything in her life. What an embarrassment.

BarbedButterfly · 24/01/2024 06:07

Wear whatever you want. No one at work ever wears heels or did in my previous role, but don't think it would be an issue if anyone wore them

LightSwerve · 24/01/2024 06:09

Good grief, the idea you must wear a skirt and heels if being interviewed by men is just nonsense. Serious people doing serious work don't have to bother with this rubbish.

It isn't about flat shoes being 'edgy', it is that heels look ridiculous in the workplace. Wearing them won't stop a good candidate getting the job, because people overlook clothes. But heels are ridiculous footwear, practically speaking, so wearing them to work does look weird.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 24/01/2024 06:16

How long are your trousers? I assume reasonably long if you were planning on wearing heels - will they drag on the floor if you were flats? I'd pick the heel height to suit the trouser length.
Personally I'd go for boots over heeled court shoes, which are far less common now.

Strangermanger · 23/01/2024 20:04

I work in a very cutting edge industry. The only people that wear heels are the women over 40. It’s very dated.

I am too a woman over 40 but I’ve never worn them and am glad most of the world has caught on to how gross and misogynistic (and uncomfortable) they are! I think in 20 years time they’ll be viewed like we view corsets now.

The most stylish women I know are the over 40’s. Dressing for themselves.

burri · 24/01/2024 08:09

Also…. Do I need to wear a suit / formal jacket? The only one I have I’ve just tried on and looks too small. I don’t have time to replace it. I will probably be wearing an outdoor coat when I arrive.

Bellyblueboy · 24/01/2024 08:20

You don’t have to wear a jacket.

wear an outfit that is clean, smart, and that you feel comfortable and confident in.

I work in a very formal environment and interview a lot of people - sometimes these people will be interviewed on TV etc for work.

men now don’t wear ties - but usually jackets. Not because it’s stylish, but because it’s easy. They don’t have to put much thought into it.

I remember what candidates say not what they wear. If bold colours are your thing, wear them. If heels and a jacket are your suit of armour to that way. If rousers and a structured top\blouse make you feel competent and confident that’s the outfit!

you will be sitting for a while so nothing that makes you uncomfortable

While there has been sneering comments here about style and women over 40 I have never in my whole career heard a comment from a panel about style or fashion! Only a strange few on this thread seem to notice. And I will assume they are not experienced senior interviewers who work in organisations that train their interviewers about the law and diversity and talent management. Talent isn’t flicking though vogue to check your outfit isn’t 6months out of date

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 24/01/2024 08:24

Please stop stressing. Most nterviews are more focus on questions and competence rather than fashion trends.

You need to be groomed, we'll presented, approachable and confident.

Wictc · 24/01/2024 08:27

Yes, heels are dated, but if you’re going to be interviewed by two middle aged men as you say (who probably won’t notice), and you’re not working in fashion, then I think just wear what you feel comfortable in.

piscofrisco · 24/01/2024 08:30

I think you need a loafer op. Smart, current enough, practical

Oblomov23 · 24/01/2024 08:37

All this discussion of what is apparently 'dated', I can't create to. It all sounds fine to me. Anything smart but comfy sounds fine. Now apparently certain trousers are dated? On purlease. I wear heels, kitten, loafers, brogues, smart black trainers, sketchers, all sorts.

Choux · 24/01/2024 08:42

It's an interview with two middle aged men not the mumsnetters who are passionate about style.

OP - wear something that looks like you are taking yourself and this job seriously. So no jeans or trainers. I wouldn't bother with a too small jacket but don't wear a cardigan or jumper as that's a bit too casual in my opinion. But a blouse or shirt smartly pressed with trousers or skirt and reasonably smart shoes whatever the heel. Everything clean and pressed but comfortable to you.

Rosiiee · 24/01/2024 08:44

No need for jacket 😊 good luck!

MorrisZapp · 24/01/2024 08:46

Dated heels by Esska. The entire insta sphere melted down over these and they've spawned dupes. Platforms/flatforms are the open secret of heel wearing, as all of us shorties know.

MorrisZapp · 24/01/2024 08:47

And the pic!
