Interview - do heels look dated?

First interview in 15+years. Bit out of the loop. Usual get up is jeans and trainers. This is office job. City centre. Interview will be with two middle age men so they’re not likely to really notice my feet…hopefully…. But will heels look dated or are there occasions like this were they’re pretty much standard? Feel out of touch.
outfit will be wide leg trousers, jacket + top.

I do wear heels actually just not for interviews!

muckcook · 23/01/2024 21:20

I wear heels most days for work ( office) nothing crazy high and sometimes wear a Low smart shoe with trousers

I don't think I look dated, all my work outfits would look a bit scruffy otherwise. I'm short and my body looks better with height

I think trainers look hideous with work wear, only a few people can pull that off ( very tall and lean models)

I also hate the white trainers with any dress ( casual or smart) they just don't 'go' and are unflattering on most. Can't wait for that trend to die out

I know it shouldn't matter what we wear, but the truth is it does and that's the world we live in

Polkadothandkerchief · 23/01/2024 21:25

I worse a mushroom coloured suede heels Mary Jane and hated having them on but I got the job anyway so if your only option it's not a deal breaker but today I'd get a loafer

If you’ve got heels wear them, provided they’re not too high and they’re mostly covered up with trousers, rather than pay for a new pair, but if you have a nice pair of brogues or loafers they look more professional and less ‘looook at meeeee allllll sexeeeeee’.

This is literally the last thing I want something I'm wearing at work to say.

GeneCity · 23/01/2024 21:29

@PieAndLattes, I'm sorry, I think I read your post wrong!

hobbledyhoy · 23/01/2024 21:32

Think it depends on the heel, something like an ankle boot with a kitten heel if wearing wide leg trousers is a different, fresher look than the traditional pre-Covid office heel.

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 23/01/2024 21:33

Best thing for office commutes are smart, black skater shoes. I wear them with long trousers if in a meeting. I had an interview for my current office/remote role wearing a black floral maxi dress, black tights and biker boots. Comfort is key....oh and after breaking my leg and 2years ago, I wouldn't risk heels unless necessary but I don't think they are dated.

now that sounds incredibly dated. Like this?

Good news, it did - about 18 months ago..!

No need to be a tall lean model to wear trainers with work wear, I think it looks great on most body types. But not in an interview, best to err on the side of overly formal, regardless of current trends.

Jk987 · 23/01/2024 22:07

Heeled ankle boots look great if you're wearing a trouser suit. Not stiletto type heels but block heels. Not everyone wears flats constantly!

muckcook · 23/01/2024 22:07

@Strangermanger

No, I'd never wear jeans to work

If they're relatively practical heels I would go with it - better too smart than too casual for interviews.

idontlikealdi · 23/01/2024 22:18

Heels are very dated in my industry. I feel sorry, rightly or wrongly when I see women teetering around in stilettos on their way to the office.

Goditswindy · 23/01/2024 22:27

Heels are awful, even the word...

TheOGCCL · 23/01/2024 22:33

Heels are extinct where I work unless it's block heeled boots. They are a short cut to not looking current.

DelightfulDoris · 23/01/2024 22:39

I work in Finance. None of the women in my office wear heels.

We all dress comfortably smart! Clean boots, new clean trainers etc.

burri · 23/01/2024 22:41

Thanks for the replies. I’m more confused than ever 😀

When I interview candidates, heels always give a negative impression. Very misogynistic outdated fashion, not what I expect to see any self respecting woman in.

I'm committed to flats for me but I find your attitude ridiculous. Perfectly possible for a woman to be self-respecting and to enjoy wearing heels.

onemorerose · 23/01/2024 22:48

My god I didn’t know heels were so very outdated. I rarely wear them any more but as a short woman they sometimes help my confidence. Hopefully it’s not a derail to ask what kind of heels are still fashionable with pics? Would be much appreciated!

Fine. If a woman enjoys wearing impractical, misogynistic and physical damaging clothing, she should absolutely feel free to do so. In her own time, not at work.

NewKingontheBlock · 23/01/2024 22:50

Heels covers a multitude of types though from high spindly stilettos to chunky block low heels, there are a multitude of choices, shapes and heights so I can’t believe that every heel no matter what height or design is dated.

I hope you tell them this at the interview.

Yep call the Church Elders tout suite.

Cantalever · 23/01/2024 22:56

Boots with a bit of heel might look best with wide trousers?
