Interview - do heels look dated?

First interview in 15+years. Bit out of the loop. Usual get up is jeans and trainers. This is office job. City centre. Interview will be with two middle age men so they’re not likely to really notice my feet…hopefully…. But will heels look dated or are there occasions like this were they’re pretty much standard? Feel out of touch.
outfit will be wide leg trousers, jacket + top.

No wouldn’t do heels. No one wears them anymore and workplaces are much more relaxed.

This is not true of my office, heels and traditional office attire is still going strong, although loafers, flats and boots are also popular.

Oblomov23 · 24/01/2024 13:22

"Heels are less comfortable than flats."

Says who? If they are for you fine, but don't speak for all. I wear slippers mostly, sketchers at work. But I can wear heels. No pain. I don't find them uncomfortable. I don't wear anything uncomfortable. But don't tell me I find them uncomfortable. You don't know that. You can't speak for me.

innerdesign · 24/01/2024 13:25

@Oblomov23 So why are you not wearing heels round the house and at work if they're sooo comfortable? I also won't be taking S&B advice from someone who admits to owning Skechers

ETA - podiatrists advise against heels so... stop trying to pick fights. AIBU is over there --->

Oblomov23 · 24/01/2024 13:35

Thousands of pairs of shoes, flats, trainers, sandals, wellie boots!

Heels come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from Louis Vuitton 12 inch heels with red soles, to tiny kitten heels. One of my most comfy pairs is a black cork Wedge sandals, sole is flat. Some women can't wear heels. Some people have bunions. Just because you don't want to, don't tell others they can't.

Oblomov23 · 24/01/2024 13:39

@innerdesign

Oh dear, you sound right narked! Grin

What's wrong with sketchers? They are ergonomically designed, to support and hold the foot, and are one of the many recommended pieces of footwear for nhs, ie nurses who spend all day stood up.

Strangermanger · 24/01/2024 13:53

I see them like corsets - uncomfortable and hindering women.

WarmWinterSun · 24/01/2024 13:57

A chunky heel is definitely not dated. I'd avoid stilletto styles

DJSteves · 24/01/2024 14:43

I was at an interview last week. I wore shoes similar to these with black trousers. Yes they were silver. I love a statement shoe.

I was at a meeting this morning and had a look at the footwear 😂 - wide mix of styles. Boss had on a striped tshirt with wide leg trousers and kitten heels. Colleague had a satin skirt with knee high boots and a high neck jumper all in a chocolate brown. One in a rather nice Zara pinafore dress with heeled boots. Another had white trainers, wide leg tailored trousers and a print blouse. All 30-40. Traditional courts might not be too current but definitely a mix of flats and heels.

Yes this sounds a pretty normal mix to me. Really not many high stiletto court shoe type styles, but definitely not just flats. I think when people say they never see people in heels, maybe they're not counting low block heels, or boots with a chunky heel etc.

Strangermanger · 24/01/2024 15:01

What on earth do you wear with a smart work dress/skirt suit other than heeled court shoes?

surely that’s what you’d wear if you worked in customer service at a bank or at M&S, not most office jobs @sweetpeasandtea

SideshowAuntSallyx · 24/01/2024 16:39

I'd wear heels I could walk in (probably the same ones I'd wear to a funeral,). I love heels though.

You don’t sound like you should be conducting interviews with an attitude like that.

I agree. I also wouldn't want to work for someone who judged me on my footwear.

Could two middle aged men care one way or the other about dated or on trend
It's an interview with two middle aged men not the mumsnetters who are passionate about style.

I agree.

All this discussion of what is apparently 'dated', I can't create to. It all sounds fine to me.

I can’t relate to this either. I wear flats because I can’t wear heels.

OP - wear something that looks like you are taking yourself and this job seriously. So no jeans or trainers.

This ^^ is the best advice.

I know feck all about high heels 👠 but isn't it Christian Loubotin (sp) with the red soles?

Court shoes has to be the most old fashioned fashion description on the planet

DizzyRascal · 25/01/2024 10:06

Court shoes just describes a style of shoe that has a non wedge heel and is slip on with no strap. And it’s exactly what I would wear with a vintage Vivienne Westwood suit, working in a design/ creative industry.
Chunky black suede with a 3.5 inch heel.
Its the quality and style of the apparel that counts, and the the styling of the whole look, not slavish following of arbitrary fashion rules based on a narrow view of what is acceptable in what line of work. IMHO.

Great post. As I have gotten older I have gained more confidence in my personal style. I buy what I enjoy wearing and don’t get to worked up by passing phases.

I imagine some on this thread decorated their homes all in grey and then frantically repainted and bough replacement furniture when the fashion changed!

to be honest people who slavishly follow fashion trends come across as quite dull and unimaginative. Not qualities you look for on leaders - no one wants a sheep!

Nobody? Nobody at all?

I would still wear heels to an interview as it looks much smarter and professional.
