hardcore moisturising night cream -low cost recommendations?

porridgeisbae · 21/01/2024 21:46

hi troops, I have a skin regime for in the day (spf moisturiser on most of face, tretinoin on forehead/sides of eyes) but now/at the moment my skin seems to feel dry by the evening.

As the tretinoin is already expensive for me, I don't want to spend a massive amount. I've tried vaseline as I had some lying around, or lotion mixed with olive oil etc, but think I might get something as a night cream. What would you recommend?

Another vote for la Roche posay cicaplast

IrisBearded · 22/01/2024 08:02

Weleda Skin Food is great for night time. And there's a lighter version for the day.

I get peeling every time I use tretonin and this is the only one that seems to do the job and prevent peeling

porridgeisbae · 22/01/2024 08:46

I use tret (Retirides) not every night and I don't have any wrinkles in my early 50's

It seemed to work for me for a few months, but now my wrinkles are worse than before. But apparently I was going wrong with when I applied it, so I'll give it another go.

Nivea Soft is my suggest - less perfumey than regular blue pot Nivea

Girlintheframe · 22/01/2024 08:58

Cetreban. Massive tube for about £16, lasts me about 6 months and I do my whole body in it. Extremely moisturizing and non fragranced.

Before you jump into buying something, you need to figure out if your skin is dry (needs oil) or if it’s dehydrated (needs water)

It can be both dry and dehydrated, but mostly you will know - it’s dry if your skin sometimes feels tight or cracked, and soaks up rich creams like Nivea, whereas it’s probably just dehydrated if they sit on the top and just feel a bit greasy.

If your skin is dehydrated, then you need a cream that sells itself as ‘hydrating’ rather than moisturising (I know it’s all a bit Zoolander, just go with it 🤣)

You can try a facial spray or a hyaluronic acid serum to add hydration before you put on your moisturiser.

If your skin is actually dry and in need of moisture i.e. oil, then you can really use any old cream like the ones recommended above. I use the Aldi Lacura night, which is in a dark blue tub with a silver lid - it’s supposed to be a dupe for La Prairie, which is over £150.

Finally, Vaseline, blue Nivea and many of the cheapy creams are made of petrol - their ingredients list petroleum, paraffinum, etc. There are plenty of non-petrochemical base oils available to use as moisturiser, so if you are bothered by putting petrol onto your skin, avoid these!!

@Anxhor no lines at all in early 50s???

I’m 60. I’ve hardly got any wrinkles.

Mrsgreen100 · 22/01/2024 09:26

Coconut oil every time

porridgeisbae · 22/01/2024 09:27

Totally jealous of the non wrinkleys! I know carbs aren't the devil, but I eat a lot of carbs/sugar, so I don't think that helps.

I use coco butter a lot, its smells lovely. I slather it on before I go for a walk and it soaks in a treat. It tints the skin too.

I like Nivea Q10 night cream.

Are you drinking enough water?

Second Nivea Q10. Really don't unserstand the nivea blue tin recommendations... it's so unpleasant to use, sits thick on the skin and imo much less moisturising than 'greasier' creams.

Hi OP,

I'm currently using this and would recommend it:

@Anxhor no lines at all in early 50s???

No none I'm as surprised as you

And I was a really heavy smoker and drinker all through my 20's and early 30's

I have high cheekbones and wore foundation pretty much everyday of my adult life so I think that must have protected my skin

I have been a bit overweight though the last 10 years so it might have something to do with that too. Size 16

I drink tons of water daily

VegetableGyoza · 23/01/2024 06:38

I use tret at night time and Weleda Skin Food and Skin Food Light.

43ontherocksporfavor · 23/01/2024 07:43

@Anxhor I’m 52 and don’t have wrinkles but do have frown lines and crows feet. Lines don’t bother me as much as my face starting to migrate south. Never smoked, haven’t sunbathed since 20s and have always used spf . I do think being overweight plumps up the skin, isn’t the saying “ After 50 choose your face or your bum!” 😂 I’m not over weight I do have some fit friends that run and their bodies look great but face not so young. It’s tough.

Blue nivea will sort you right out. Cheap as chips.

honestly this it's all I use my skin feels lovely.

NewbieSM · 23/01/2024 08:14

Yes Op please only use the tret at night as it will lose efficacy when exposed to sunlight.

I would recommend the Clinique moisture surge overnight mask, it's really lovely and hydrating but doesn't have a greasy texture.

Also try using the 'sandwich method' so wash your face, apply whatever face mist/serum then a layer of moisturiser. Let it sink in, apply your tret (all over your face), and another layer of moisturiser on top. Helps if you have dry skin and the tret can be a bit intense, so the extra moisturiser provides a buffer.

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 23/01/2024 08:19

All the bonkers people slathering vaseline on, do you wash you hair daily? It would get everywhere wouldn't it? All over the pillow and your hair?

SoapCollector · 23/01/2024 08:52

OP my skin is dry too, I used blue Nivea last night and it still feels dry this morning. I'm going to give using an oil underneath Nivea a go tonight as recommended on here.

@Mrsgreen100 Do you use the coconut oil during the day and for skin cleansing as well?

@lola8345 which cocoa butter do you use?

Mrsjayy · 23/01/2024 09:01

I'm not having a go at anyone but isthe new thing oily skin?

Theoldbird · 23/01/2024 09:06

The Aldi Q10 night cream is always recommended on this board for use with tret, it's a dupe of the Nivea q10.

JerkintheMerkin · 23/01/2024 09:22

I'll probably get flamed for this but I use pure lanolin in liquid form. Rub it together to warm/soften it a bit and the press it into my face. It's very comedogenic but I never break out because my skin is that dry so it drinks it up. Put it on before bed and in the morning my skin is luminous.

JerkintheMerkin · 23/01/2024 09:23

Also drink 3ltrs of water a day to hydrate from within.

JerkintheMerkin · 23/01/2024 09:24

I use Astral during the day. It's a glycerine/lanolin mix.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/01/2024 09:25

My skin feels dry after the thick blue Nivea too
