what hair makes you look younger rather than older?

I like to have long hair and think a fringe is good to hide my wrinkles :) But what cut helps one look youthful?

As per my other thread, people think I'm about 60 rather than my late 40s.

My hair is currently quite red-red and I thought it's quite a youthful colour, but maybe not going on people's assumptions. :/ Should I have it lighter/darker (too dark makes me look pale, and I don't like brown)

My hair is maybe usually a bit less flat looking at the sides than this- it's a bit overconditioned today. But I took so many pics I CBA taking another one lol. I took many to look my least-hideous without much makeup while still looking at all representative.

Hope you can help.

I can't manage much styling, it doesn't happen. A bit of elnet is as far as it goes.

Hope you can help.

Pic hopefully to follow

I'm good at this if you post a pic!

porridgeisbae · 16/01/2024 20:49

Ooh, thanks.

This doesn't actually show the decrepidness, I have more bags under my eyes IRL

I didn’t see your earlier post, but it sounds like people were harsh! Some people just come on ‘age’ threads to op-bash! You don’t look 60s ffs. I think your hair colour is nice, maybe the fringe could be modernised a bit (the longer curtain bangs look?) Eye bags are the bane of my life too! A decent concealer is as good as I have found it - surgery is the only real option there - I’ll go with my trusty Huda or Lancôme Idole concealer for now.

roarrfeckingroar · 16/01/2024 21:03

I don't think unnatural colours like that really suit many people. I find I look younger with my natural colour:

coxesorangepippin · 16/01/2024 21:04

I have shoulder length, wavy ish blonde hair. Makes me look feckless Grin even though I'm not

When I have it cut it's very blunt - it makes me look way older

coxesorangepippin · 16/01/2024 21:06

Just seen your pic

Contrary to my point above, I think you'd look younger with it shorter. Perhaps less red. Maybe more of a mahogany color would flatter?

You do not look 60!!!

It's in real life rather than on here so far. I'll have to be brave and post an uncurated pic :)

@Purplecatshopaholic what is the eye bag surgery? well, mine are maybe more like hardcore dark shadows. I know some people have tear troughs filled, but I've heard that doesn't make much of a difference.

It needs to be lifted more at the top I think. Cut a bit off, a more natural colour and practice blow drying with some lift at the roots

Umcanijustsay · 16/01/2024 21:07

I think less blunt fringe and a more natural, neutral hair colour. It looks like you have lovely clear skin so I think some nice strategically placed blush would bring a bit of warmth into your face. What colour are your eyes?

MichaelAndEagle · 16/01/2024 21:09

I have recently committed to keeping mine just above shoulder length, with a wave, all one length. Long just pulls my face down now.
I cannot pull off a fringe of any kind! I think yours is maybe a bit too blunt?
I'd go for a slightly more natural version of the colour you have.
I'll see if I can find an inspo pic.

messymummy5 · 16/01/2024 21:09

You don't look 60 at all, don't listen to them, you look about your age. Some people are just nasty

Maybe something like these?

But agree with others you do not look old!

porridgeisbae · 16/01/2024 21:14

shoulder length, wavy ish blonde hair. Makes me look feckless

I used to have it dark blonde but I put a temporary colour on it that wouldn't come out, so I gave up. Maybe I'll get a blonde wig :) Too light a blonde can make me look washed out.

I find I look younger with my natural colour:

I went prematurely grey so my current natural colour is virtually pure white. It used to be very dark brown and I think brown is plain.

I think you'd look younger with it shorter

I think shorter is less feminine and unenticing to men. Smile Longer is usually more conventionally attractive IMHO. Like, no bloke would go 'ooh, look at her lovely hair' about short hair. Not that they do about my hair style lol.

I like the idea of mahogany but I don't like it too dark. Will experiment :)

OP for a start you don’t look anything like 60! I would find a properly good hairdresser, ask them to create some volume without losing too much length. Some long layers would help. Fringes are in! But I would consider a more natural colour, again a good hairdresser should advise you. You could stick with red but a more natural redhead/auburn colour? Maybe some subtle highlights.

ShirleyPhallus · 16/01/2024 21:15

Red is really hard as it looks great when first on but rapidly fades to blah. Same as lots of bright colours too.

tbh, your hair looks very fine and the fridge looks heavy and like it’s dragging your hair down. A long choppy bob like someone posted upthread would be nice, and dye it brown with some caramel highlights

you do not look 60!!

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/01/2024 21:16

If it’s dark circles op, then concealer is probably the way to go? I havent tried tear trough filler myself, but there will be people on here who have who will likely have a view.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/01/2024 21:17

I will leave the hair advice to the experts, but I need to say you do not look 60 in any way shape or form. Whoever said that needs an eye test.

Mitherations · 16/01/2024 21:17

You don't look anywhere near any 60 year old I know. I'd say lop a few inches off the length as it could be dragging your face down, and soften your fringe to something a bit more Bardot and less blunt, and maybe tone down the red a little bit as it could be washing you out, but ultimately, sod it, if you like it keep it like it is, it's you that's got to look in the mirror and feel good.

porridgeisbae · 16/01/2024 21:21

Great ideas, thanks troops. There are so many things one can spend money on beauty wise that I never want to spend money on a colour and cut when one can technically do that oneself (but not very well. :) )

I think less blunt fringe and a more natural, neutral hair colour. It looks like you have lovely clear skin so I think some nice strategically placed blush would bring a bit of warmth into your face. What colour are your eyes?

@Umcanijustsay I wanted to not put more makeup on so you all could see what you were working with :) My eyes are hazel. Sometimes I wear a bit of blush (where would you place the blush?) and a sparkly gold eyeshadow to bring out some gold tones in my eyes.

OP posts:
Josette77 · 16/01/2024 21:22

The fringe is making your face look longer and it's too blunt. The colour is also too harsh.

I would start growing them out and do softer curtain bangs. Not sure how long it is but it needs layers blended in to give you the illusion of more width at the sides.

Colour wise lighter highlights. If you want red still go light copper.

Makeup, neutral lipstick, blush on the apples going out and up to lift your face. You have nice big eyes, fill in the brows, add a bit of blush to the eyelids, and no eyeliner.

Those are my recommendations!

peoplearepeople · 16/01/2024 21:23

I actually think your hair colour is lovely op and really suits you. 😊If I were you I think I would actually ditch the fringe and at least grow it out to being side swept. I think as we get older the really blunt lines like that can be aging and I think soft and looking like it has a bit of movement can be a better look. Maybe add in a few waves to soften it as well so it's not quite so harsh?
The cuts someone posted above would look great on you and really lift your face.
You look nowhere near 60 by the way!

porridgeisbae · 16/01/2024 21:24

if you like it keep it like it is, it's you that's got to look in the mirror and feel good.

I don't feel too badly about myself, but it's depressing when people ask if I'm of pensionable age etc, or yell in the street that I'm ugly :)

I put my blush along the bone, going from the temple and fading out as it reaches the apple of my cheekbone. I think you would suit similar as you seem to have nice bone structure. Gold eyeshadow is lovely with blue eyes. I take it your hair is dyed?

HardcoreLadyType · 16/01/2024 21:24

It’s a bit of an old fashioned style, and maybe that’s why people think you are older than you are.

You have amazing cheekbones, and I think a softer style would suit you better. Not such a blunt fringe.

Also, your hair is all the one colour, which looks a bit static. If you love the red colour, maybe go for red balayage or highlights?
