what hair makes you look younger rather than older?

I like to have long hair and think a fringe is good to hide my wrinkles :) But what cut helps one look youthful?

As per my other thread, people think I'm about 60 rather than my late 40s.

My hair is currently quite red-red and I thought it's quite a youthful colour, but maybe not going on people's assumptions. :/ Should I have it lighter/darker (too dark makes me look pale, and I don't like brown)

My hair is maybe usually a bit less flat looking at the sides than this- it's a bit overconditioned today. But I took so many pics I CBA taking another one lol. I took many to look my least-hideous without much makeup while still looking at all representative.

Hope you can help.

I can't manage much styling, it doesn't happen. A bit of elnet is as far as it goes.

Hope you can help.

Pic hopefully to follow

I meant more shoulder length, and this colour perhaps

I know what you mean about short hair op.

They do you know!

I'm 52 soon and I had a full fringe cut and for a wolf cut - knocked years off me . I also went from a solid dark brown to a much lighter blonde with more tone and variation .
It hides the greys .
Shorter styles don't suit me because I have quite a round face though I do have decent cheekbones.

Wolf cuts and fringes are very in at the moment!

StolenCookie · 16/01/2024 22:50

Agree with the others, you need everything to be much softer. Softer shape with layers, softer colour (a natural reddish brown). I’d go to as expensive and trendy a salon as you can afford and get their advice on how to freshen it up. I do think it is definitely the cut and colour that is ageing you and not your features!

PrincessPotato · 16/01/2024 22:50

Hmm OP I have a similar face shape (narrow, lower 2/3rds of my face are long) and imo fringes aren’t the best thing - they just make the forehead look really short and the rest of the face even longer. I think that’s partly what’s aging you (though I def would say 40s not 50s/60s!)

I’d go for curtain bangs, grow it out then soft layers from the cheekbones down - definitely some just under the chin so you can flick it under and visually push your face up a bit…though I think anything as obviously ‘styled’ as a wolf cut can look a little stiff, unnatural and again can age a person as a result.

I love the colour, def stay in the realm of reds. Agree with the soft auburn and lighter lipstick ideas though.

ShyTed · 16/01/2024 22:50

If it was me I would soften the colour into a more natural shade with some baby lights or balayage, cut about 4 inches off and grow out the fringe into curtain bangs.
I think it would be much more flattering and softer and lift your face and undertones. I think your current hair drags you down and ages you a little.

GetWhatYouWant · 16/01/2024 22:50

It would really be worth going to a salon, use one recommended by friends whose hair you like, and explaining your issues to see what they'd recommend.
It's rubbish that all men prefer women to have long hair, do you think that in the fifties and eighties, when most women had short hair, that men didn't find them attractive?! Marilyn Munroe and Princess Diana, 2 women considered to be very beautiful, had short hair. Most men like the whole package, not just long hair.
Anyway, as you age, long hair on an older face, can actually be aging in itself.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 16/01/2024 22:59

Please don’t take this as a bad thing because i think you look lovely, but your hair colour/cut reminded me of Marsha from Spaced (the dark-red pic attached).

The actress was beautiful and 47 at that point (but is purposefully pulling a face for that character).

The other pic is her 20 years later with a much more flattering softer cut and colour. I know nothing about hair, but maybe something similar?

You have such an enviably long, slim face, I think you'd look great with a pixie cut or pixie bob. They suit very few people - you really do have to have a slim face - but you do!

It was hard to capture the colour but it's nowhere near as dark as that and not like it all, so I'm not remotely offended because it's completely inaccurate. :) I agree that I like her colour and cut in the blonde pic.

I have a natural tendency to look like Frenchie out of Grease if I'm not careful, though.

I would go brunette with some natural highlights, and I think the softer fringe advice is good, however - me personally, I think you'd look lovely growing out your fringe and having a side parting so it sweeps over a bit. X

GettingStuffed · 16/01/2024 23:24

I'm a young looking very soon to be 60 year old and you look way younger than me. I think the colour is wrong for you probably a reddish light brown and Id get rid of the fringe, although that might just be my personal hatred of them.

Citygirlypop · 16/01/2024 23:25

Hopping on to say what a nice Marsha cut rubyat
a good dye job looks amazing, but if like me, you can’t quite stretch to 100 odd quid, I’ve found a box dye left on half the time and then hold up little bits / clumps/ strands? And squirt sun in ( or whatever it’s called now) as you blast with the dryer. You avoid the solid too strong for your skin tone box dye look.
oh and always put some lighter bits at the front of your hair. 🙂hope this helps!

porridgeisbae · 16/01/2024 23:27

I used to hate them. Until about 45 I always had a centre part. I just got the fringe as part of an attempt at face shortening after people kept wrongly assuming I was trans.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 16/01/2024 23:35

Have you thought about getting a colour analysis? Your hair colour is a bit draining and a colour that suits you better could take years off you. Reds are difficult to carry off.

I had mine via style me happy and it really helps with hair, make up and clothes.

I don't think you look 60 though!!!

Josette77 · 17/01/2024 00:52

A center part will lengthen the face as well, but less so. I think a side part with chin length layers would look great!

workshy46 · 17/01/2024 01:10

You don't look anything like 60. When people posts pics here the replies are always about 20 years older than what the Op is or what I think. Like who are all these super youthful people with zero wrinkles and firm skin in their 50's as I don't know any and i know v rich people who get lots of treatments and have super expensive skin care regimes. I think you look your age, longer fringe, shorter cut and a more natural broken up color i think will look great on you.

porridgeisbae · 17/01/2024 01:59

I have some ideas :) Thanks troops. Will be back when they can fit me in :)

OP posts:
ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 17/01/2024 02:15

I think shorter is less feminine and unenticing to men. Longer is usually more conventionally attractive IMHO. Like, no bloke would go 'ooh, look at her lovely hair' about short hair. Not that they do about my hair style lol.

I was reading this with interest - until you posted the above, which is actually a load of rubbish!! I've had short hair most of my life, and have never had a problem finding men - none of whom have ever commented on my hair.

I agree with pps, your hair is dragging down your face, and the fringe needs attention.

gurnerandpooch · 17/01/2024 02:28

I went from this - to this . Knocked years off

gurnerandpooch · 17/01/2024 02:29

Hope that helps op ! Do t have to have length cut - just change colour and soften the style

porridgeisbae · 17/01/2024 02:50

That's virtually exactly the cut and colour I'd decided on @gurnerandpooch Shock I hope I won't look too much like everyone else because everyone else is doing it. Grin

OP posts:
porridgeisbae · 17/01/2024 02:52

I'm not having any / many layers as I'm not a fan of how they leave the bottom of the hair inevitably thinner. But other than that, virtually the same :)

OP posts:
gurnerandpooch · 17/01/2024 02:57

It's just a very refreshing update op - a variation on the wolf cut and a refreshing change colour wise . It doesn't matter what anyone else is doing ! Do what suits you ! x

disappearingfish · 17/01/2024 06:54

I think that a good haircut is just that, I don't think it can "take years off". But your face is lovely and perfectly fine!
