what hair makes you look younger rather than older?

I like to have long hair and think a fringe is good to hide my wrinkles :) But what cut helps one look youthful?

As per my other thread, people think I'm about 60 rather than my late 40s.

My hair is currently quite red-red and I thought it's quite a youthful colour, but maybe not going on people's assumptions. :/ Should I have it lighter/darker (too dark makes me look pale, and I don't like brown)

My hair is maybe usually a bit less flat looking at the sides than this- it's a bit overconditioned today. But I took so many pics I CBA taking another one lol. I took many to look my least-hideous without much makeup while still looking at all representative.

Hope you can help.

I can't manage much styling, it doesn't happen. A bit of elnet is as far as it goes.

Hope you can help.

Pic hopefully to follow

I think a more natural colour with less of a ‘one colour out of a box’ look and a better cut would help you look younger, not necessarily shorter just more of a style.

porridgeisbae · 16/01/2024 21:28

The fringe is making your face look longer

I don't see how a fringe can make a face look longer- the whole point is they reduce the length of the face. IDK if curtain bangs would hide my wrinkly forehead as much. :)

no eyeliner.

I have very dark lashes so sometimes it looks like I'm wearing mascara or liner when I'm not. I think it's usually a bonus really :)

I agree you don't look 60!

I think with your hair, anything you can do to give it some volume and movement would be more 'youthful'. Soften up the lines, some waves, a multidimensional colour.

Comedycook · 16/01/2024 21:29

I think the contrast between the fringe and the long sides is a bit too harsh ...I add in some layers to the sides. I'd also go for a more natural colour....a caramelly light brunette maybe.

Londontown12 · 16/01/2024 21:30

Hairdresser here !
if u was my client I would probably transition you to a medium Auburn copper !
I would soften up the fringe currently it’s to weighty and choppy at the same time !
And just add some long layers to add movement and volumne !
I wouldn’t cut the length to short it’s mainly your fringe that needs adjusting and u deffo don’t look 60 !! X

MichaelAndEagle · 16/01/2024 21:31

Your point about there being so many things beauty wise you can spend money on, I would say a good haircut that suits you would be #1 on my list. I think it makes the biggest difference of all.

WhereAreWeNow · 16/01/2024 21:31

You don't look 60 OP! That's nonsense. I agree with others who suggested curtain bangs rather than a blunt fringe. I think the length/colour are nice but you could definitely style it differently if you fancy a change.

PastorCarrBonarra · 16/01/2024 21:31

I’m not much good on style advice and I only like red hair when it’s natural (personal preference) but “60”? No. You look substantially younger than 60.

I wonder about people’s motivations sometimes. Who says stuff like this to folk?!?

MichaelAndEagle · 16/01/2024 21:34

If you are cool what about a wolf cut? I love this. Not for everyone though.

what hair makes you look younger rather than older?
Missingmyusername · 16/01/2024 21:36

Tone the red down, dye it auburn, get shot of fringe, have it cut /trimmed at least an inch off and a bouncy blow dry/loose curls to add volume.

Missingmyusername · 16/01/2024 21:37

PS No you don’t look 60! Maybe some softer make up too.

MillicentRogers · 16/01/2024 21:44

Anything Lulu or Cilla Black is aging.

Another good example of what not to look like is Mark Wrights mother.

BungleandGeorge · 16/01/2024 21:44

I think shorter is less feminine and unenticing to men. Longer is usually more conventionally attractive IMHO. Like, no bloke would go 'ooh, look at her lovely hair' about short hair.

lol really??
fwiw I think the colour is ageing you it’s far too harsh and fake for your skin tone which is a mistake that many people make as they age. I’d skip the ‘fun’ colours only a
few people over 25 can pull them off
A lighter brown with highlights would look nice if you can get it done at a good salon
long hair can be more ageing, maybe try making the fringe and side sections more choppy so it’s less harsh.
You don’t look 60 but I would have said older than you are and it’s mainly due to the colour

Citrusandginger · 16/01/2024 21:46

Get a hairdresser to your fringe! It needs to be thinned out but also made level. I would also recommend losing length and having layers / thinning out which conversely will give you more volume and height.

But the comment I'm going to pick up is about men liking long hair. As politely as possible, who gives a flying fuck what men think?

What suits you? What makes you feel amazing? Remember true onfidence comes from within.

Mummyofbananas · 16/01/2024 21:46

I think you suit red but maybe a more natural brownish red. I think slightly shorter more layered at the front with a softer fringe like the ones someone has posted above.
For blusher I wear mine high up on my cheek bone and start quite far back towards the edge of my eye. I used to wear it on the apples of my cheeks but as ive got older and slimmer in the face it looks better more lifted.
I think a more warm pinkish lip colour would work too. Youve got nice warm colouring and i'd work with that.

DrCoconut · 16/01/2024 21:47

I'm probably about the same age and I've just gone back to red as my natural colour just looks meh and washed out. I went from long to short with an undercut at one side and a light sort of sideswept fringe. Long hair was doing nothing for me at all. It's only an opinion but I'd try a really dramatic change and see if you like it. It will grow back/out/can be covered if not.

MillicentRogers · 16/01/2024 21:47

From your photo your face is lovely. The hair is a bit harsh. The red is unnatural and looks dry.

The fringe is flat.

I basically have the same but mine is bouncy. Think Penelope Tree. Lots of volume in the fringe and shiny.

You don't need to spend money on fancy shampoos and products.

A good hair brush and learning to blow dry to give some oomph to your hair is all you need.

BrightLightTonight · 16/01/2024 21:47

The hairstyle is “ageing” rather than you. I would go to a good hairdresser to discuss options - probably change colour and chop a length off.

TheOGCCL · 16/01/2024 21:47

People have been shouting you're ugly at you?? 😢. You don't look 60.

I guess with that shade of red it's obviously fake and so it may come across that it's there to hide grey hair, whereas more gentle colours and highlights/lowlights, particularly in your forties and fifties, blur the lines more.

I think it's easier for younger people to have basic haircuts. When you get over 40, I think more shape works better. Doesn't have to be short but layers/volume (and that is why some people do go shorter as the hair thins and is harder to maintain volume).

MillicentRogers · 16/01/2024 21:48

This would be a after look on you -

Mayjune11 · 16/01/2024 21:49

I personally think straight across fringes are very ageing as only older woman tend to have them (of course there are exceptions) side swept fringe is more flattering. Long straight hair tend to drag a face down (not you just in general) so I would still keep long maybe just below shoulders with some long layers. You definitely don’t look 60 btw!

toomanyleggings · 16/01/2024 21:51

You need a more natural colour with a few more tones in it. Fringes are good but you have to have them more tapered at the sides. You can still have full in the middle and longer bits at the sides. You also have to blow dry fringes so they’re not sticking to your forehead. I use a round brush and a big roller.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 16/01/2024 21:52

You're wearing a young haircut and colour, so the juxtaposition between it and your face serves only to highlight the age difference between them.

You look your actual age, definitely nowhere near 60, but your hair isn't flattering at the moment. Chocolate brown with a bit more movement might be nicer.

LumiB · 16/01/2024 21:52

If you ignore the hair you don't look 60, the hair unfortunately does age you especially that fringe.

I do think a little bit off your length Nd a different fringe or softer one will help and id try an auburn colour too.

I have a bon bow so I am short hair but I always get complimented for it and I say if a guy us so hung up on length of hair they aren't for me anyway.

Since covid i barely wear makeup think just concealer and some mascara and 100% if my hair looks crap I feel crap and hate looking at myself in the mirror. So I spend £170 on my hair to dye it and cut but it is worth every penny. Because everytike i go get is cut i always walk away feeling amazing

porridgeisbae · 16/01/2024 21:56

As politely as possible, who gives a flying fuck what men think?

I'm single lol. And it's a struggle but in theory I'd aspire to look as conventionally attractive as possible. That's why I used to like blonde.
