Cream lace mini dress, at a wedding…

SummaLuvin · 07/01/2024 14:27

I went to a gay (men) wedding recently and noticed a woman there wearing this dress. She looked really fabulous in it. But is it acceptable to wear this to a wedding? Even one with no bride?

I mean, it’s hideous, but the lace/whiteness of it doesn’t really matter.

I wore a white lace mini dress at my wedding in 1968. We were much more open minded back then... 😂

Yes, at your own wedding!

We're talking about guests.

falafelover · 07/01/2024 18:09

I don't think the couple being two men makes it better – she was still dressed in cream lace at someone else's wedding. Almost like she thought the event needed a bride!

I think it's completely obnoxious to wear white/cream as a wedding guest (unless you've been asked to as part of the bride's colour scheme).

Doggymummar · 07/01/2024 18:15

If you click through to the dress on an actual person it's not short really. About 3 inches above the knee. I wore shorter to secondary school, as do lots of young girls.

BebbanburgIsMine · 07/01/2024 14:56

I think it's fine, it's a very beautiful dress.

I saw someone wearing a very much shorter dress at a friend's funeral, barely covered her behind. I did think that was a bit disrespectful.

I’ve seen this at funerals. People often seem to think it’s necessary to wear black at funerals, and if the only thing they have that is black is a mini skirt they might otherwise wear clubbing, they wear that.

Weirdly, recently at a funeral, there was a man wearing quite a loud checked suit. It was bizarre. He obviously thought it necessary to wear a suit, and that was all he had.

Usually, people wear something sober, in a dark colour. Occasionally, there is a request to wear something within a particular colour scheme. Once, we were asked to wear colour, because that is what the dead person wanted.

Re the short white dress, I wouldn’t wear it to a wedding where there was a bride (or 2) even though it’s not very bride-like. Anything white would be inappropriate (as in, it might upset the bride/s, so I just wouldn’t do it). At a wedding between 2 men, I would think it was fine.

It was your wedding!

Littlebitpsycho · 07/01/2024 18:31

One of my (now ex) husbands friends partners wore one of THE shortest dresses I've ever seen to my wedding.

Can't think of any reason she would have done that other than WANTING to try and upstage me (wouldn't have been difficult, I was 6 months pregnant so it was a rather rushed wedding!)

The dress in the link is very pretty but I wouldn't say wedding suitable - though my body could never, so maybe that's why 😅

Singinghollybob · 07/01/2024 18:38

We had a small wedding with 30 guests and one of my friends wore a white lace mini dress. Tbh it didn't bother me, and I didn't see her as trying to upstage me or seeking attention. I did think I should have been annoyed, because of 'etiquette' and I imagine some brides would be, but personally I wasn't.

NonPlayerCharacter · 07/01/2024 19:01

Even if the bride doesn't personally care, though, unless there's been some sort of advance agreement then it's so clearly against etiquette that I'd always see it as an insult.

thing47 · 07/01/2024 19:21

I think if you know for certain that neither of the couple getting married is going to be wearing a white dress, it would be fine. So in the specific circumstances the OP describes. Otherwise, not.

But as for 'too short' 😂😂, have you been to a wedding with lots of twentysomethings recently? That dress would count as positively demure.

Cosywintertime · 07/01/2024 19:24

This thread is bonkers, I can’t believe the frothing and pearl clutching over a woman wearing a short lacy cream dress to a male gay wedding, 😂😂😂

You think she was insulting the grooms? That’s the most extreme posted 😂

That orange rig-out is dreadful.

No, which is why I said "even if the bride..." I thought that made it clear I was talking about weddings where there is one.

I swear, this place sometimes...

QueenBitch666 · 07/01/2024 21:57

It looks like a toddlers party frock Grin

In the real world, wearing a cream lacy dress to a wedding is a no go and the vast majority of people are aware of this. If someone does wear a dress like that, other guests will notice and pass comment.

In the real world, which I live in, no one gives a shit.
Only in MN world does anyone come up with all sorts of bonkers 'etiquette' rules that have nothing other than pearl clutching attached to them.

I wore neither white nor cream for my wedding. No one knew in advance. People could have turned up in any colour and risked matching me. Number of fucks given, precisely zero.

lunepremiere79 · 07/01/2024 22:33

This thread is making me paranoid..I just got this dress for a wedding where I am a guest. Is this not acceptable?

Reminds me of Alexis accidentally wearing a wedding dress to David’s wedding in Schitt’s Creek.

‘It is NOT a wedding dress! It’s a white floor-length gown.’

Just because you don't care doesn't mean it's not a thing!

The "don't wear white to a wedding" etiquette has been around a hell of a lot longer than MN has 😅

You'll catch your death

BebbanburgIsMine · 07/01/2024 23:08

@HardcoreLadyType

I get what you're saying about the black, but the dress this woman was wearing was quite a bright purple.

I'm not a lover of black, so apart from a dress bought for my dad's funeral I don't own any black clothing, I have a dark teal dress that I wear for funerals.

I'll be requesting no black clothing at my own funeral!

1982mommaof4 · 07/01/2024 23:11

I think it's gorgeous!

HardcoreLadyType · 07/01/2024 23:19

JaneJeffer · 07/01/2024 19:30

I’m 55 and often wear above the knee dresses.

I do find, as well, that dresses are longer on me than on the online models with their baby giraffe legs!

WolfFoxHare · 07/01/2024 16:00

It’s not just that it’s cream, lacy and too short to be appropriate for a wedding, it also looks like something a toddler would wear. I think adult women in twee little dresses like that look ridiculous.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I used to be a size 8 really skinny legs. Even I wouldn't have worn that. My friends would have laughed at me.🤣🤣🤣
