Burns night supper - need something tartan…….

Cherry321 · 06/01/2024 10:42

I’m attending a Burns night supper in a few weeks and the dress code is ‘something tartan’. It’s work so I need to be fairly restrained and I was planning on wearing a black velvet dress and add something but I’m not sure what, maybe some sort of sash? Then there’s the minefield of which tartan to choose. Is it OK to just pick one I like? I’m Welsh so don’t have any links to particular tartans. I might be over thinking this, but would appreciate any suggestions/ advice. Thanks

Sorry….that was a link to a tartan scarf on Amazon. The link didn’t work.

Yes it is fine to pick one you like. There's all sorts of modern tartans now too that represent different charities etc so plenty of choice. You could drape a scarf across the dress or add a tartan hair accessory.
Or you could go the whole hog and get a pretty tartan dress like this https://britishretro.co.uk/product/new-way-west-black-watch-tartan-50s-style-swing-dress/?gadsource=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAkeSsBhDUARIsAK3tief9g6psJ5IjyklzYr0RYLZHJcCvlx5SyWnhY05trSiv-RkP6kuECd8aAknCEALww_wcB

Wear this.

While Europe's eye is fix'd on mighty things,
The fate of Empires and the fall of Kings;
While quacks of State must each produce his plan,
And even children lisp the Rights of Man;
Amid this mighty fuss just let me mention,
The Rights of Woman merit some attention.

Oh @HardcoreLadyType I love that!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/01/2024 11:07

There was a thread on this yesterday actually. I posted that the last one I went to I got a florist to make up a corsage thing (like a gents’ buttonhole for a wedding) and wore that on a black dress. I’m in Scotland so this is maybe a more common florist thing here. It was a bit like the attached image but fresh flowers and much more muted/tasteful!

Any tartan would be ok, how about shoe clips?

Cherry321 · 06/01/2024 11:34

Thanks for the ideas all. Love the scarf @HardcoreLadyType do you have a link please? If that’s a bit more than I planned on spending then I will explore the corsage and hair band ideas.

Etsy is your friend here.

Hair clasp?

Saggypants · 06/01/2024 12:40

My vote is a handbag. I have a gorgeous tartan clutch from Lochcarron mills. (They do beautiful scarves and stoles too.)

It was pricey but a quick search showed loads of other online shops selling them.

RoseAndRose · 06/01/2024 13:16

Amazon has scarves/sashes starting at about £10

And a reel of Royal Stewart ribbon for £7.99 which you could use in all sorts of ways

Royal Stewart is a safe one to wear if you're not Scottish, very red and festive looking. Also safe is Black Watch, which is more muted dark blue/green

FloofCloud · 06/01/2024 13:58

Try here - they've got a sale on too

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/01/2024 16:24

I was in TK Maxx yesterday and they had big tartan headbands in boxes. Might be an easy and cheap way to dress up a velvet dress.

Grazie234 · 18/01/2024 12:24

Did you choose anything yet? I'm having the same conundrum and also Welsh, there are welsh tartans, if you have a common-ish welsh surname you might find something. My maiden name is a welsh surname so I've ordered some ribbon in that design, might just wear in my hair somehow.

Cherry321 · 18/01/2024 15:43

I bought a little tartan corsage / brooch thing from Etsy.

it’s a bit smaller than I expected but it will be fine.

Have a lovely time.

Tartan is just a made up nonsense tbh - one of these manufactured 'traditions' beloved by nationalistic Scots, as far as I can tell.

Can you guess I'm a non nationalistic Scottish person? Grin
