Obsessed as I am obsessed with this top.
Cute to describe nearly everything.

‘Frock’ - I only ever see this word used by fashionista types. Why?

I thought that was a generational thing- my mum says frock (she is 80), so I also thought it might be a very middle class thing based on the fact the other side of my family never say it.

MerryChristmasToYou · 04/01/2024 19:10

I wear specs. Not 'I'm mad me' ones. Although I do look even more like a mad witch with them on.

Ah yes - sorry.
Didn't mean to quote you instead of LoobyDop.
Hope you don't feel maligned, IHNLtC, and, LoobyDop, sorry for misattributing your interesting comment.

Don’t worry about it 😀

I think @OnlyCorrect nailed it more accurately than me. It’s from the same school as “kitchen suppers” 🤮

Or - also as mentioned in La Cooper's books disparagingly - "kitchen sups"...

YY to statement jewellery. At my age I should embrace the grey, get a funky haircut, wear a slash of red lipstick, team with statement jewellery, and wear edgy pieces apparently.

For an evening do I should wear killer heels, a well cut black blazer and black skinnies, and a silk cami. Simple gold jewellery will pull it all together.

A silk cami, bloody yes 🙄 an item of clothing that only a very small section of the population can wear due to boobs existing and being right there, on your chest.

@OnlyCorrect pin money!! Perfect 😂

'Frock' is just twee too-cool-for-school affectation. See also 'trews', 'kicks', 'specs'. Fashion writers who feel the need to signal how not-serious they are about, er, fashion, because that would be so infra dig, darling. It's just a bit of fun for pin money, not one of the biggest industries in the world or anything.

"Trews" are tartan trousers worn with a tailored formal jacket as an alternative to black tie. It's not an "affectation"

Kilts as an alternative to black tie seem to be out of favour now. The last couple of formal dos I've been at were 50/50 traditional black tie and trews and formal jackets.

OnlyCorrect · 04/01/2024 21:21

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle I thought it would be obvious given the thread title, but I'm referring to the use of these words in the context of fashionspeak. When speaking of actual trews, that would be the correct term to use. Just as 'frock' would be an unsurprising word choice for someone over 50. I would even go further than most on this thread and allow the meaningless filler compliment of 'cute,' for Americans. :P

TeachesOfPeaches · 04/01/2024 21:24

'Shop the edit'. Had to Google it when I first read it as had no idea what it meant

fiorentina · 04/01/2024 21:43

‘Elevating’ your look.

Mairzydotes · 04/01/2024 22:00

Elevate your basics

Gowlett · 05/01/2024 02:05

Read recently that tucking in your over-sized jacket to your jeans is the next big trend. Literally the only person in the entire world who might get away with it is Kendall Jenner. Seriously!

Islandermummy · 05/01/2024 02:57

Don't see it much these days (thank god), but I really dislike "haul". As in, "ZARA HAUL"! Followed by a video of a load of stuff they ordered.

Similarly "unbox".

Oh Lord, and "pre-loved". Just say second-hand or vintage.

echt · 05/01/2024 07:25

Frock used to have summery/flouncy/frilly connotations, while dress has a more formal range, e.g. evening, wedding, tea. This is how it still exists in my very late 60s mind.

I actually love the word Frock. I’ve just used it on a thread actually. But I am using it in a kind of tongue in cheek way. Myself, I wear dresses, but there’s a certain look/style that calls for the word “frock” eg Princess of Wales and other royals wear “frocks”. My Mum is in her seventies and used to make all our clothes and she always used the word frock too. It’s almost an affectionate term for me.

Houseplanter · 05/01/2024 09:07

Pieces.

So pretentious

It’s ridiculous enough to tuck a chunky jumper in. They must stand around their wavy framed mirrors thinking “what looks so stupid nobody has ever done it?”

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 05/01/2024 13:52

I hate chunky jumpers tucked into jeans, it’s just ugly.

LaMarschallin · 05/01/2024 14:24

Remember the fashion for having long hair tucked in to the back of a polo neck jersey?
Fashion takes ages to reach the little town where I live (and some fade and die on the way) so people would think you were just too lazy to flip your hair out once you'd put the jersey on, or would helpfully point it out to you.
I remember talking to my hairdresser (a good 25 years younger than I am) about French tucks. I presume she was a MNetter as you could see the words "early dementia" going through her mind.
She was still looking a bit "Do they, ay?" as I was leaving.
I didn't try the FT myself as I rely on the overhang of a jersey to disguise my tummy; certainly don't want to hoik up my clothes to highlight it.

SirChenjins · 05/01/2024 15:05

I’m with you there - the French tuck emphasises my stomach which is best hidden. I always think the wearer looks like they’ve not tucked themselves back in properly after going to the loo - or that a bit of the jumper got caught in their waist band.

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/01/2024 15:10

@SirChenjins , my thought too.

LaMarschallin · 05/01/2024 16:16

SirChenjins

Quite.
It's a bit too much "I didn't want you to miss seeing my bulgey bits, so I've helpfully highlighted them for you".
Hadn't thought about looking like you'd been a bit hasty leaving the loo, but you're right!

fairymary87 · 05/01/2024 16:25

I am obsessed. No you're not!

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 05/01/2024 17:22

The "French Tuck" reminds me of when tying a knot ** at the side of a big t- shirt first became a thing (early 80s? )

The first dozen or so people doing it looked cool; especially if they could carry off a "just borrowed the first thing to hand belonging to the bloke I've been shagging all night at his place and needed something clean to wear , didn't put any effort into it" vibe.*

After that it was just copy catting and no one looked cool. It was even worse when you could buy pre-tied t-shirts or t- shirts with added ties for those who couldn't even copy cat.

The first dozen or so French Tuckers - cool- everyone else, copy catting.

*is "vibe" on the eugh list?
** edited - tying a knot , not a note

SirChenjins · 05/01/2024 17:29

YY to the knotted t-shirts! I remember them well. I remember there was a fashion (certainly where we were) where you would take the middle of your t-shirt hem, lift it up to boob level and tuck it over and down between them to create a sort of cropped top (I'm not explaining it very well). That was in the days long, long ago in the midst of time when I had a flat stomach and boobs that pointed upwards.

DiamandaTheGreat · 05/01/2024 17:30

fairymary87 · 05/01/2024 16:25

And it's even worse when said with full stops..." I.Am.OBSESSED."

Teeth-gnashingly irritating!!
