Fashion speak that annoys you?

Obsessed as I am obsessed with this top.
Cute to describe nearly everything.

I hate the term stompy boots, it's used a lot on S&B. Whenever I read it I have a vision of a group of MNers stomping around loudly in army boots 😄

MerryChristmasToYou · 04/01/2024 10:45

Any other ones? @Imnotadentist

I seem to have the idea that they love le style anglaise and le style ecossais but I am not sure if that is true

Hadley Freeman was on the radio talking about britpop or something the other day and kept going on about englishness. I wanted to shout 'it's britishness' at her

excelledyourself · 04/01/2024 11:50

When someone describes something as 'clunky'.

Also when a poster asks anything along the lines of 'Do we like this?' or 'What do we think of these?'

But I also despise the use of 'hive mind' anywhere on MN.

LoobyDop · 04/01/2024 12:04

That annoys the hell out of me, too. It’s as if the poster aspires to be a second-tier mean girl.

MerryChristmasToYou · 04/01/2024 12:18

Not fashion speak, but when a poster who has a very strong opinion an a type of garment, posts pretty much the same on every thread, and gets stroppy on every thread because the other posters don't share the love/hatred for muck boots/ballet flats/crocs/skater dresses/dungarees/wide-legged shirts/barrell jeans/balloon sleeves/whatever

It's the "what are we all wearing this season" ? type posts which irritate me.

It's the faux SATC air to them.

It annoys me too. I mean, you must have some thought or opinion, why don't we start with that?

Chunky jewellery

Lunaballoon · 04/01/2024 13:36

‘Frock’ - I only ever see this word used by fashionista types. Why?

MerryChristmasToYou · 04/01/2024 13:50

I say frock, but also say dress.

Statement jewellery is quite annoying too. As is the MN favourite of "simple jewellery"

SirChenjins · 04/01/2024 14:21

YY to statement jewellery. At my age I should embrace the grey, get a funky haircut, wear a slash of red lipstick, team with statement jewellery, and wear edgy pieces apparently.

For an evening do I should wear killer heels, a well cut black blazer and black skinnies, and a silk cami. Simple gold jewellery will pull it all together.

totalnamechanger · 04/01/2024 14:50

I’m only on page 3 but can see that there are many, many people like me who are constantly seething at ‘trouser, trainer, boot’ Really??? Just one?

Same with ‘so luxe’ ‘so elevated’ And pops 🤯.

I assumed it’s supposed to be tongue in cheek, because it’s an old-fashioned word that would otherwise only be used by elderly men with only a very vague idea of what a dress is. It’s also on the posh side, and I think fashion journalists are nearly always posh because they need family money to compensate for shit pay, and family connections to get them through the door.

When I was little I had "party frocks" and "summer dresses". "Frock" to me is a dress which is more special or flamboyant than just a dress.

You can have a "party dress" or a "party frock" but you'd never have an office frock

Or the "modern, fun granny" look which I think is just as cliched and aging these days as the grey perm and polyester cardies of yesteryear.
Spiky short grey hair, chunky jewelry (especially earrings), "I'm mad, me" spectacle frames (if required), "funky" tops, dungarees* more often than not and the aforementioned "stompy" boots.
Very likely to buy the poor grandchild a t-shirt with "I've got a granny and I'm not afraid to use her" emblazoned on it.

*At least polyester cardies don't make it difficult to have a wee like those buggers do.

SirChenjins · 04/01/2024 15:38

Oh YY to the dungarees @LaMarschallin ! In a moment of weakness I did buy a couple of pairs last summer - I just about got away with the slouchy linen ones with a tight fitting t shirt and my Birkenstocks but ye gads, the denim ones were a sight to behold. I suspect it was the lack of I’m mad me specs that let me down. That and my arse (which is definitely not lacking).

I wonder if "gown" will make a comeback.
I only ever see that now in Jilly Cooper books when the nouveau riche, social climbing antiheroine (married to the rough diamond who's made good but never forgotten his roots and talks common, so is quite acceptable) tries to get people round to her boutique to buy a "lovely ge-own for may mansion-warming party".

OnlyCorrect · 04/01/2024 15:45

'Frock' is just twee too-cool-for-school affectation. See also 'trews', 'kicks', 'specs'. Fashion writers who feel the need to signal how not-serious they are about, er, fashion, because that would be so infra dig, darling. It's just a bit of fun for pin money, not one of the biggest industries in the world or anything.

The comment quotes is LoobyDop's not mine.

I don't have a problem with "frock". It's a word I use and friends (definitely not fashion industry insiders) use.

TitaniasAss · 04/01/2024 17:40

Someone in my staffroom at work today referred to their 'style reference' and I wanted to ask them what the fuck they were on about but couldn't be bothered to listen to the answer to be frank.

Ah yes - sorry.
Didn't mean to quote you instead of LoobyDop.
Hope you don't feel maligned, IHNLtC, and, LoobyDop, sorry for misattributing your interesting comment.
