It’s for the ceremony of my daughter’s bat mitzvah so similar to mother of the bride but 10-20 years younger! I’ll get it shortened and possibly change the shoes.
The photos are bad because I have no idea how to pose for selfies.

I actually like the dress and am surprised by all the comments. I think if you are 5' 3'' (like me) and have a bit of a tummy, then the style you have chosen will be infinitely more flattering than most on here which have high necks and straight across the boobs, they will look like shelves! Those type of dresses, especially in velvet, will also show your stomach far more than the dress you have chosen.

It's not edgy but it is nice, suitable and a good colour and style, I would put your best bra on, get some accessories, do your hair and make-up and wear that! Unless you want to go searching/looking around in which case this might be a good time to step outside your comfort zone.

Blinkityblonk · 27/12/2023 18:03

Something like the green sequin one would also look good, buy a shapewear all in one and it will hold in the tummy. Wrap or something across the stomach area is much more flattering than the high neck/plain skirt ones which look fantastic but not always on a shorter more compact body shape, I've found.

The V necked bodycon dresses look very dated.

But it depends what suits people.

I have tried and returned many dresses that had high necks as they didn't suit me.
I can wear round necks but it depends how high they are cut.

I don't think anyone can say a V neck or a round neck is 'dated' as people suit different styles.

And if they are all in stores now, how can they possibly be dated???

'Fashion' just exists to encourage people to think like this and buy different styles so they all look the same as everyone else.

FortunataTagnips · 27/12/2023 18:06

I think that’s a lovely dress and a good shape for you, just a bit loose in places. Could you get a dressmaker to take it in where it’s gaping and also close up the neck a bit, as it seems a bit booby for synagogue?

DailyEnergyCrisis · 27/12/2023 18:20

I do get people saying that V neck isn’t especially fashionable at the moment and I agree but if high necks are out due to bust (I don’t agree that they can never work) it leaves a scoop neck, sweetheart or round neck. The scoop neck and sweetheart can look quite ‘fleshy’ with big boobs and not particularly chic and the simple round neck dresses posted the OP has said are not to her tastes (I think that’s the common feature of a lot of them with different colours, fabrics, skirts etc). So I think V neck might be the best option for OP, though personally I think a simple round neck dress with a statement skirt would be a good choice.

DailyEnergyCrisis · 27/12/2023 18:22

If I’m honest I really can’t bear a wrap dress- I would avoid for a special occasion. I associate them with maternity and feeding dresses (which of course are fine) but I don’t think they do many of us justice.

Are you near London? Try a shop called After Dark in Finchley or Mary's of Enfield in Hoddesdon.

They will have the kind of thing you are looking for and you will need it to be altered a little so it fits you properly.

Bombshell HQ, as stated before, has a good selection and mainly caters for those with bigger boobs. They have a sale at the moment.

Good luck!

I think it looks nice on you.

I agree with you and I don’t agree the op can’t wear round necks, she just needs a decent bra and for it to be fitted, she can even wear a minimiser, it is a much more stream lined look.

it’s hard to find a dress that looks nice for her, as v neck is so dated now many of the dresses available are seen as frumpy due to it.

I think it looks nice on you.

Unfortunately the top half looks loose across the bust and on her shoulders- at least a size too big- and the sleeves are far too big, neither real elbow length or short sleeves. It's a bad design, all of of proportion. No reflection on the OP at all, but whoever designed it needs to go back to design school.

The skirt looks as if it's pulling across the hips and is tight across the bottom.

TBH the quality of the fabric doesn't look great because the lace seems to 'sag' on the lining.

SiennaMillar · 27/12/2023 19:15

I love it! I think you look gorgeous

BlazingJune · 27/12/2023 19:16

What brand is it @Confuzzleduzzled ?

I can't tell what size you are but the top half looks like someone a size 12 wearing a 14.

Wooloohooloo · 27/12/2023 19:24

You have a great figure but it's a bit frumpy. You could off something much more figure hugging.

BlazingJune · 27/12/2023 19:28

@category12 Don't you agree with most posters that the top half looks too big?

Olika · 27/12/2023 19:32

If you want to wear this dress then definitely it needs to be shortened.

Christmassss · 27/12/2023 19:40

There’s some dodgy dresses being linked.

TheSquareMile · 27/12/2023 19:37

I don't think that the dress in your photo makes the best of your figure and draws attention to your midriff and bottom, to be honest.

Would something like this work for you? I don't know whether you would consider it too plain.

I won’t lie, that’s horrific.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/12/2023 19:47

How does that go with It needs to have the tops of my arms covered for modesty purposes?

zurala · 27/12/2023 19:50

It doesn't fit you on the bodice but that could be sorted by taking the shoulders up which is a quick job for a seamstress. I think it's nice, it just needs to be fitted to you.

Onemoremakesthree · 27/12/2023 19:56

I think it has the potential to be lovely, the colour is gorgeous, it definitely needs some attention from a seamstress across the bust and maybe some shape wear to be picky.
I would go with a different shoe though, maybe gold and gold jewellery

Of all the other suggestions only the Oliver Bonas one would work in my eyes!! Thats gorgeous and I think it could work with your boobs!

Gulp. I can’t think who that would look good on to be honest.

FortunataTagnips · 27/12/2023 20:07

Christ, that’s hideous.
