It’s for the ceremony of my daughter’s bat mitzvah so similar to mother of the bride but 10-20 years younger! I’ll get it shortened and possibly change the shoes.
The photos are bad because I have no idea how to pose for selfies.

Can you make an appt with a dresser at John Lewis/Fenwck/Liberty/Harvey Nicks? It’s important to try on lots of different styles.

HornungTheHelpful · 27/12/2023 17:13

you should wear what you like, if that dress isn’t doing it for you how about some of these:

The Fold dresses are trying to be edgy and fashion forward but missing the mark making them a bit “Debenhams” (but very expensive with it).

Gardeningtime · 27/12/2023 17:19

I’m not a fan of the dresses linked either, but then I find v necks a bit dated.

the issue for me with the ops dress is it doesn’t fit her, it’s too big on top, you can see th4 band of material hanging wider than her shoulder, so the sleeves hang from the wrong place, and the skirt is too tight, pulling at her hips. The sleeves just add to the ill fitting look.

Christmassss · 27/12/2023 17:20

I think it looks ok, I’m imagining it pressed and the OP wearing nice make up with her hair done etc.

The Fold Dresses aren't trying to be edgy. They're very mainstream. That's why I suggested them here for this OP (as the dress the OP picked isn't "edgy") and this event.

Confuzzleduzzled · 27/12/2023 17:27

I’m only 5ft3 so maxi dresses drown me. I also don’t have a flat stomach. I hadn’t eaten before taking the photo and the dress is loose around my waist so it hides my stomach well.
I guess I must be very unfashionable as I think the majority of dresses that have been posted are horrible. And the fold ones are way out of my budget.

Mirabai · 27/12/2023 17:35

I’m sure you can find something more flattering than the dress in the OP.
It sticks on your thighs and swamps your arms making your top half look distorted.

DailyEnergyCrisis · 27/12/2023 17:35

If you think yours is the best of what’s out there, wear it! Doesn’t matter what anyone thinks and you seem to dislike a lot of the styles out there that meet meet the length and arms covered brief.

I’m your height, a similar size and figure and personally would go for a simple and unfussy top half of the the dress (all the extra volume shortens your body), a fitted high waist (a lower waist will show your tummy) and either a column bottom half (similar to yours but fitting well) or a bit of a statement skirt like the Ted Baker one. An ill fitting dress looks cheap and dowdy however much you spend so maybe try a few of the suggestions even if they wouldn’t be your usual style as you might be surprised.

The V necked bodycon dresses look very dated. I don't like saying "dated" as it just means no more than "I don't like it" but they do look as if they've been hanging around in a wardrobe without managing ever to be truly classic vintage or ironically retro.

I guess I mean like this type of thing. It’s £500 but feels a bit Wallis.

That's very good advice.

Oh, you're right. That dress really doesn't work. Plain blue with bracelet length sleeves would be much better.

DyslexicPoster · 27/12/2023 17:42

It's a lovely dress but the cross over top isn't quite right. I have a hidden popper in my cross front dresses

Toesaresoweird · 27/12/2023 17:43

To nit pick I don't like the sleeves so much. The bottom half is lovely. The colour nice. Shoes yes. Neck line flatters. If you want to wear a more fitted dress I suppose you could wear shapewear knickers to pull tummy in? You have a lovely shape. I love the fabric of the skirt part.

Alwaysoneoddsock · 27/12/2023 17:49

I like the dress you posted more than the alternative suggestions. It looks a little big above the waist but you could have that altered if you have the length adjusted. I think black shoes go well too.

I don’t think either the top or the bottom work. The skirt sticks on her thighs showcasing the fat - she needs a fuller skirt to flatter. The arms are far too voluminous and the bodice too loose, the top half needs to be more fitted or at least less less voluminous.

Crikeyalmighty · 27/12/2023 17:56

I actually like the Color but you have a fab figure and I don't think it does much for you- I think it's got a bit too much going on- slightly fussy top (and I love a wrap over) combined with a fussy hem

SpidersAreShitheads · 27/12/2023 17:57

I’m surprised at these comments as I really love the dress OP!! I don’t normally like fussy styles but I think the elements work together really well.

The only issue is the chest area - you say you’re big up top but the photos make it look as if you’ve got small boobs that don’t fill the dress properly. Theres too much fabric there - the crossover needs to sit snugger to make the floaty sleeves work. The V also looks as if it’s sitting too low. Maybe a different bra and some adjustments in the chest crossover and the dress will be perfect!

ps - I don’t like many of the other dresses suggested here either so I guess we have similar taste 😂🤷‍♀️

Gardeningtime · 27/12/2023 17:58

What about something a little more steam lined op?

Crikeyalmighty · 27/12/2023 17:59

@mirabi. Yes- think they would be more flattering - nice!! I couldn't wear that 2nd one though as my large boobs don't suit high necks !!
