To think wearing, for instance, dresses with a high slit up the side eventually looks desperate?

I don't think women should have to dress frumpy with age, but at some point a face that's a little older above a revealing dress looks a bit wrong, even on the loveliest figure. Baps out is one thing, but the dresses with a high slit up the side don't look right.

AIBU?

Celebrities might do it on the red carpet but usually they've had lashings of botox, fillers etc.

Legs are normally one of the last places to show the signs of age (unlike books, arms, décolletage) so makes perfect sense for someone to prefer showing them off rather than boobs!

Also I can't fathom hiding your body just because your old. Do you also disapprove of older women wearing shorts - a practical non attention seeking garment?

Also, there's nothing wrong in wanting attention or 'showing off' your body. Much better than repressed insecure people who fell out of love with their bodies. I'd much rather see a woman's legs on show than the Lycra clad Mamils package.

Bizarre thread.

I’m mid-30s so probably not the age group the OP is referring to, but I wear short shorts and crop tops, and have my body on show a lot (in the summer when it’s warm enough…). On holiday I will walk around in a bikini top and tiny denim shorts.

I have never worried about my age and thought I couldn’t wear something just because I’m not in my 20s or whatever. The same would apply in my 40s, 50s etc.

Like PP, I work incredibly hard for my body and I am not going to go covering it up because prudes don’t like to see a bare midriff or full legs on show. 😁

StarlightLady · 22/12/2023 09:40

I’m about to go out with a fairly high split at the back of my dress today. I’m not sure whether that makes me desperate, but keeping my eye out for the MN police 😀.

@porridgeisbae I totally agree with you! I think long gowns with splits up the side to the waist look terrible. the shame is the dresses would be lovely without such long splits. I'm 58 and have worn a fair few evening dresses and ball gowns in my time but would never wear anything so revealing. Its not that I'm a prude I don't mind strapless or backless but I think the dress loses all its classic elegance when it becomes nothing more than a sarong. I love the dresses of the Forties Fifties and Sixties

I don’t get the logic here at all. Why is a back or someone’s shoulders acceptable and legs not?

All are equally visible in a swimming pool. And before anyone answers we are not talking swimsuits, which is true, all are parts of the body that can be displayed.

Its not the showing of flesh that I have an issue with its that to me when there is a very high split - to the waist or just below - it spoils the cut, shape and silhouette of the gown.

AtillaTheHon · 24/12/2023 13:47

Did op mention the waist height splits though? I think a general thread about why they aren't very nice would have gone down better. I'm not a fan of those either on anyone of any age. Doesn't mean I'm offended by them or would tell anyone else how to dress though

Princessfluffy · 24/12/2023 14:19

It's highly unpleasant to try to police what older women are wearing. Are you always so controlling OP?

I agree. The dress is then just an uninteresting piece of cloth. It's the same with most slit dresses.

Neitheronethingnortheother · 24/12/2023 15:21

Its very different though saying that you don't like dresses with high slits because you think it spoils the cut of a garment and saying that older women wearing dresses with splits in them are desperate

I’ve missed something here. When were “waist high” slits and “cuts of dresses” mentioned up thread? We were told it was about looking desperate but “baps” (l hasten to add not my word) were OK.

Char65 · 24/12/2023 16:50

@StarlightLady @Neitheronethingnortheother Sorry I misread the OP and agree that I have picked up the wrong end of the stick. I think @AngelaRippingMyLegIntheAir post has got it right. I was bringing in prejudice against waist splits in evening gowns which nis a particular irritation to me although I do think women (and men) should dress age appropriately and there are things you can get a way with wearing in your teens and 20's like miniskirts and hot pants which you can't get away with at my age, 58.😁

@AngelaRippingMyLegIntheAir i have no intention of clicking a DM link because I know it’ll be sneering and misogynistic and just plain nasty.

Yes I agree when I re-read the post I thought it was quite rude and the language was derogatory... may be I'm a bit innocent about all these things😀

She's not policing or controlling anyone FFS! She's just saying she doesn't like it.

I made the mistake of clicking the link and you are spot on - it was a vile, misogynistic, spiteful article. The only silver lining is that the women they had photographed to sneer at actually all looked fantastic. Fit, healthy and happy - everything the Daily Hate dislikes in a woman.

Eh? There was no editorial or authorial comments in the article apart from a very short opening comment. The rest of the article was personal statements by women about what they wear and how they aren't prescribed by their age.

I have to be honest I saw nothing wrong with it either, Femail used to do some good fashion pieces but not bought the Mail for years.

Deathraystare · 27/12/2023 18:06

The only thing I do not like (this is personal and all about me) is it is usually the left hand side and I have a swollen knee due to rheumatoid arthritis so don't want to show that!
