To think wearing, for instance, dresses with a high slit up the side eventually looks desperate?

I don't think women should have to dress frumpy with age, but at some point a face that's a little older above a revealing dress looks a bit wrong, even on the loveliest figure. Baps out is one thing, but the dresses with a high slit up the side don't look right.

AIBU?

Celebrities might do it on the red carpet but usually they've had lashings of botox, fillers etc.

I wouldn't think someone dressed in they way you described would be desperate for attention but even if they were I don't think it would matter. There's nothing wrong with wanting a bit of attention especially if you've got dressed up for a night out.

Candycurrantbun · 20/12/2023 13:23

So you think women with older faces should cover up their old decrepit bodies? Perhaps they should wear a nice pair of slacks and a polo neck jumper in case they offend your eyes?

WeRateSquirrels · 20/12/2023 13:25

I’ve got no ‘baps’ but great legs so I will be continuing to get them out 🙄

AtillaTheHon · 20/12/2023 13:26

Indeed @Cotswoldmama. Wanting attention when you've made a big effort with your appearance isn't the terrible crime it's sometimes made out to be

crackofdoom · 20/12/2023 13:28

Wow, the internalised misogyny is strong in this one 🙄

(Plus, purely from a POV of what looks flattering, the legs often continue to look good long after the more, er, fleshy parts of the body have gone south, so it makes sense to show your legs off more the older you get!)

HardcoreLadyType · 20/12/2023 13:29

I think posing with your leg stuck out of the slit in the dress is weird. Was it Angelina Jolie who did it a few years ago, and now it seems to be everywhere.

A dress with a long slit is fine, though. It gives just a glimpse of legs as the person is walking, so can be quite elegant.

I don’t see why it’s a look to be avoided whereas showing décolletage is not? I do think too much body showing is inelegant, but not just for older women - younger ones as well. That’s a matter of taste, though, which is really just my personal preference.

Makemydaypunk · 20/12/2023 13:30

How old are you OP?

WhenWereYouUnderMe · 20/12/2023 13:30

Ooh look at me look at my body?!

Are you 11?

Keep your small-minded judgey thoughts to yourself. How dull you must be.

OkayScooby · 20/12/2023 13:32

Haha. Nice. Maybe they could wear the slit dress, but cover up their old faces?

Prayfortheangels · 20/12/2023 13:36

How very dare women get older

Personally I love seeing eighty year olds, disabled people, slim people, fat people, people with cellulite, people with no cellulite, people with artificial limbs, people in wheelchairs, people with guide dogs, people of all ethnic backgrounds, young adults, middle aged people, poor people and rich people dressing in whatever they want all the time and only prioritising their own feelings and confidence about how high their dress slits are.

a-fucking-men!

I LOVE the modern culture of body positivity and acceptance - it’s a world away from the miserable ‘wear dark trousers to hide your fat thighs’ bollocks that i grew up with in the 90s and 00s. I love seeing people of all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes wear what they want with joy and confidence.

TheDandyLion · 20/12/2023 13:43

I think you are more desperate for attention than the women you are referring to OP.

MinnieMountain · 20/12/2023 13:44

I’ve always stuck with one or the other but that’s my choice.

These days my legs are my best feature. Funnily enough swimming 3 times a week does fuck all for the radiotherapy and surgery scars on one breast.

TheOGCCL · 20/12/2023 13:46

I don't like wearing dresses so am saved from this shame, phew.

ZenNudist · 20/12/2023 13:48

Watch out, your misogyny AND ageism is showing.

porridgeisbae · 20/12/2023 13:48

How old are you OP?

Nearly 47.

A dress with a long slit is fine, though. It gives just a glimpse of legs as the person is walking, so can be quite elegant.

I don't think the modern take on it necessarily does that, they seem more revealing somehow.

I love seeing people of all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes wear what they want with joy and confidence.

It can certainly bring more joy (and laughter) to the world at times. Grin

I also don't understand how celebrities having botox in their face would mean that it's ok for them to get their legs out. You're ideas are very bizarre to me.

It's the contrast between the face and the outfit that I think makes it look a bit 'off.'

I saw a woman in I would say her 70s on the tube the other day. She was wearing a jumper dress with high split, patterned fishnet-ish tights and chunky boots and had long, corkscrew curls silver hair. She looked fabulous.

I think I would've thought she looked wacky but that's personal taste I guess. I'm often trying not to look wacky even though it's probably my natural tendency. Grin

Can you expand on what you mean by ‘desperate’?

Like 'ooh, look at me, look at my body.'

But what’s wrong with saying ‘Look at me, look at my body’? If that’s what someone wants to communicate, why not? I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with it, regardless of whether you have a body that meets the narrow requirements of being generally considered appropriate and desirable.

DollyDaydreamW · 20/12/2023 14:39

Aah now the OP is asking for links to modest underwear. Is it a t-word? I CBA to find out. This thread does feel a little trippy and trappy

HipHopGirl · 20/12/2023 14:56

Well I'm 54 and today am wearing a fabulous Topshop flared long denim skirt with a huge slit up the side.

Should I be burnt at the stake? 🙄

OnlyCorrect · 20/12/2023 15:54

BiscuitNicely played OP, desperately showing your whole ass on the internet 😬🍿

Ooh that sounds lovely! Is it a recent top shop thing? We don't have one near here any more.

Shopper727 · 20/12/2023 16:23

I think op people should wear what they want to wear. Do you think only people with ‘Lots of Botox etc’ can wear revealing clothes? If you don’t like it fine, sometimes I think oh that’s a bold choice but good for her because I recognise we are all different and want to wear clothes that we enjoy/reflect our personality or whatever it may be, it’s great to have fun with clothes and try new styles etc.

Describing women as desperate and saying ‘baps out’ is so immature it’s no wonder people feel self conscious when there are people witting posts like this.

Dynamoat · 20/12/2023 16:26

I think if you can bear the breeze then it's fine whoever you are.

LlynTegid · 20/12/2023 16:42

I don't think age is the issue. I bet most are designed by men.
