Nonewclothes2024 · 14/12/2023 18:16

I need to stop buying clothes.
I have far too many.
I feel overwhelmed deciding what to wear every day.
I wear a uniform to work.
I have deleted all shopping apps.
I am unsubscribing from shop e mails.

Anyone else ?

@Cottagecheeseisnotcheese
I struggle with shoes I have arthritis in my feed and feel your struggle. My UGG boots passed away last winter and I've missed them I can't find anything else as comfortable as that one particular pair.

Moments silence for your footwear?

NeedWineNow · 08/01/2024 16:57

I failed miserably with this last year so have resolved to have a 'low' spend rather than 'no spend'. I've taken a plunge on the Roka lucky dip that I'm now waiting to arrive. I've also been looking for a long padded coat and to my surprise and delight picked up exactly what I wanted in the charity shop today - Superdry, New with tags for £25. Perfect for the snow we've had today.

I will need a couple of bras and possibly something for a wedding in the summer (Indian wedding - waiting on dresscode) but really don't think I will need much else. More importantly I'm aiming to lose a stone to reduce blood pressure so that will open up more of my wardrobe of which there is far too much.

Andnowshesatoddler · 08/01/2024 18:41

@NeedWineNow I fell down the road trap too convinced myself I needed a dog walk bag only got the small one but I didn't need it until I saw that thread!

NeedWineNow · 08/01/2024 19:36

@Andnowshesatoddler Me too! I've never looked at Roka before but kept justifying it to myself before taking the plunge!

Perhapsanorhertimewouldbebetter · 08/01/2024 21:05

Nearly succumbed in the charity shop today - a flipping fleecey fluffy jumper which I did NOT need, despite it being on the sale rail!
I decided today that I'll use my small amount of Christmas money to stock up on some toiletries that I need, then I won't be tempted to splurge it on stuff I don't need.
My new fleece leggings arrived today from mum too, and it is handy to have another pair (cold here just now), but they were a late xmas present so not a 2024 cost (of mine). Well done everyone so far on making efforts to attempt to spend less on clothes.

was doing well but my black lace ups the sole is coming apart so will need new shoes this is a replacement I do not have many shoes as have dodgy ankles and need stiff supportive shoes. I dread shoe shopping it is not a treat there will probably be a thousand different styles but only perhaps 2 that fit!!!

I think shoes are acceptable , essentials. I will need new work shoes and trousers this year. I wear a uniform , but own trousers. I know exactly which ones , I'll run in and buy them and nothing else 😳

@Cottagecheeseisnotcheese could you get your old shoes reheeled? You might get another year out of them that way. I got my lace-ups reheeled last summer and they've lasted really well

I'm not doing great but I wasn't going to do a no-buy but a low-buy. January is usually the time I spend most in the year because sales are good, and then my spending goes down throughout the year. I have a list of few things I need, mainly bottoms and some outdoor stuff, but I just ordered some trousers for dc and semi-accidentally bought myself a jumper and a t-shirt. Which are NOT on my wishlist

serendipities · 09/01/2024 06:00

I’ve found my first week quite empowering but emails are the devil! I didn’t realise how much hold they had on me. I’ll mindlessly open one, click on one of the links and before I know it I’m three pages deep in a scroll hole. I think I’ll have to spend a few minutes each day unsubscribing from mailing lists.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 09/01/2024 06:00

@Pigtailsandall pi unfortunately it's not that simple the sole is splitting away from upper and they let water in had them 7 years they have been mended before. Much as I dislike it need to spend time in Glasgow looking for a replacement.

CharlotteRumpling · 09/01/2024 08:09

Not bought anything except a couple of bras as my old ones fell apart. I might buy a couple of heat tech vests for the cold spell, but nothing else. All the money I saved has gone towards experiences.

Oh no I saw I shirt I really love (style, colour, fabric, I've tried it in another colourway before and know it looks good on me) and I'm struggling to keep myself from buying :(

I've decided I'd only buy 3 pieces of clothing this year (I thought 0 would be too harsh and I'd need a summer blouse for work later anyway). I don't need that shirt even though it looks like a piece of art. 😩

DyslexicPoster · 13/01/2024 23:06

@toucaninjapan If you love the t shirt and it will get lots of wear, buy it!

I have two pairs of boots in the next sale because I know by next year my current ones will be fit for the bin. I have glued the soles in twice now. They leak. There's no waste and I don't think there's waste in a tshirt you might wear weekly either tbh. 1 thing this month? But stop looking 😄

toucaninjapan · 13/01/2024 23:32

@DyslexicPoster I think I won't wear it this much because of the colour (candy pink) as I'm trying to wear less pink and more "mature" colours. I didn't look for it, I just opened instagram and the ad with it popped out, I guess I should steer clear of insta for some time 🙈

moimichme · 14/01/2024 09:38

toucan if it isn't your (new) preferred style/fashion, then I think you should stay strong and not buy it! Especially if you have it in other colours already.

Two weeks complete for me, as long as I don't buy anything unnecessary today!

I think that Christmas excess + work being very busy is still keeping me on track so far - I haven't even been scrolling much.

My bank account - with Christmas credit card bill, after school club etc., plus a £££ utility bill - doesn't have anything spare this month either, which also helps!

I'm going to try the 5 clothing items challenge, after keeping it below 12 last year. New, for me, will include second-hand purchases. I'll likely need two new pairs of shoes (running trainers and Chelsea boots) this year, so this will be hard. But I really have enough!

Mercurial123 · 14/01/2024 10:57

My low buy started November 1. Just bought some trousers for travel as my Lululemon ones are really old and needed replacing. Bought Athleta Brooklyn trousers from EBay.

My limit was 5 items for 12 months, so I am doing OK.

verdantverdure · 14/01/2024 16:42

I plan to buy 5 items, the same as last year.

I find it keeps me from that “it’s a bargain, it’s rude not to!” mindset if I have to think hard about whether it’s really the best thing to use up one of only 5 slots on. There’s no more taking a punt on things thatIm not sure about.

I already have one of my five because I saw the perfect thing in the sale. (A pale blue sleeveless shirt to wear under jumpers in the autumn winter and in its own possibly tied at the front in summer.)

I ask myself some questions. I think about cost per wear. If I already have one really similar why would I choose to wear this one? What would go out of the rotation if I bring this in? How do I feel about that?

With a shirt that already works for me in a different pattern or colour I’d want to know that I need it and I’m not just buying it because it’s cheaper than usual, but If I thought it through and still thought it worthy of a spot in the 2024 five then I’d go for it.

serendipities · 14/01/2024 17:05

I like the idea of buying five things throughout the year. I’ve been feeling really guilty all week because I bought a pair of boots. In my defence, I’ve wanted them for over a year and I found them brand new on Vinted for half the price. Still feel bad about it though 🫣

TheOGCCL · 14/01/2024 20:48

I find January the easiest month for no spend on clothes. The days all seem the same, Spring is a way off, lots of money spent in December, just doesn’t seem such a hardship as it’s only been two weeks. It’s when all the new stuff comes in and the weather starts to change that I’m tempted, and again in Autumn.

Five items is what we should all be aiming for according to this initiative

Could you commit to buying just five new items of clothing in a year?

From realising your personal style differs to the one prescribed by Instagram to discovering the joys of a wool de-piller – here are five people who made that pledge a year ago, on what they bought and what it taught them

Perhapsanorhertimewouldbebetter · 15/01/2024 07:04

Here to admit spends of £9.50 last week:
long top/dress 1.50, long top/dress 3.00, top 2.00, warm scarf 3.00, all from local charity shops.
I am actually not too bothered by those spends as all, apart from the scarf, are on my 'keep a look out for these because I could actually do with a couple more' charity shop list.
No other clothes spends in 14 days (12/14 NSD).
No more charity shop visits will happen this month though, because I feel like that wee look was enough.

CharlotteRumpling · 15/01/2024 08:54

Still not buying. I did a big cull of my clothes this weekend. I definitely do not need more, and have no space. I am now hoping to buy for the pretty casual life I have, and not for the life I used to have!

Not that I am not tempted. Some of my favourite brands are having huge sales, but I have marked the items and will buy next year, since they have the same stuff every year. I am hoping to not buy anything until summer, except possibly socks and underwear.

I think I can easily do 5 items a year.

VimtoVimto · 15/01/2024 08:56

I tend to treat charity shop purchases as ‘renting’ an item. I feel no hesitation in donating them back if I’m not happy with them, or will wear them for a season and then redonate.

caramond · 15/01/2024 17:55

Halfway through the month and not bought anything yet. I was very tempted by a jumper when I saw one of my favourite brands is having a sale but I really don't need another jumper so have resisted.

I think I'll find spring/summer easier because the colours in shops are not very me (lots of brights and pastels in all the new collections I've seen advertised). Autumn will be much harder because I'm really drawn to deep autumnal colours and the materials too (corduroy, velvet, wool). So I'm thinking if I manage to buy nothing until about June/July time, I can then very mindfully buy a couple of things from A/W collections.

Mirabai · 15/01/2024 18:13

I said this on Jan 1. However I’ve seen a nice camel jacket for spring…

I’ve seen some good sandals and trainers for summer already..

I will try very hard 🙈

Beaverbridge · 15/01/2024 19:21

Caved today in charity shops. 9 items all brand news with tags. Total £25. Nearly made it to bus stop but went into charity shop beside it. Lovely gold colour M and S raincoat £7. That's it no more till summer!
