Not buying clothes 2024

Nonewclothes2024 · 14/12/2023 18:16

I need to stop buying clothes.
I have far too many.
I feel overwhelmed deciding what to wear every day.
I wear a uniform to work.
I have deleted all shopping apps.
I am unsubscribing from shop e mails.

Anyone else ?

Ha thanks @verdantverdure! Wearing said belt right now. Spent most of 2022 and 2023 searching for a thin dark brown belt with gold buckle even when on holiday! So yes I feel pretty justified - it immediately sold out again as well.

HelenHywater · 26/01/2024 18:12

I don't scroll at all. I unfollowed all fashion accounts on instagram (I followed ALOT) and unsubscribed from all the emails so I don't get inviting offers. I don't read the style & beauty threads here (I did venture onto a trainer thread today). I'm not allowing myself any exceptions except to replace lost or unwearable essentials. If I lose (or gain) a couple of stone then I will be able to buy clothes but if in the case of gaining stones I will probably feel too fat to buy anything anyway!

I'm doing it in RL with a friend so we're holding each other accountable.

I feel really good, I definitely bought too many clothes and spent too much money. I am trying to wear different things in my wardrobe too.

It is only 26 January of course, so there's a long way to go!

HelenHywater · 26/01/2024 18:14

Solovair boots are the only thing I've had a slight twinge about @CharlotteRumpling (I do already have one pair though....).

moimichme · 27/01/2024 07:34

Same here, Helen - I've unsubscribed from various places and trying to avoid seeing the NEW, because I'm content with what I have and don't need the temptation. The only S&B threads I'm reading are the ones like this, aimed at reducing consumption. So far, so good!

Even if some purchases have been made, it doesn't mean you failed - it sounds like people are making more considered and some second-hand (rather than purely impulse) buys and that's surely a good thing for our finances, extra clutter and for the environment, too. Good luck everyone!

D20 · 27/01/2024 08:03

I agree. Don’t put yourself down as a failure if you are making better choices than you did last year!

lindyloo57 · 27/01/2024 09:47

Only 3 items this month so far, I do have a order to pick up today at next sale, this month is hard for me as I now and most of last year only buy reduced in sale, so obviously Dec Jan there are so many bargains, I do only buy what I need ( most of the time) so my plan is not to buy in the spring summer months as I have more than enough summer clothing and shoes.

CharlotteRumpling · 27/01/2024 10:22

I only buy reduced in sale too, mostly coats and jumpers at half price. but I have decided that I am not going to buy anything reduced this year. I am not going buy anything except socks and underwear until June. I am applying for a new office job though, so my caveat is I may need something to wear if I get it ( unlikely though).

With my savings this month, I went to Edward Scissorhands with DD. Much better than buying more recycled polyester!

CharlotteRumpling · 27/01/2024 10:22

Oh also don't click on any ads and don't read most S and B threads.

BaconAndAvocado · 28/01/2024 10:11

I caved!!!

In my defence, it was a practical purchase and not a frivolous one.

Went to see Depeche Mode last night at the O2 and I was overheating in my jumper so bought a T shirt 🤦🏼‍♀️

It did stop me from melting though....

HelenHywater · 28/01/2024 10:34

I haven't caved. But I'm having a moment of temptation. I read an article on Claudia Winkleman's outfits on The Traitors, and am so tempted by her doc martens and her leggings. Even though I'm nothing like as thin as Claudia Winkleman. If I wasn't doing No Buy I would have bought both of those by now.

Netcam · 29/01/2024 12:33

Wow, almost February. Think I'm doing well, since 24th March last year I've bought 4 pairs of socks and DH got me a dress for my birthday if that counts. Hope I'll make it to 24th March this year with no more purchases and then I'm going to try for another year. The only thing that might catch me out is that I'm applying for jobs at the moment and depending on the organisation, I might need some kind of smart jacket or blazer for an interview, which I don't own.

DyslexicPoster · 29/01/2024 13:06

I've still not bought anything. I have had a few items wear out ( jeans I had already repaired, socks, underwear). It's really tempting to buy more but I'm hoping by the end of the year i will have geniune need to buy clothes.

That’s truly impressive 👏

I was looking at Dr Martins on Vinted. They are famous for shredding your feet until you wear them in. I favorite a few, though I might try some of in town one day and manged to park that itch for a while. Definitely one to thinkabout once existing boots are Binned off.

Beaverbridge · 29/01/2024 18:24

Caved in a charity shop today. Beautiful striped raincoat £7. Brand new Next top £2. Per Una long length cardigan £3. I will weat them though!!.

Darklane · 29/01/2024 18:47

Nearly February!!!!
The only thing I’ve caved in & bought since before Christmas is an electric toothbrush for the dogs! Hoping to save ££££ on vet dentals 😁

Mirabai · 29/01/2024 21:16

Cashmere scarf from eBay and a garnet pendant. 👎🏼

Got my eye on some shoes.

caramond · 30/01/2024 17:53

Very happy to get to the end of the month without buying any clothes at all. 🙂 And it hasn't even felt difficult. 1 down, 11 months to go...

Andnowshesatoddler · 31/01/2024 18:54

Brought a £6 scarf from accessorize.
Brought and returned far too much as it's all trash at the moment.
Do have a parcel to collect though so that might be a bag for £32 soon too.
Definitely not bad for January!
Good luck for February everybody.

notawittyname1954 · 31/01/2024 19:18

Im doing this too. Trying to only buy if something falls to bits and needs replacing. i have enough clothes, shoes, jewellery, perfume, im also including books in my purchase ban. Going to have a big clear out of what i dont wear too.

Tiddlywinkly · 31/01/2024 22:05

I am on a low buy rather than no-buy. I read a Guardian article about some women who limited their clothing purchases to 5 items in a year and I'm happy with that.

I'm proud that I returned two orders that I probably would have retained last year. So far I have kept a sweater and a t-shirt. Both are variations of things I wear a lot of, so I'm happy with my purchases.

I, too, should include books.

Although I might actually find that harder tbh. Booking buying is a much worthier pursuit!

Darklane · 01/02/2024 08:17

I’m trying at least to limit my book buying to kindle daily 99p deals. At least that way it doesn’t add to the already overloaded shelves & the 99p restriction limits my choice, except there are such good deals some days

VimtoVimto · 01/02/2024 10:41

I try to limit my books to 99p Kindle deals but I’m being stricter with myself this year and not buy everything that takes my fancy.

moimichme · 03/02/2024 20:17

For books, I've really been enjoying the library and listening to their audio books on BorrowBox when I walk to work or go for a run. It's great!

Today I've bought my first clothing item for the year. It's new rather than second-hand, which I feel a bit guilty about, but work is so busy I just don't have time to browse and I wanted a nice top to go with a beautiful lilac skirt I got last year, to wear for my birthday date with DH. (Who is lovely but a bit more practical - he is buying me a new pair of running shoes for my birthday - it was his suggestion, but my current ones do need replacing!).

I'm also planning to buy one MAC lipstick 💄 for a birthday present to myself - but that's it. Must not overdo it on makeup or skincare this year. I'm on that no buy thread on here, too!
