Do you think this dress is a bit dated to wear to a Christmas party.

I’ve had this dress for about five years and was thinking of wearing it to a Christmas party. The party is at a posh hotel and will be a drinks, canapés, dancing type of event.
The party is for a hobby I do, it will be about 2/3 women and last year many wore sequins and other sparkly numbers.
I am five feet one and a size 14 so the skirt is mid thigh on me and shows off the best part of my legs and looks nice (I think) on my curvy hips/bum.
Do you think it looks a bit dated?

Do you think this dress is a bit dated to wear to a Christmas party.

Honestly, yes I do. The 2 in 1 dress is more 2010 even than 5 years ago. I think it could look nice with black opaques and chunky boots for a more casual event, but it doesn't sound ideal for the event you're going to

if looking 'current' is something important to you for this event, then I do think this dress is dated, it feels very 2010-2020 to me. That's not to say I think it's horrible, but in all honesty is is dated.

I am not a fashionista but for my 10 pence worth it looks lovely.

Not to my taste but out in central London last night I saw dozens of women wearing similar (ages - guessing obviously - from 20s up to 50s).

A little bit but I really like it...if you like it and it looks good on you then definitely wear it.

It's not currently fashionable, but there's nothing wrong with that as you're going to hang out with friends who are presumably not going to 'mean girl' you? Unless the hobby is fashion trend-spotting or something 😁

Well it’s five years out of date so yes in a basic sense but I think it depends on what accessories you’re thinking. Jewellery and shoes date an outfit more than the outfit itself a lot of the time. For Christmas I also think a lot of people bring out old favourites as you don’t get many opportunities to wear very sparkly things. Anything goes really at this time of year.

I don’t feel fabulous in it, I feel pretty good in it and I’m chuffed I’ve dieted back into it as I bought to wear for a significant birthday of mine 5 years ago. I think it’s on my mind that I wore it for a big birthday.

Pros are it isn’t doesn’t make me hot like some Sequin dresses and I already have it plus some accessories so it won’t cost anything. Also it’s definitely wearable and would be fine for the party.

Cons, it isn’t new, doesn’t really show of my waist which is quite small, it’s dated and is it making the most of losing over 2.5 stone?

I'm interested in fashion, or at least more than some are on this board, but I honestly don't think the normal rules apply to Christmas parties. If it's sparkly I wouldn't give it another thought, or if I did, it would be more about accessories, shoes, tights etc.

I also wouldn't buy a new dress that I was only likely to wear for a couple of weeks a year year, not unless I absolutely had to or if it was for a very special occasion.

Congratulations on the weight loss.

Thanks everyone, I’m going to go for it, I think I’m overthinking it as I wore it for a big birthday. I’m sure I’ll have just as fun time
in a five year old dress as a brand new one and the cash I’ve saved I can spend on an extra glass of something fizzy.

there's also definitely a difference between what people think when you outright ask them "is this dated" and make them think about it vs just seeing them. If I met a friend wearing that it wouldn't cross my mind "yikes, X is a about 7 years out of date with that dress..."

it’s fab
I think we’re made to believe anything a year old is outdated
all to do with fast fashion etc
lots of sequins at my Christmas party. The style is lovely.

Surely what is dated is to think that you need something new or different for every occasion?

Even if you buy second hand, there's still the impact of transporting it from the seller to you, packaging etc.

What matters is whether you look and feel good in it. The 'So last season, darling' thing is irrelevant when more people are buying from Vinted, eBay and charity shops. It's style over fashion at the moment, otherwise we'd all be in silver pleather trousers.
Edited to say: If you want to fashion your dress up though, how about some thigh-length boots!

This was my first thought too I think it’s more than 5 years out of date!
