Curling hair with straightening irons - why can’t I get the hang of it?

I have watched all the You Tube videos, bought all the products and invested huge amounts of time into curling my hair with straightening irons, but I just can’t get it to work.

Does anyone else struggle, or is it just me? The hairdresser can style my hair beautifully with straightening irons, so it’s not my hair, it’s me 😔.

@Brumbies it doesn’t make sense, does it? I leave the hairdressers with a cascade of sleek curls. When I try to do it myself, I end up looking like one of the Wild Women of Wonga.

Ha! Yes it does look a bit dodgy but I swear it’s brilliant. I’ll see if I can find a video to show how it works

The video doesn’t do it justice, my curls look better than that but it demonstrate how it works. I can get a more uniform large wave but I guess it’s versatile 😊

It’s not just you, in fact my hairdresser says even she can’t curl her own hair with straighteners.
I have a GHD rise hot brush and find that super easy to curl my hair with.

Can you make ribbon curls for presents with the edge of a pair of scissors or a ruler? It's a very similar tension and angle if you can.

@NeverDropYourMooncup this is a very useful way to look at it as I literally have never been able to curl my hair with straightener but I can do the present string curl!!!

You don't curl the hair like you would with a curling wand, you kind of twist it whilst pulling...

I think whatever you are doing it will be different always as your hairdresser positions her hand differently, it’s at a different angle.

Use a curling wand. Far easier than straighteners and you don't have to think about the angle to have your hand

Me neither. Always end up with a frizzy mess. I've given up and wear it straight unless hairdresser does it.

I can’t do it either, when I try my straighteners don’t glide effortlessly down my hair, it sort of stops and starts and I just get weird dents, I use ghd’s the same as the YouTube tutorials, must be my weird hair.

Twist and pull gently

I’ve been doing it for years. It does help if your straighteners are curved though.

i have some that have plates on the outside too. So much easier
