Curling hair with straightening irons - why can’t I get the hang of it?

Marie2023 · 05/12/2023 19:26

I have watched all the You Tube videos, bought all the products and invested huge amounts of time into curling my hair with straightening irons, but I just can’t get it to work.

Does anyone else struggle, or is it just me? The hairdresser can style my hair beautifully with straightening irons, so it’s not my hair, it’s me 😔.

I tied my hair up in a pony tail for bed last night and I've still got decent curls this morning. I promise I don't work for Amazon (or whoever makes the Glamouriser) but I would highly recommend it. Thank you Duh

Does the Glamouriser work ok on fine shoulder length hair. I can only see reviews from people with thick long hair.

Duh · 14/12/2023 09:44

@TestingOneTwoThree I have very fine hair just above my shoulders and it works on me. In another life I had long thick hair extensions and it worked on those too 😊

@MapleSyrupWaffles I’d not heard of Curl Secret so can’t say but it looks a very similar product to the Glamouriser so I’m sure either would do the trick.

How does the Glamouriser compare to the Curl Secret, anyone know? They look like kind of similar tools.

I also can't curl with a straightening iron, though I have the cloud 9 one with curved plates. My ends just end up always looking scraggly and the curl doesn't stay. It's a shame as I have naturally wavy/frizzy hair, but when I straighten it to get it smoother, the curl won't stay. I've had no success with the many many curl/wavy potions, so it needs to be straightened and then re-curled, but I can never really get it looking as nice as the hairdresser does!

If it’s anything like the curl secret I’d stay the feck away 😂

I thought the curl secret was brilliant. People said their hair was getting trapped and burnt and I just put it down to incorrect use.

no. It happened. And I put it straight in the bin.

i don’t like using straighteners for curling, I try to reduce the use of them as much as I can

ive been using the shark flex style and it’s ok, seems a bit less damaging

Thanks @Duh. I might treat myself 😁

I wondered this as I don’t really like the curls that Curl Secret gives me. I look, as someone said upthread, like Charles I.

My Glamouriser arrives tomorrow! Watched some YouTube videos and it does look good, I too am concerned that I will resemble Charles 1 but after watching the videos I think the secret is not too many seconds using the curler (so it is looser) and the separation of the curls afterwards. I have fine shoulder length hair so fingers crossed!

SteamingTangerine · 14/12/2023 14:14

I couldn't do it for years until I finally bought some good straighteners (mine are Cloud9), watched videos and practiced. I find it helps to curl the left side using my right hand and vice versa.

Ha to the Charles I look! I tend to use the medium setting for the full time and the curls initially look a little tight or ringlety but just running your fingers gently through them gives them a relaxed look.

Adds Glamouriser to the list of things MN made me buy.

Do you wait until they’ve cooled and set, and then brush out gently with a wide tooth comb? That’s what I do with my curl secret, and I actually really like it! I only usually do it for weddings but I should do it more often because it makes me feel pretty.

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 15/12/2023 22:00

But yes you have to be careful, I’ve had the hair trapped and feeling the sense of doom that I might be stuck there forever!!

bigpawsjames · 15/12/2023 23:53

Put the hair straighteners on your hair as if straightening.

Turn 180 degrees.

Pull as though straightening.

Fedupbeingworriedallthegoddamntime · 19/12/2023 13:06

In case anyone is still reading my Glamouriser arrived and my review is……….OMG absolute game changer! I cannot believe how good it is and I don’t resemble Charles 1 either! Bonus points! Thanks to you @Duh for the recommendation I am chuffed to bits!

@Fedupbeingworriedallthegoddamntime I am so delighted to hear this!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 19/12/2023 16:58

I’ve put the glamourizer on my Xmas list (first thing DH said is that it looks like a sex toy) and will be eager to see if it gives me non Charles 1 waves.

Duh · 19/12/2023 18:47

@SinisterBumFacedCat I hope it works for you and you have fabulous hair for Christmas! 🤶

Freshair1 · 19/12/2023 22:00

Ok. So I can curl l, I figured it out after countless achy arm sessions. In front of a mirror, hold the straighteners upright in the air like a lighter. Then point it downwards over your scalp. Only then do you grab a piece, grip it and twist as you go DOWN the strands towards the bottom of your hair. Hope that makes sense. I spent years curling by pulling away from my face. You need to be pulling DOWN and twisting as you go. No hair gets caught as it literally runs through. Just make sure you alternate the twist directions or all the curls will go the same way.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 19/12/2023 23:12

I tried straighteners and one of the curler 'machines', both were hopeless for me. I bought some curling tongs and can do my hair in 10 minutes flat - it looks great and it lasts all day.
