Anyone ditched getting nails done?

Thought about stopping the manicures.
Love nice nails but don't particularly like getting them done.

I have never had a mani, but could never give my pedis up.

Upwiththelark76 · 30/11/2023 22:41

Me! i just can’t justify the cost ! ive tried to them myself for special occasions-fails every time.when money is tight though I just can’t justify the cost of going to salon

NorthernGirlie · 30/11/2023 22:43

Me - I bought a gel kit from amazon and do my own now!

jackstini · 30/11/2023 22:44

Done my own gel nails for the last 11 years!

eyeofthehurricane · 30/11/2023 22:45

Maybe try getting them done at the beauty department of a college.

Cheaper! Just a thought. Plus if there is a particular part of the mani you dislike, they could leave it out/do it differently, like a salon would.

Derb · 30/11/2023 22:45

I bought a gel kit years ago and I do my own now. I couldn't justify the expense or the time to actually get them done in a salon now.

LylaLee · 30/11/2023 22:46

I've been converted to nail wraps. Literally stickers. £2. Looks like a professional manicure.

GreatGateauxsby · 30/11/2023 22:47

I bought a kit recently as I can’t be doing with the inconvenience of going. It’s yet to be road tested so we will see….

pedis last for ages so I can’t see myself giving that up in a rush…

I use the stickers for pedis too.

When I tried to do my own gel nails they looked awful.

At least the lamp wasn't a total waste as I can use it for the semi cured strips.

Ineedwinenow · 30/11/2023 22:55

Yeah me, I stopped like everyone else during Covid and never bothered afterwards, my beautician put nail infills up to £38 and toes to £45 and as I went every three weeks for nails and six weeks for toes too, I just couldn’t justify it anymore plus I always felt like I was wasting time as it was always a 2.5 hour trip (3.5 if toes were included) due to travel time too and there’s so many other thing I needed to do. I do miss my toes being done but not my nails weirdly

I have heard of a normal nail varnish that goes on like a gel but doesn’t need setting with a lamp, if anyone has experience of that I’d be really interested

PatronLover · 30/11/2023 23:01

I just couldn't. Have a Pedi every eight weeks and a Mani every six at a push. It will cost less if you don't need to go so often. Also, I have dipping polish on natural nails, no extensions, no chrome, and no nail art to keep the cost reasonable.

BlueGrey1 · 30/11/2023 23:22

Would only get one for a special ocassion,
I like the look of very short clean nails, was doing them myself at home but as I wear retinol cream at night on my face it was destroying them so I stopped doing them, no point

Floralovesflowers · 01/12/2023 07:43

Yes, sort of.......

I've cut back massively and tend to only get a professional mani/pedi before I go on holiday or other special occasion; I've probably had about 4 this year. I'm having a manicure today as have lots of Xmas socialising coming up and will book a pedicure in January to give the hooves a good going over!

I bought a gel kit during lockdown so do my own in between and have more time nowadays to do my feet but don't do as good a job as my beautician.

Pancakeorcrepe · 01/12/2023 07:49

Yes I stopped getting them done to save money and got used to the natural look now. Didn’t even get them done for holidays and won’t for Christmas.

mrsjg · 01/12/2023 08:08

I like the sound of the nail wraps too.

So I got my nails done Mon last week, acrylic infils. Bloody paints chipped off my thumb. So I look scruffy & not ready for infil!! Now I've gotta take myself off to the salon just to get 1 nail fixed.
Can't paint it myself as I don't have the colour.

@LylaLee Thank you so much for taking the time to post the link for us. They look really good!

AgathaX · 01/12/2023 11:17

I bought a kit and did my own from the start of covid, and was quite happy doing that. However, the health risk warnings earlier this year really put me off continuing so I haven't had anything on my nails since around April. They were in bad condition at first but are really strong now. I don't miss the gels, although I'd like just sometimes to have some colour on them but I chip regular polish within hours so don't like using it.

The nail wraps look great. Thanks for the link above.

Purpleavocado · 01/12/2023 11:28

what are you getting the acrylic painted with? Gel or normal polish? Gel lasts a lot better if I get acrylics.

Thanks. They perform exactly like a gel polish, except it takes 5 minutes to do instead of driving into town/faffing around doing it yourself. And it costs £4 instead of £35 each time.

App13 · 01/12/2023 12:54

Me, I dont have the time and am trying to be money careful.

Though I do occasionally do a shape and paint £10

And have some stick ons for special occasions

strawberryblondebint · 01/12/2023 17:39

Love a nail wrap. These aren't gel just Amazon cheapies. Clear nail varnish over the top. Love a quick dry one.

A vote for stickers here! I use Glaize. They are easy to use, cheaper than a manicure and more eco-friendly than gels. I've never had manicures because I don't have time but I just do these myself in the evening in 10mins and they last 2 weeks.
