Laugh out loud clothing

IdealisticCynic · 10/11/2023 11:29

I have a pretty much live and let live attitude to clothing. Generally if I see something a bit out there, I just shrug and think good on whoever wants that.

But occasionally I see something that seems so ridiculous, that it makes me laugh out loud. Today’s item: https://www.jigsaw-online.com/collections/dresses/products/roksanda-fringed-knitted-dress-berry?_gl=1agmcle_up*MQ..&gclid=CjwKCAiAxreqBhAxEiwAfGfndMTIbNfmdWln5jIxItMrxST14Bz2p9ljJcfTjpHZdMON3NVzZH9l3hoCiMEQAvD_BwE

How is it sold out??

Would love to see if anyone else has this reaction to some items and would particularly love to see screenshots/ links to them. Very much need a bit of cheering up/distraction today.

@GoodnightGentlemen I think your mum is my new hero. I love it! What a fabulous attitude.

Itsnamechange · 12/11/2023 02:05

Half of these outfits I'd expect to see suggested on a normal S&B thread where poor unsuspecting op asks for an outfit to help her feel sexy on a Christmas night out.

Jacopo · 12/11/2023 07:23

That’s a carrier pigeon. Plenty of room for messages.

Purplecatshopaholic · 12/11/2023 07:45

I love these threads! Good taste in clothing, as most other things, is so subjective. I’d wear quite a few of the pieces on here (that cape would be awesome for my wedding for one). Wear what you like, walk tall and own it is my motto.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 12/11/2023 09:04

That's the thing @DerekFaker I don't think the model does look dreadful, though I would say that the clothes will look much better in the flesh as the quality of the fabric will show and they will move beautifully. All the clothes (many worn by this model) on the website this season are styled in this particular way. I would wear an approximation of the look (not the actual clothes as I cannot absorb those prices and not pale blue head to tow) but for example I would wear either the coat or the skirt, with another item. The interesting thing about this thread is that, save for the skin tight, hugely revealing items, I would wear (or would have once) many of the things listed as totally beyond the pale. And I do not consider myself particularly "out there" clothes wise. Its great but wholly unsurprising that taste is so broad.

MerryChristmasToYou · 12/11/2023 10:13

@Jacopo , you'd not get many messages in it!

Grin Are you Scottish Jacopo? That made me envision the pigeon full of tiny packets of cereal, tins of beans etc.

GoodnightGentlemen · 12/11/2023 10:26

my son thinks these are brilliant. He is only 9 though.

Total hysterectomy is the womb and cervix as far as I can gather so the poster's DM didn't get her ovaries out at the same time (radical hysterectomy) and presumably wasn't plunged into menopause overnight.

I'm not sure mad clothing will make me feel better about looking like a baked potato :)

I may have used the wrong term… she definitely did go into menopause and hrt and all that after the operation.

But- she is 5 foot nothing, allergic to exercise, totally bonkers in terms of her diet and drinking is part of her creative process… I’m sure a more sensible woman would be able to avoid baked potatoness if they wanted to!

Good post. The model doesn't look dreadful and you're absolutely right about the way the fabric will move.

Some posters take that type of styling so literally - it's not intended to suggest that you wear it all together but to show what's available.

It's not "laugh out loud" clothing. The notion that Raey, Egg and Roksanda and Jigsaw's collaboration with Roksanda is "laugh out loud" just means posters are so conservative that nothing outside their boundaries can ever be considered.

Sometimes we run out of ‘sensibleness.’

i thought I was going to be a very fit old woman. I was a swimmer and hiker all my life, until I hit my mid 50s and developed a lifelong disabling illness so I struggled to keep fit - I’ve pretty much thrown in the towel now. Then I developed a thyroid problem which necessitated RAI which effectively kills the thyroid; and it’s been a down hill battle weight wise ever since.

Unfortunately, even with the best of intentions things don’t work out as we planned and we can lose control, or some degree of it, over our bodies.

@GoodnightGentlemen your mother sounds wonderful. A fashion maverick. A stuffed bird on a hat with a veil!

For sure! I used to be super fit and healthy before I became disabled… also, let’s face it- sensible can be rather dull!

😀 true. Though I don't think S & B was always like that to be fair or at least not so extreme.

This 'laugh out loud' thread took a turn very early on too, as predicted.

Ha ha you seem to be taking this rather personally.

We don't like dreadful clothes because we're just so conservative and uneducated, and if only we could see them glimmering and wafting in the twilight we'd see the error of our stupid, boring ways.

Seriously, get over yourselves.

And yes, that model IMO looks fucking dreadful.

Anyway, please enjoy these looooovley coats from Nina Ricci, which I have christened 'Hunchback chic'.

I love laughing at some of my old outfits. It's one of my favourite things.

The thing is, I had no idea at the time that they were laugh out loud. I thought I looked nice, and normal.

So just a warning to anyone who thinks they can escape future ridicule. You can't. It doesn't matter what you wear, children and grandchildren will look at the photos and they will point and laugh at you.

Personally I think you may as well enjoy the ride and have some fun.

CharlotteRumpling · 12/11/2023 11:56

But it's Nina Ricci @DerekFaker so we must all genuflect before Quasimodo or be scolded for being conservative.

If that were sold by New Look or Primark, we would be allowed to call it hideous.

It's mostly very Emperor's New Clothes to me, but what do I know? I am practically a Tory!

No, it's not laugh out loud clothing. That blue outfit from Egg is awful like you've given up on life. Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean their taste is limited.

It's Lacroix sweetie

PassageDEnfer · 12/11/2023 15:49

It's the same wth art and perfume. Some people just don't seem to be able to comprehend that just because it is not what they like, it is not necessarily awful or rubbish of whatever. There is a difference between personal taste and design integrity/merit.

CharlotteRumpling · 12/11/2023 15:53

Absolutely nothing wrong with liking Egg or Roksanda or Raey or anything.

It's the tone this started out with - light hearted I thought-and how it ended: taking things very personally and lecturing everyone on the thread about how taste differs. Yes, we have figured that out.

I actually kind of admire that, despite acknowledging that I would look like a Weeble in it.
