Is this dress suitable for a wedding?

My DP and I are going to the wedding of a friend of his later this month. We don't know him and his fiancé terribly well although we've had dinner together a few times. Meaning we won't be in the wedding party pictures or any pictures at all, possibly.

I feel the cold so I don't want to wear a sleeveless dress or anything too 'summery looking' or cotton. Would this dress, with high-heeled long boots work? I'd wear a nice camel coat on top. Thoughts? Is it not formal enough? I'm not sure what the wedding venue is but the whole day is taking place in the same venue so not church then reception venue. Any feedback, please? Thanks.

It doesn't look very weddingy to me. Could you look for something similar in velvet perhaps?

VeridicalVagabond · 06/11/2023 12:28

I'd wear that for work, and my office is pretty casual. I don't think it's very weddingy but it depends very much on the vibe of the wedding!

TheHorneSection · 06/11/2023 12:32

I think that would be fine if you put a really big bold necklace with it?

SomethingMustBeScaringThemAway · 06/11/2023 12:32

No, there’s absolutely nothing festive about it. Not even a diamond as big as the Ritz could take that dress to a wedding.

Can you afford to buy something more suitable?

ShirleyPhallus · 06/11/2023 12:33

Absolutely not!

NorthernSpirit · 06/11/2023 12:51

No, it’s too plain. Looks like something I’d wear everyday.

Celebrationsnakes · 06/11/2023 12:52

It's a dress I'd wear to the office not a celebration dress

SpringMeadows · 06/11/2023 13:05

OK. So it's a no. What would you guys recommend, please? Any links, please? A PP suggested velvet but I really don't like velvet. And it has to be warm-ish. Something I can wear tights under. I can do skyscraper heels if that makes a difference. Although I'd rather it were boots than shoes. And it must have sleeves. Any suggestions please? Budget-wise I'd rather not spend tons but if it's something I can get enough wear out of, I'm happy to go to £300. Please no 'sack-like' stuff. I am a size ten, hourglass, and I prefer fitted styles. And I can dress something up with jewellery. Sorry - I know I'm being picky :-)

I think it's a lovely dress! Hair, make up and heels to make it weddingy.

waistchallenge · 06/11/2023 13:20

I've just bought a really nice satin midi skirt from a charity shop, that emphasizes the waist and hips. I am going to wear it with opaque thermal tights underneath! And a silk camisole with lace along the neckline, and a wollen on top (real silk which is warming plus you could go for something like cashmere for the cardigan/jumper).

LittleMooli · 06/11/2023 13:22

It's lovely. Get a nice statement necklace and do your hair. Ignore all the "wedding guest" dresses suggested in shops they are often polyester nightmares that scream help I need a wedding dress. Your dress oozes style.

HermioneWeasley · 06/11/2023 13:22

Weddings don’t have to mean a pattern.

to make it dressier I would wear with heels rather than boots and a big statement necklace and a dressy bag. Add a fabulous blow out and I think that will work

Velvet looks cheap even when it isn't

waistchallenge · 06/11/2023 13:24

For me I love the original dress but I think it's the very dark colour that's actually not very wedding-y. Could you get it in another colour?

Megifer · 06/11/2023 13:31

Op its absolutely fine for a normal real life wedding. You can take any dress like that and dress it up with jewellery, hair, makeup and bag.

You can get comfort and glam with that dress and have it to dress down afterwards so it's not sat in your wardrobe.... What's not to like about that 😊

This is what I came on to say- does it come in a brighter colour. The dress itself is a gorgeous cut. And with a nice necklace it could totally work

Megifer · 06/11/2023 13:36

Wheres it from op I've got a few posh do's coming up....the more I look at it the classier it gets.

I've got a giant pair of peacock sparkly earrings and a peacock bag that would look soooo nice with that 😍

Weatherwax · 06/11/2023 13:36

Same as many others, I love this dress and its all about your accessories. Nice heels not boots, fancy up do if you can, great earrings and you've got a wedding outfit.

In fact I like this dress so much can you tell us where its from?!

SpringMeadows · 06/11/2023 13:39

Thank you, all. This dress only comes in green and chocolate brown. No other colours.

@CultureAlienationBoredomandDespair I'm not terribly keen on that dress. I think it'd look like a dressing gown on me... but I appreciate you sending the link.

@waistchallenge The issue with cardigans is that they don't look very 'formal' or elegant IMO. So I'd rather wear something warm that doesn't need something on top (apart from a coat when we're getting there and back)

@Laurdo Not keen on shrugs and without one I'd freeze ;-)

Apologies again for being difficult. But it's going to be a long day and the last thing I want is to be freezing. Would the dress I suggested look OK with high-heeled shoes? I've been wearing knee-high boots with dresses for such a long time (I wear HH shoes with trousers, mainly at work) that I'm not sure whether they are a thing anymore...

(Edited because I ranted at op for not saying where it was from)

Megifer · 06/11/2023 13:44

Thanks op I'm ordering it, its lovely 😃

It's fine for a wedding, for me its one of those dresses you can turn to any occasion with the right accessories and attitude!
