Is this dress suitable for a wedding?

My DP and I are going to the wedding of a friend of his later this month. We don't know him and his fiancé terribly well although we've had dinner together a few times. Meaning we won't be in the wedding party pictures or any pictures at all, possibly.

I feel the cold so I don't want to wear a sleeveless dress or anything too 'summery looking' or cotton. Would this dress, with high-heeled long boots work? I'd wear a nice camel coat on top. Thoughts? Is it not formal enough? I'm not sure what the wedding venue is but the whole day is taking place in the same venue so not church then reception venue. Any feedback, please? Thanks.

What about something like this OP which is also wool and long sleeved but a little dressier?

I think that would be fine if you put a really big bold necklace with it?

I agree... needs statement necklace xx

I have this exact dress. It is a lovely colour and flattering on but it is a knitted dress and extremely casual in styling. I wear it to work with long heeled boots but only on days when I have no important meetings. I’d never consider wearing it to a wedding even if Charles lent me some of the Crown Jewels to dress it up 😀

That’s interesting, I suspected that might be the case, but thought the op knew better as she had it. I’ve several knitted dresses, and to be honest, as much as I love them, none are suitable for a wedding.

@Katrinawaves gorgeous colour but I don't like the skirt part as it's a little too 'big' - But I appreciate the link!

@Laurdo I prefer fitted styles so the purple one is a big no for me. On the other hand I have half a dozen (or more) dresses from the Pretty Dress people. I have worn them this time of year (at work) before and was very cold though!

I’ve fallen in love with this knit dress from anthropology. I like your original choice too but if you’re still looking then this might be an option for you:

Op. I have the dress now and I love it, it’s very comfy and flattering.

I agree with the other poster who has it, it is not remotely suitable for a wedding, unless it’s a very casual one with a pub or equivalent type reception, even then it would be a push.

for anyone choosing to order , if you want it to fit like the model you need to size down.im a 12, sometimes a 14 in certain makes, and a 10 is very loosely skimming rather than fitted. And it doesn’t hold its shape great as no elastane, but doesn’t ‘grow” as such. It is however lovely and I will wear it a lot.

OP it’s a gorgeous dress, and if I looked like Cameron Diaz ( which I am assuming you do) I would happily wear it to a wedding. The dark green with bright red accessories would look very Christmassy so it would have a life post wedding.

I would be a sweaty mess if I wore a jumper dress to a wedding

how about a floaty kimono to add a layer of warmth and pattern to the outfit? https://onehundredstars.co.uk/products/midi-kimono-stork-forest?_pos=5&_sid=f9165620a&_ss=r

That wouldn’t work with the actual dress because it’s too fine - would be like draping a silk scarf over a beanie or balaclava!

It may not be obvious from the photo but in reality this is quite a heavy weight woollen dress. It’s definitely not a fine knit as some people are assuming.

I’m not really a knitter - haven’t done so since school but for those who are I’d say it’s a similar weight to maybe a 4ply wool knitted in rib stitch. It’s not as heavy as an Arran but certainly not a DK or lighter.

I like what you have but think the boots make it casual. A gold naked high sandal and clutch would look more weddingy

Quite a few similar options on Karen Millen

I would swap for this Karen Millen red maxi dress!! It's a similar price and so much more glamorous.

I like the original dress!

This one is quite similar but I prefer the colour for a wedding I think.

Agree with this too!

Nht14 · 12/11/2023 12:40

Agree with others, it's a lovely dress but think the colour isn't so wedding-ey. Not sure what colours you like but here are some ideas :)

Thrift also has good second hand clothes, especially if you know what kind of brands you prefer

I think it's a lovely dress OP and, with careful styling, you could absolutely wear it to a wedding. Better than many of the 'I'm going to a wedding' dresses that you see on here all the time too.

I was going to say I think it would be fine with the right styling and if it's fresh on - but it sounds as though you've already worn and washed it at least once and knits especially man-made fibres start to look past their best at that point.
Yes to a slip - I agree with PP that if you're not in a church, wedding venues in the winter are often roasting.

Styling differences that will make it work:
Hair done
Dressy Jewellery
Jacket - blazer or cropped Chanel cut brocade or satin or velvet or faux fur
Belt - thin gold
Appropriate shoes
