Coats, how many?

I keep looking at coats and jackets for the “right one”
To date I must have ordered and sent back after trying on at least 12 coats. I keep searching for the one that I think I need. I seem to be drowning in a sea of coats and I’m running out of space for them.

Here’s what I think I need
I walk the dog so I need a good warm waterproof coat, full length, with hood, and
a lightweight hooded waterproof full length
A waterproof hooded jacket, maybe?
An everyday stylish and casual but practical coat, eg for going to the pub, into town, going to activities with friends etc
A stylish smart jacket
A casual jacket or coat puffa?

This is what I have to date
A Seasalt plant hunter, a year old.
A Seasalt Janelle coat, new
A waxed cotton Parka coat from M &S, new
A longish hooded light waterproof jacket from Lighthouse
2 puffa coats hooded, lightweight
2 puffa jackets lightweight
2 old faded hooded not waterproof light jackets
A smart casual denim biker style jacket (it looks waxed but it’s a plastic coating)

What do you have and what do I need? Do I need another one or two ? Perhaps I can get rid of some of these coats or put them in storage

That’s crackers, I have a casual long warm coat, a smart long warm coat, a full length oversized waterproof coat, it’s thin so can be worn in summer or winter over layers ( for dog walking) and a waterproof jacket that folds up into a pocket. My DP says I have too many coats 🤣, I’d say you have way too many coats!

HappiDaze · 05/11/2023 15:01

I have at least 20 coats and jackets I've accumulated over the years for different seasons and situations and sizes

I haven't bought any the last couple of years because I have all need

HappiDaze · 05/11/2023 15:02

My DD is wearing one of my raincoats that's 30 years old that I re waterproofed

She does have her own coats

Maybe I'm a bit of a hoarder

HappiDaze · 05/11/2023 15:03

In my 20's I probably just had the one

I'm now in my 50's so they add up

HappiDaze · 05/11/2023 15:04

In my 20's I used umbrellas more as I lived in larger cities so coats were a pain when commuting

bluepencilstoo · 05/11/2023 15:05

@CeeceeBloomingdale sorryI hadn't seen that post

Yep, I must be a bit of a hoarder and I'm a bit obsessed with finding the right coat or mac etc

CeeceeBloomingdale · 05/11/2023 15:07

No need to apologise, just thought it might be interesting to you. I have bought another since that thread!

TizerorFizz · 05/11/2023 15:15

I have several cupboards of coats. Burberry, Barbour, Max Mara etc. All have their uses. Plus tweed coats, puffa coats, parkas, leather, hiking jackets and wax coats. Just added a plain grey wool coat to go with grey trousers and grey cashmere top. Winter coats in wool and many colours are a joy. You never have too many! The dog never noticed what coat I wore! A good Barbour goes far!

TheOGCCL · 05/11/2023 15:25

I mean that sounds like more than enough coats to me but then I just don't have the storage.

Trinny is doing coats this week on Closet Confessions

bluepencilstoo · 05/11/2023 16:57

Oh and I forgot to include about 3 fleeces.
I blame it on my poor childhood, sob 😭

LadyEloise1 · 05/11/2023 18:46

@HippeePrincess what brand is the full length oversized light waterproof coat please ?

DreamingInPhosphorescence · 05/11/2023 18:59

I have far too many:
Eleventy-billion fleeces
Seasalt long waterproof, no idea which one. Always has been uncomfortable and now too small. Still keeping it out of guilt at the price.
Zara belted raincoat, love it but again too small
Next version of the Zara one that actually fits but isn’t as nice.
Boden long wool coat. Great if it isn’t raining…
Long puffa coat for sidelines of sports pitches. Too hot for anything involving actual walking.
Long black velvet coat, gorgeous but utterly impractical.
Various vile pack-a-mac type things for dire emergencies.

Humphriescushion · 05/11/2023 19:10

I have quite a few as well but am in my 50’s so have had some for a long time. I got rid of a jigsaw long raincoat with a fur collar a few years ago and have regretted it ever since.
have a wool spotted boden one ( old)
blue velvet boden one
pink boden jacket double breasted can’t think of name of it
parka type one
fake fur one
cape
velvet jacket
wool wrap type one
boden rain coat with pink lining
last years was a black inside out one, fur one side waterproof other - currently love this one so cosy.
there are more.

LadyEloise1 · 05/11/2023 19:53

@Humphriescushion the fur lined waterproof coat sounds great- what brand please ?

Humphriescushion · 05/11/2023 20:11

is a rare one not from boden but bought it in France sorry @LadyEloise1 was jacquline rui ( approx). Not sure if they are in the uk.

https://www.riuparis.fr/fr-fr/ can’t see it in this years collection but difficult to see clearly. I

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/11/2023 20:21

I have -

A denim jacket
A light rain jacket
A smart grey wool jacket
A smart turquoise velvet coat

IDontHateRainbows · 05/11/2023 20:26

I love a good coat.

I have a Hobbs mac which gets too thin to wear around now.
A smart wool pea coat
A belted wool 3/4 length double breasted coat
A Joe browns single breasted jacquard coat
A wool coat with unusual trim from years ago
A padded synthetic jacket for things like walking.

And I'm still looking for another one, a smart wool jacket/ short coat.

fernsandlilies · 05/11/2023 20:33

I have definitely too many coats, but they all do have specific purposes. I keep my work clothes completely separate from casual, and I also have more 'technical' coats for hiking and dog walking. (they are longer for dog walking as we go more slowly and get more muddy than when hiking and scrambling, when shorter coats are better).

I live in the south of the UK, and find I don't need a long padded parka style coat at all, just waterproofs. I have two from Didriksons of different lengths and a short hip length jacket from Patagonia. I also have a smart raincoat from Protected Species for work.

OP, It sounds to me as though you need a proper waterproof, and perhaps you don't need all the puffas.

When do you reach for the M&S Parka, as opposed to the 2 very similar Seasalt coats?

What's wrong with your Lighthouse jacket, is it not doing something that you need it to do?

yutu · 05/11/2023 20:34

I have

5 short duck down coats
1 midi duck down coat
6 long duck down coats
2 short wool coats
8 midi wool coats
4 long wool coats
1 leather jacket
2 short water proof jackets

fernsandlilies · 05/11/2023 20:36

that's a lot of duck down! must be super cosy

in what way are they different from each other?

rickyrickygrimes · 05/11/2023 20:39

4 in total

1 charcoal grey winter coat that’s warm / waterproof, smart enough for work
1 blue spring waterproof, ditto
1 light beige trenchcoat (not waterproof)
1 tan cord jacket for ‘out’

that’s it. I do live in France so it’s warm enough not to need a coat for at least half the year.

mondaytosunday · 05/11/2023 20:54

Uh I have one 'shower resistant' lightweight thing. A mid length puffer thing that I didn't wear at all last year, and a hooded cape thing. I might get a long more formal wool coat but only because I like the look, but I don't 'need' it. Where do you store all of yours? Sounds like you don't need any more.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 05/11/2023 20:59

6 coats to cover 4 seasons.

Denim jacket
Leather jacket
Sporty jacket for walking to the gym
Parka
Long down coat
Smart wool coat.
