Coats, how many?

I keep looking at coats and jackets for the “right one”
To date I must have ordered and sent back after trying on at least 12 coats. I keep searching for the one that I think I need. I seem to be drowning in a sea of coats and I’m running out of space for them.

Here’s what I think I need
I walk the dog so I need a good warm waterproof coat, full length, with hood, and
a lightweight hooded waterproof full length
A waterproof hooded jacket, maybe?
An everyday stylish and casual but practical coat, eg for going to the pub, into town, going to activities with friends etc
A stylish smart jacket
A casual jacket or coat puffa?

This is what I have to date
A Seasalt plant hunter, a year old.
A Seasalt Janelle coat, new
A waxed cotton Parka coat from M &S, new
A longish hooded light waterproof jacket from Lighthouse
2 puffa coats hooded, lightweight
2 puffa jackets lightweight
2 old faded hooded not waterproof light jackets
A smart casual denim biker style jacket (it looks waxed but it’s a plastic coating)

What do you have and what do I need? Do I need another one or two ? Perhaps I can get rid of some of these coats or put them in storage

Oh god I have way too many too:

  • smart wool one for work/town
  • Protected Species parka for dog walking
  • old Skogstad that's lost its waterproofing
  • v light running waterproof
  • sheepskin coat
  • 3 x ultra light downs
  • leather jacket

I could happily buy 4 or 5 more, luckily I've got no money!

I have a formal wool 3/4 length coat, a knee length trench coat, waterproof jackets in varying conditions, a knee length puffer jacket and some fleeces/soft shells that zip into aforementioned waterproof jackets.

Hi @fernsandlilies the lighthouse coat is fine but I've worn it in this weeks rain and it's not as waterproof as I hoped it would be. It's seems slightly skimpy in that there's quite a lot of loose threads unfinished threads on the seams and the zip kept riding down. Little things. it's probably the wrong weather for it

I thought about the Seasalt and the M n S coat being similar and thought about taking one of them back but I will wear - sometime

I might get a decent lightweight raincoat that I can wear a hoodie or light fleece under. I haven't seen one I like yet though - maybe a Seasalt one Any suggestions anyone?

I have lots of different coats, at least 20, they mostly hang in the box room on pegs on the wall with the most used ones downstairs in the hall, a couple of best ones are in the wardrobe. I have just done the Autumn swap around to my cold weather coats this last week. I have several Seasalt ones, generally bought in the Next sale, I more likely to wear something waterproof as there is generally a chance of rain. I did find myself looking on JL at coats today

SpaceRaiders · 05/11/2023 21:20

I have:
a knee length duck down
an ankle length duck down
a knee length wool coat in black
a knee length wool coat in navy
a knee length cashmere coat in camel
a neutral wool car coat
a camel trench
a navy trench
3 other lululemon sports west type jackets and some thin summer jackets. I’m on the look out for a smart grey long cashmere coat but I’ll probably wait for the Christmas sales. I also need a long waterproof rain coat with a hood but I haven’t found one that is both stylish and practical.

fernsandlilies · 05/11/2023 20:36

that's a lot of duck down! must be super cosy

in what way are they different from each other?

Mostly different colours and length to match with different dresses under. A couple of them are much thicker for colder days and others for slightly mild days.

HaplessRhombus · 06/11/2023 00:45

I have two coats. One warm and waterproof one for long walks and one smart/casual one for when I'll only be outside a short while.

Gowlett · 06/11/2023 00:46

I have sooo many coats. And I still mourn my coats of yore…
Life was simpler when I had less coats… But I love them all.

IAmtheVampiresWife · 06/11/2023 04:44

@bluepencilstoo don't put any in storage. You will never wear them again.

Weepingwillows12 · 06/11/2023 04:50

I reckon you need minimum 3;

  • a summer anorak for rain
  • a casual warm waterproof winter coat
  • a smart coat for work/ funerals in winter

I would also like something slightly smarter for seeing friends and autumn spring weather like a trench coat but I have failed to find one I like.

Hobby do really good trench costs, I love mine.

I hope you don't have too many funerals to go to!

bluepencilstoo · 06/11/2023 19:09

Didriksons is the only way to go. Their stuff is amazing and will keep you 100% dry.

LadyEloise1 · 06/11/2023 19:16

I so want the Ilse Jacobsen Rain71 in "Frosting" but sadly they don't have my size in it. Sad

bluepencilstoo · 06/11/2023 19:27

@Suasthuasanuas I'm very tempted by Didrikson coats but I want to see them in a shop as I can't work out the fit or feel of them What would I do with my other coats ???😀

Suasthuasanuas · 06/11/2023 19:31

@bluepencilstoo I hear you. I hummed and hawed for ages as I wasn't sure about size, but eventually found a shop that stocked them and went for a cheeky try in before I bought online. Quite generous fit so I sized down. Incredibly waterproof and stylish. Your other coats might gang up on it 😂

fruitpastille · 06/11/2023 20:36

I tried a didriksons in Cotswolds outdoor shop. I wanted to love it but the shape wasn't quite right. I ended up buying their own brand ayacucho parka (much cheaper!) which is warm without too much bulk and waterproof. On offer at mo. It looks better on than in the photoWaterproof and warm

fruitpastille · 06/11/2023 20:43

I have 1x warm and waterproof and long
2 x padded long (one old and worn out, one newer but a bit too big bought in sale stupidly)
1 x padded short
Denim jacket
Plaid shacket
Biker jacket
2 × gilets (one with hood, one without)
I've lost and need to replace light waterproof
I also need a smart coat
DH thinks I have too many coats.
