Christmas wedding guest dress. No idea what to wear

Am going to a wedding Christmas week. Not been to a non spring/summer wedding before so i have no idea what sort of dress to wear. Sparkles or just a smart dress in winter colours? Can anyone guide me towards something suitable please?

Clothing size, budget, venue?

Where do you usually shop?

Limitations - tall / petite / particular colours / proportions / superstitions / etc ?

I'm going to a wedding on 28 December and I think I'll be wearing a blue velvet dress. It feels glam and festive without being too "Christmassy".

emilyofnewmoon · 04/11/2023 21:40

Sorry, I forgot the important stuff. I'm 5'4 8/10 brunette. Budget is around £150 but ideally lower but could go higher for something perfect.
Venue is a wedding venue type place , think it's a Christmas theme.

I was at a wedding on the 22nd a few years ago and all the women were in long party dresses, more like black tie night out. Loads of sparkles

Don’t really know the level of formality you’re thinking of. Obviously velvet would be great; you’d probably find you hate the sight of anything sequinned once the festive season is over. Something vaguely metallic?

This is an amazing dress:

This is less than your budget limit - you could maybe use the rest for a suitable accessory.

This is actually Christmas in a dress:

Neither would be unsuitable, but neither feels quite now. They both seem a few years out of date - like something you’d forgotten you owned, but have just rediscovered in your wardrobe.

Some great choices thank you but none of them feel like me. What about this? Would it be suitable?

I think this lovely and entirely suitable for a winter / Christmas wedding.

IMO and as someone who had a Christmas wedding. It’s a great opportunity for something a bit more glam than the usual wedding guest attire (I actively encouraged it) but also you want to feel like you so if you prefer to wear a more winter version of your typical guest attire (which I’d say this fits the bill) then do that.

I went to one a few years ago. I wore a long green dress that had diamonds on the torso from Dorothy Perkins. I borrowed a faux fur jacket from someone and it was perfect.

Rainbowshit · 05/11/2023 07:58

I'm wearing this to a winter wedding.

@emilyofnewmoon I think they are both suitable and elegant.

Quitelikeacatslife · 05/11/2023 08:56

You don't need to dress too warm just wear a nice coat or wrap to arrive , as inside venue will be warm. I think as long as has sleeves and not light coloured or floral for winter wedding . I'd think jewel colours

Imreallytiredandanxioustoday · 05/11/2023 08:57

This is lovely

PaperBlinds · 05/11/2023 09:00

@emilyofnewmoon both the dresses you have posted are lovely! With a blingy clutch and heels or even heeled boots you will look fabulous!

Not my idea of Christmas or wedding, I would wear it for work.

Doggymummar · 05/11/2023 10:22

The second mint velvet one is lush.

BirthdayQuestions · 05/11/2023 10:26

I've been to a few winter/Christmas weddings and I don't really remember anything being different in what the guests wore. At lot of it takes place inside anyway.

McP13 · 05/11/2023 12:56

Both of your choices are stunning and would be lovely for a wedding..

I like both of those. I think I prefer the Karen Millen as a dress for an occasion as it's bolder, but the Joanna Hope is pretty, might be a bit too lightweight for winter?
