Teenage dd wants to wear a suit for prom

xsquared · 02/11/2023 18:39

Dd is adamant that she doesn't want to wear a dress but a two piece with trousers or a suit of some kind.

I've looked at old threads for inspiration, but she's not really after a tux or dinner jacket type suit.

What are the alternatives please, if you've ever had a dd like this?

Thank you.

Surely this for her to research and choose?

TheChosenTwo · 02/11/2023 20:24

My dd wanted to wear a suit to prom and went for an emerald green one very similar in style to the maniere devoir one posted above. It really suited (haha!) her personality and style. She looked beautiful and striking.

LadyHag · 02/11/2023 20:24

My dd did this - velvet tux jacket and plain black tux trousers and black shirt. Plus wore my pointed dr marten chelsea boots.

Trousers ad shirt from vinted,

We got dark red velvet tx in sale from mens section at ben sherman - look on ebay or vinted, should get a bargain

It is becoming popular to go suited and bootec

@Icefoot

Yes, but it would also help her if her parents showed interest and clued up of where and how much to spend.

These are all great ideas, thank you.

I shall share these with dd, and let her do further window shopping until she finds the outfit.

Try ASOS, they have loads of unusual ones.

Separates can look amazing on a young woman, and much less boring than the typical prom dress.

Waistcoat, worn as a top (done up, obviously!) and big skirt?

Nellynoo182 · 02/11/2023 21:29

She should have a look on Pinterest - lots of good female suit inspo on there to help her decide what she would like. Sometimes the pics are linked to the shops too.

Proms so far away I'd just put some cash aside if you already have it and wait til May tbh

UnctuousUnicorns · 02/11/2023 22:34

I did similar at my Leaver's Ball (all girls school) 36 years ago. I wore a white shirt with white tie, black braces with black trousers and black brogues, plus black jacket. At the time, I had a short back and sides with typically floppy 80s fringe with side parting. I am small (I was 5'1" then), and petite, so didn't look remotely "butch" or "mannish".

Good luck to your daughter; I'm sure she'll look fabulous whatever she chooses. 🙂

AugustRose · 02/11/2023 22:49

Neither of my daughters wanted a prom dress. DD1 (21) wore a standard black 3 piece suit. DD2 (16) wore a bright green trouser suit with a cropped jacket similar to the black one at the top of the thread - she had bright pink hair and looked amazing. I'm sure whatever your DD chooses she'll look great, I love teens being less conventional.

If it's not until July I'd hold fire until all the Christmas stuff goes into sale and then just have a day trying things on in your nearest town. You get all sort of velvet, jacquard, print suits for Christmas party clothes. Very in just now is a close-fitting waistcoat with flared, loose trousers - that would look great for a prom.

LlynTegid · 03/11/2023 08:06

An alternative would be not to go, and not to have low or single use clothing. I assume your DD has some care for the environment.

gotomomo · 03/11/2023 08:19

Look at pictures from the canine film festival, quite a few older ladies chose silk suits, looked amazing and more comfortable than dresses

KissTheRains · 03/11/2023 08:27

You could also have a Google to see if there are any bridal / wedding type charity shop places near you. Take a trip and and have a look through the suits to see if you get a decent quality one for cheap. Take it to a seamstress for alterations to get a more tailored 'Annie Lennox' look. Just an idea.

It doesn't have to be low or single use clothing. She could buy from Vinted, or indeed sell it on Vinted after she's worn it. If she's going to University she might well wear a ballgown regularly over the next few years and get good use of it.

It seems extreme to stop a 16yo going on an evening out to celebrate the end of school because of environmental concerns, it's not necessary to live a joyless life.

A glam trouser suit will probably be more rewearable than a red carpet style dress, you can wear it to gigs, normal parties, weddings etc. So it's an inherently more sustainable option.

Hiring an outfit or buying second hand and reselling would be a reasonable green option: not going to the event at all on the grounds that it might require buying an outfit would be bonkers.

Bet you are fun at parties

I was she! They do exist

Or maybe wear the outfit again, sell on, give to a charity shop.

Always one miserable pessimist trying to make everyone else miserable!
