Teenage dd wants to wear a suit for prom

xsquared · 02/11/2023 18:39

Dd is adamant that she doesn't want to wear a dress but a two piece with trousers or a suit of some kind.

I've looked at old threads for inspiration, but she's not really after a tux or dinner jacket type suit.

What are the alternatives please, if you've ever had a dd like this?

Thank you.

Rockabilly suit...i.e teddy boy fashion. Great look.

IncompleteSenten · 02/11/2023 18:47

Ask her to send you links to the sort of suit she's got in mind.

Bianca Jagger style white/cream trousers and jacket?

DuesToTheDirt · 02/11/2023 18:48

A friend's DD wore a 70s-flares kind of trouser suit. She looked fab.

ditalini · 02/11/2023 18:50

Friend's dd wore something like this: www.marksandspencer.com/tailored-sequin-single-breasted-blazer/p/clp60625638

She looked amazing.

When DS was deciding what to wear he found it really helpful to look at the photos from the previous years’ prom.
There were several girls in different style suits, but some wore (I’m sorry I’m not fashionable and don’t know the words!) sleeveless jumpsuits? Like all in one things with straps and a little jacket. They all looked lovely.

Rayna37 · 02/11/2023 18:52

The shops have had loads of suits in strong colours in recent years- Zara and French Connection both spring to mind. I think Steph McGovern wears a lot of this type of thing if you want to Google for inspiration.

Hopefully your DD can offer suggestions though and hasn't just got an abstract concept without actually seeing any?!

PragmaticWench · 02/11/2023 18:54

There are suits with shorts and jackets as well, depending if she wants to show her legs.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 02/11/2023 19:02

I’d be going straight to Vinted and Depop for Vivienne Westwood (or suits inspired by)!

Thank you for your replies and suggestions.

The only thing she's given me is that she wants to wear a blazer that is patterned rather than plain, and has shown me a photo of a jacquard one. I'll try and find a link to the sort of thing she's talking about.

The sequin suit from M&S already mentioned comes in blue, silver and black - maybe a mix and match suit, rather than matching items.

Ponderingwindow · 02/11/2023 20:12

Once of my DD’s friends rocked a brocade suit. It was thrifted and the brocades didn’t match, but you could tell that it worked perfectly for this particular teenager.

@xsquared
Is it a feminine look she's going for?

ShowOfHands · 02/11/2023 20:17

My DD went to charity shops and found a perfect jacquard suit. She has several now, all from charity shops and she wears them to sixth form.

SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 02/11/2023 20:19

When is the prom?

xsquared · 02/11/2023 20:19

That jacket is gorgeous @OhBeAFineGuyKissMe , and reminds.me very much of the Sargeant Pepper outfits.
Tangent: Love your name, as it reminds me of the alternative that a class mate thought of: Oh Bollocks A Fucking Git Kicked Me.

DH also suggested waiting a bit as dd may change her mind, but I'd like to be ready with ideas amd where to buy, just in case. One of her friends has already bought and shown dd her dress, so I guess she feels under pressure to get something soon.

@xsquared

She is feminine, but she just doesn't like dresses.

She is open to wearing a two piece, with a skirt bottom amd a tailored top half.
