Is there any way I can get away with this frou frou skirt?

I’ve had this skirt for years and never dared wear it. I’m 40s and a size 12, is there anything that I could pair it with that will mean I could get away with it for a Christmas party? It’s a lot of leg for me which aren’t my best feature, I’d love to go black opaques and plain turtle neck but because it’s so summery I don’t think black will work. I’d also love to wear a blazer with it but again with the style I don’t think it would look right. Any help would be appreciated other wise it might be time to charity shop it, maybe it’s just too fussy in style for me.

It looks like a beach cover up? I guess you could wear it with a black top/polo neck and boots but it would look odd. More a summer hols abroad skirt I think.

HardcoreLadyType · 01/11/2023 15:06

It’s lovely, but it is fairly summery. I wouldn’t really think you could
wear it with tights or a blazer.

If you never wear it, could
you sell it on Vinted? I’m sure there would be someone out there who would both like it, and want to wear it (as opposed to just liking it, iyswim).

LovelyBitOfSquirrrel · 01/11/2023 15:06

I don’t think it could be made to work for a Christmas party atall, the print is far too summery

PosyPrettyToes · 01/11/2023 15:07

Unless your work party is a Hawaiian luau, no.

AcceptingTherapy · 01/11/2023 15:07

At least everyone is in agreement! It’s one of those things I bought on a whim thinking I’m a different person!

All other things aside, OP, you just don't seem very convinced. You talk about the skirt being too summery, too much leg, too fussy, not quite looking right

I don't think you'll ever feel truly happy and comfortable in it. At a Christmas party, that's not what you want - you want to feel festive and lovely and comfortable and appropriate. I don't' think you'll ever feel that no matter what combination of tops, blazers, jackets, tights, shoes you try with it.

CheapHouse · 01/11/2023 15:10

I'm clutching at straws but could you wear it with black tights and a black high neck top and black boots. Or with brown but everything would have to be brown to go with it.

coldcallerbaiter · 01/11/2023 15:12

I like it, but only in summer with a little plain top/vest and sandals.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 01/11/2023 15:14

What complicated feelings have driven you to bring out a beach holiday skirt for Winter? I’m pretty sure you know it would be wholly unsuitable for a Christmas gathering, unless some sort of fancy dress.

Put it in a storage box and give it away to someone grateful next Spring …

SM4713 · 01/11/2023 15:14

Unless its a themed dress up, I'd keep it for a summer party. I have the perfect hat though!

If you tell us your style/colours etc we might be able to find something better.

It’s honestly not a beach cover up, but of course I agree it’s summer wear, I just wondered if I was missing some perfect pairing that would make it work for winter! Obvs not and I appreciate the helpful posts, I will let it go and find something Christmassy!

You could go green or stone coloured soft, fluffy, waist length jumper and wear suede boots. That might work.

Pleased you like the idea!🙂

Don’t give up OP! I absolutely love the high/low cut of this. Agree with a PP that it just needs a simple vest and sandals for summer, where it will be most at home.

I wonder if the styling in the pic with the bikini top is causing a bit of trickery? Well
worth trying the boots and jumper
combo.

Do you ever watch any of Trinny’s videos? She’s very good at ‘how can we make this summer outfit work for autumn or similar lateral thinking.

Have fun figuring it out! And if all else fails, there’s always next spring.

Flyinggeesei234 · 01/11/2023 17:44

It’s not Topshop by any chance is it? They used to do a lot it that palm print.

Britpopbaby · 01/11/2023 17:45

I think if you did wear it it would need green sequins/ sparkle so green heels, maybe a knitted sparkly top and glossy tights.

QueenBitch666 · 01/11/2023 17:45

It's gorgeous! I'd definitely try the fluffy jumper and boots combo. Dare to be different!

WinchGirl · 01/11/2023 18:08

I think a simple plain body in one of the colours on the skirt, would work. Definitely not black tights, if you don't want bare legs then nude tights would be OK. But I think that it would need a heel to set it off. But yes it is a great skirt!

Ssme92 · 01/11/2023 18:21

I'd style it with a knit jumper and heeled boots, similar to this... You could play around with colours to see what would suit. Might be too casual for Xmas party though.

Riapia · 01/11/2023 18:28

Don’t even think about it.
😉😁😁😁

sweetgingercat · 01/11/2023 20:18

Definitely a short green jumper, fluffy or not! I think it’s beautiful, think forest in winter!

Razorcroft · 01/11/2023 20:22

No.

save it for a sunny date night with a black cropped top, gold jewellery and some pink/green mules or clompy sandals

its not Christmas party attire.

LeonBlack · 01/11/2023 20:24

Unless fancy dress, it’s a firm no.

pictoosh · 01/11/2023 20:24

For me no, it's got palm leaves all over it. If you don't care then you don't care and that's perfectly ok...who says you have to be Christmassy? I like a bit of opulence for the season but that's me.
