Fur stoles

Yay or nay? What to do with them?
I have two. One is a whiteish colour and the other one is a fawn. Both inherited. I can’t think of any occasion in my life (work/dog walk/gym) where I may wear them, but I don’t want to get rid of them. They smell a bit and have lived in the attic for the last 15 years.
Your thoughts.

You mean like a bolero style mini cape or a scarf style long piece of fur or something bigger you can wrap around you?
Last version, just use it instead of a blanket when watching tv and want to snuggle.
Dog(s) might chew it though if it's real fur.

Branster · 18/10/2023 21:49

Not sure how you'd get rid of the smell though. Air them outside as much as possible over a period of a few months for some improvement.

ItsTapasTime · 18/10/2023 21:53

@Branster bolero. I’ll go and get them from the attic tomorrow and post a photo. They are lovely, but not really something you would wear now. They’re probably destined for a life in the attic.

No.

I don't care that they're inherited.

OhNoForever · 18/10/2023 21:56

I want to see! But no, I can't think when you would wear them. School run maybe 😂

justasking111 · 18/10/2023 21:58

Charity shop here doesn't put them out for sale but sends them to a furrier in London who pays them depending on condition and desirability.

ItsTapasTime · 18/10/2023 22:00

@NatashaDancing what do you suggest I do with them?
@OhNoForever school run days are over. 😀👍

Wear them if you want.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to wear real fur. If I saw you somewhere wearing real fur I wouldn't want anything to do with you.

Real fur is disgusting. There's no justification for it.

BeverlyBrook · 18/10/2023 22:02

Donate them to your local am dram society?

justasking111 · 18/10/2023 22:03

eBay sell them. I wonder if they go abroad.

Best suggestion.

ItsTapasTime · 18/10/2023 22:08

They remind me of my nana and her dressing up box. I can’t imagine any occasion when it would be acceptable to wear them now. I think they will stay in the attic.

We have a local national trust place near us that has people who dress up in period costumes - they might be able to make use of them? (Edited to add: if you have anything similar locally?)

ItsTapasTime · 18/10/2023 22:13

@Papillon23 I'll look into it. That sounds like the best option.

OP posts:
NatashaDancing · 18/10/2023 22:16

Sorry I was a bit harsh, but no, it's not really acceptable.

SpuytenDuyvil · 18/10/2023 22:16

Like PP said, give them to your local theatre group. We had inherited furs and did that. They were very pleased.

Branster · 18/10/2023 22:22

Ah bolero! Zero occasion to wear them then.
The style would be OK for eveningwear with a nice gown but I think it's a complete no-no wearing real fur nowadays, especially in public.

I can understand you want to keep them because they hold memories for you and they are probably beautiful too.
As opposed to wanting to get rid of them.

One option, if you can find a tailor specialised in leather/fur maybe get them made into some sort of nice house winter slippers?

ItsTapasTime · 18/10/2023 22:25

Thanks @franke . It’s a bit of minefield subject as although everybody agrees that we shouldn’t have modern furs, we still can’t agree on what to do with the old ones.

OP posts:
ItsTapasTime · 18/10/2023 22:29

@Branster I’m not sure about the house slippers suggestion 😀. I think it’s a toss up between the attic and the national trust.

I don't agree with killing animals for their fur but to not use them seems worse somehow. Like the animal died in vain. The faux fur lining oks so convincing now I don't think I could tell the difference unless it's red fox fur.

AdoraBell · 18/10/2023 22:38

Either donate as suggested to local drama group or like the National Trust, or if you to keep them use them at home, like a small blanket. Depending on the smell, if it’s not a strong odour then hang them in the hallway for a few days.

ItsTapasTime · 18/10/2023 22:45

Thank you for the suggestions. They are certainly from a different era. Beautiful, but not relevant now. My nana had lots of amazing items in her dressing up box. Victorian dresses that were probably a size 6/8, back lace gloves and beautiful felt hats.

QueenBitch666 · 19/10/2023 00:51

I'd give them a decent burial. It's the least you can do to honour their unnecessary and probably incredibly painful death 😭

QueenBitch666 · 19/10/2023 00:54

Death probably being via anal or vaginal electrocution ( mustn't damage the pelt eh )
