Amazing tweed coat

If you were going to buy an amazing, warm, lined tweed coat, where would you look?

I don't quite trust Brora after getting one that was unlined and one from the House of Bruar had a crap zip and wasn't actually as warm as I expected.

It's a total one off and I'd spend up to £1000 for something that will last longer than me - and in the perfect dark green colour.

£900. Double faced. Possibly not dark enough?

I’d go for Holland Cooper or Dubarry - some stunning pieces

Moveoverdarlin · 14/10/2023 20:05

I’d splurge on a Holland Cooper one.

Or this? £770.

House of Bruar.

AnotherFuckingUsername · 14/10/2023 20:19

Posted too soon - normally HoB are good with returns. They've got a wide range of suppliers, worth reconsidering.

carddino · 14/10/2023 20:27

Where are you?

I would agree house of Bruar again. Take your time and look at options.

Other than that check local places. For example Humes in Kelso.

buckingmad · 14/10/2023 20:29

Ew Holland cooper are so tacky now.

I’d go Welligogs

On my ‘when I win the lottery’ list is a coat from Walker Slater in Edinburgh that’s long and has a beautiful swish. They have lined tweed coats in all colours. I did my usual of try the next size up in coats so you can wear a heavy jumper under it.

Is the Cateryn too dark a green?

Donegal tweed.
I don't own any but I saw it a few years ago at a craft exhibition and it was beautiful.

This is very nice https://jackmurphy.ie/products/pamela-tweed-coat

Some beautiful ones, thank you! I need to work out where to go to try some on I think.

I was looking at the Jack Murphy ones but looks like you'd get hit with import tax to ship to the UK.

The Jack Murphy tweed coats are beautiful enough to be worth a journey - but they’re so far from the current oversized and unstructured aesthetic. There’d be a danger of looking undoubtedly classically well-dressed, but … uptight.

Blackandwhitemakesgrey · 14/10/2023 21:25

WhatWillIWear I was wondering about that before I posted it but I think good quality tweed is classic. Its the type of coat that you pass on to your daughter. And when coat styles come and go, the one that will always come back is the classic cut? Its also possible to style it so it doesn't look uptight in the current fashion e.g. current footwear - cowboy style boots? A fushia pink scarf?

I remember buying an old 70s style leather jacket with pointed collar in a vintage store. I went on to buy different bomber styles (collar less) over the years and the one I always go back is the 70s one.

That Gliss coat is beautiful Mollio.

pastabest · 14/10/2023 21:43

Get one made for you if you have the cash.

I make coats for myself because I could never find what I wanted in the shops.

For far less than a £1000 a local tailor could make you a jacket in the exact fabric you want, in the exact shape you want with the exact lining and trims you wanted.

Why settle for an off the peg compromise if you can afford to get exactly what you want?

mollio · 14/10/2023 21:46

It’s is an amazing amazing brand . Really high quality and not fusty and old fashioned like some donegal tweed . V v fine wool and v flattering cuts and sleeves etc .

beeboop2018 · 14/10/2023 21:47

@mollio great to hear 1st hand review of this brand. Been coveting from afar and wondered if they would be worth the investment. Thanks

mollio · 14/10/2023 21:48

And actually I tried that a coat from the brand on in that colour last year ! It’s a nice olive green . One of the stockists is my local boutique - the girls who own it have good taste
