Amazing tweed coat

If you were going to buy an amazing, warm, lined tweed coat, where would you look?

I don't quite trust Brora after getting one that was unlined and one from the House of Bruar had a crap zip and wasn't actually as warm as I expected.

It's a total one off and I'd spend up to £1000 for something that will last longer than me - and in the perfect dark green colour.

Schoffel have this one which I thought was rather nice but might not be to your taste...

On my ‘when I win the lottery’ list is a coat from Walker Slater in Edinburgh that’s long and has a beautiful swish. They have lined tweed coats in all colours. I did my usual of try the next size up in coats so you can wear a heavy jumper under it.

Is the Cateryn too dark a green?

May I just say 'phwoar' - that is my coat of dreams.

Holland Cooper is now tacky. Cheap looking buttons even if the cut is okay.

Following with interest

I bought a fabulous coat from Really Wild - I'm not sure whether they have green ones, but if you decide you want a different colour, they are very good. I've also got Alan Paine, Dubarry and House of Briar coats, though I'm not sure about the HoB quality.

TheCunctator · 14/10/2023 23:35

Briar, not Briar! Past my bedtime...

TheCunctator · 14/10/2023 23:35

Oh FFS. BRUAR!

Max Mara Harris Tweed Coat.

With a budget of up to £1000, I wouldn't look anywhere else.

Get one made for you if you have the cash.

I make coats for myself because I could never find what I wanted in the shops.

For far less than a £1000 a local tailor could make you a jacket in the exact fabric you want, in the exact shape you want with the exact lining and trims you wanted.

Why settle for an off the peg compromise if you can afford to get exactly what you want?

I totally agree with this.

If I had that budget, I'd get in touch with one of the Harris Tweed companies and have a coat made for me.

@blackandwhitemakesgrey
That looks 😍! Love the cut.

I tried on The Jodie from the landskein last year in a shop in Ireland & have lusted after it ever since.
It's a coat of dreams.

I love tweed, especially Harris Tweed, so this should be easy for me. But I often find the style of women's tweed coats a little bit 'off'. Some are just too fussy for my liking, or even when I like the shape, they have that deep 'V' opening so you either freeze or you have to wear a scarf. (I like scarves but I object to being forced into one.) Or they're tie fastening only - no buttons? no thanks.

Margaret Howell usually nails it for me but, looking at her autumn 2023 prices, that would be more like £1600. Max Mara looks over budget too unfortunately.

I do like a couple of those Landskein ones, e.g. the Solace or the Ode but I can only see them in black or navy.

So I think I'd look into what some other posters have already suggested - buying some Harris Tweed cloth from the island and finding someone (ideally on the island to give them the business) to make one up for me in the style of a man's overcoat. I'm not sure how much change, if any, I'd have from £1000 but I'd definitely check it out.

Or, and despite saying, I don't like fussiness, I'd go to the other extreme with something like this Sara Tiara coat (although possibly not enough green for you?) and then go and live in Narnia.

I don't like tie coats because it can look like, in combo with a shawl collar and raglan sleeve like you are wearing a bathrobe. Lazy tailoring. Agree with the PP on that!

Argh, this is so true. I have a lovely wool coat I don't wear because of the stupid 'v' as I haven't ever found a scarf that actually goes with it

That’s what we call, on the Archers thread, ‘a hasty re-write’, @mathaio!

(We like to take some credit when the scriptwriters appear to have taken sudden, unexpected notice of a complaint or Hmm expressed on the thread.)
