Seat-belting anyone?

I've started seeing lots of people doing this only this week (London) and a lot of them being mature / middle aged women. I have only just started throwing a sweater over my shoulders and felt that was a brave new thing for me! Now this! Not a slave to fashion but I do kind of quite like it... I think.

What do others think? (Pic attached)

Seat-belting anyone?

I shall be wearing my sweaters the old fashioned way this time of year!

Zerotorunninghero · 14/10/2023 09:09

I think it will look good if you are cool enough to pull it off. If I tried it I would just look like a toddler that had been left to dress themselves for the day.

QuilBill · 14/10/2023 09:10

Well, she would look good wherever she put her jumper.

BettyBallerina · 14/10/2023 09:10

The classic both arms over the shoulders method is much better.

UndercoverCop · 14/10/2023 09:10

It looks bizarre

mynameiscalypso · 14/10/2023 09:10

I'm not entirely sure what the point is.

LimeCheesecake · 14/10/2023 09:12

Don’t do it with a good jumper, you’ll end up stretching the sleeves, because you’d have to pull it quite tight to keep in place, or you’ll have to hold it as well, ruining the “look”.

DuploTrain · 14/10/2023 09:15

My thoughts:

I’m not sure I want a sweater in one arm pit, it would annoy me.

If it’s cold enough to need a sweater, I’ll be wearing it.

If you don’t look completely “fashion” it will look like you’re having a hot flush and have tried to wrestle your way out of your sweater and got tangled.

digley · 14/10/2023 09:17

Haha @DuploTrain good point!

I did see a mature woman doing it with a sweatshirt yesterday work over a shirt, with jeans and gazelles. It looked really good on her.

Looks stupid

QPWO · 14/10/2023 09:21

this makes my armpits itch to look at, I hate it!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 14/10/2023 09:27

Oooh looks good
also that first woman looks fab! Love her low slung combats

canyon2000 · 14/10/2023 09:30

I think it looks very contrived.

mondaytosunday · 14/10/2023 09:37

Nope. Hate the French tuck too.

LaMarschallin · 14/10/2023 09:46

I now feel very fashion forward, having read that article, as I've been "lampshading" for years.

The trouble with something like this is that an awful lot (the majority?) of people won't know it's a thing.
Bit like the French tuck where - however well you arrange the shirt either side of the tuck, many people will think you tried to tuck your shirt in, only for it to pop out when you reached up for something (eg a darling little scarf to add a pop of colour to that amazingly cut sack dress).

I suspect a lot of people might like being in on the trend and feel quite pleased if someone points out that their jersey looks like it's fallen off their shoulder: "No, no! It's "seatbelting" - have you not heard about it?".
I think it serves no useful purpose other than to include another referenced item of clothing (as the article says) and will play merry hell with the cuffs of the jersey.
Also looks uncomfortable, having a wodge of wool stuck under one's armpit.

So, impractical, expensive (if it ruins the sleeves), niche, slightly ridiculous looking and not especially flattering...
I'm fairly sure some regular S&B posters will adore it.

I'm a really slow typist.

Doggymummar · 14/10/2023 09:50

I don't see the point, it looks stupid ruined the jumper and doesn't keep you warm. I see zero point

🤣 same.

TweedTart · 14/10/2023 09:52

I’m too old to bother with styles that look uncomfortable or impractical. Knotted sleeves over my large breasts? No thanks!

Loubelle70 · 14/10/2023 09:53

If i want jumper i will put it on fully...or old skool grunge and tie round waist if get too hot. Im 50... just realised ive not moved out the grunge nirvana stage 🤣

Klingfilm · 14/10/2023 10:03

I saw that article and thought it might be another advert for Gitta Banko. Someone on the team there is obsessed.

BristolBlueGlasses · 14/10/2023 10:09

Wearing a knitted tank top will do just the same job without making you look like you dressed in a wind tunnel.

My first thoughts. I don't like knotting a jumper over my shoulders for that reason if I've taken it off because it's too hot.
