I’m in my 20s and this is the first wedding I’ve been invited to (outside of family when I was younger). I’m not sure what is appropriate to wear, any ideas? 😊

the wedding is at a large estate in the countryside, very picturesque!

The colours bride said are a no: white, cream, pink, red, teal, gold, dusty blue.

I might try navy or green. I’m petite so the length of the dress is important. I wanted something maxi length but don’t want to risk it dragging on the ground. Are sleeveless dresses inappropriate at a wedding? What sort of jacket would look right?

Silkfred do some lovely dresses ideal for weddings!

Mamaof1DD · 12/10/2023 22:30

Have a look on ASOS, you can filter by “wedding guest”, and then colour, size, sleeve style, length etc.

Sleeveless dresses are absolutely fine! You might find that other younger guests don’t wear a jacket at all - I’m the top end of my 20s and live in the very North and always brave the cold for a wedding!

Good luck :)

Just what I was thinking. Fancy dictating to people what colours they can and can't wear! OP, are you sure you want to go?

Those are the colours of the bridal party 😊

Dress 1 for me, gorgeous 😍

Loubelle70 · 13/10/2023 09:02

I love 3 but i think cut of 4 is more modest. Others may upstage bride inmho

xanadu123 · 13/10/2023 09:10

3 or 4. The others are lovely but more suitable for a cocktail party. You can of course wear whatever you want but I would avoid anything too figure hugging or revealing as it always leans into evening party/night out territory rather than wedding ceremony.

moose62 · 13/10/2023 10:25

3 or 4....others might be considered too glamorous and upstage the bridal party.

TWmover · 13/10/2023 10:26

The dresses you linked are lovely however I'd say they lean more evening/cocktail/black tie/city. Is there a dress code stated? Perhaps something a bit more reflecting the venue/countryside. Sleeveless is fine however if its winter it might be easier to choose something with sleeves rather than having to find a suitable jacket/shrug etc. If you go for maxi length choose wedges rather than slim heels in case you encounter grass, small stones, cobbles!

Janieforever · 13/10/2023 10:48

I think dress 4 is most appropriate and nicest. 1 and 2 are more cocktail party, not very keen on dress 3.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/10/2023 10:56

I disagree with the comments that 1 or 2 may upstage the bride. The only question for me would be - will you be warm enough in dress 1 and 2.

Choice 3 and 4 are a bit frumpy imo and I’m early 50s.

My dd is 15 and she wore this dress to a recent country house wedding. We chose it with the MOB. She wore a cream jacket with it. https://www.quizclothing.co.uk/clothes/00100035943.html

I wore this and didn’t look out of place. I also wore a jacket for the wedding itself, which I think was appropriate for the actual ceremony.

Why is everyone suggesting evening dresses for a country house wedding? Confused

Will it be taking place in the daytime, @contactme, or at night?

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 13/10/2023 14:53

The colours bride said are a no: white, cream, pink, red, teal, gold, dusty blue.

Can you find a multicoloured dress that incorporates all of these?

martha4clark · 13/10/2023 15:31

I think 3 is really lovely

Not really. I had loads of people asking me what colours bridesmaids and my mum /mil were wearing as they didn't want to match with them. It's not always the bride dictating anything

MikeRafone · 13/10/2023 17:30

I thought green was a no no for a wedding guest?

The dresses are lovely - very cocktail party and not so much wedding? You may feel awkward if no one else is in a cocktail style dress

Are you going to the evening part or all day?

LifesShortTalkFast · 13/10/2023 18:15

The colours bride said are a no: white, cream, pink, red, teal, gold, dusty blue

How does this even work? As a guest how are you supposed to know what colours the bride has deemed off-limits? (I wouldn't wear white or cream as a wedding guest, but have never, ever received instructions from a bride regarding what colours are "allowed", nor would I think to ask.)

Please tell me this is not a new thing. 🙁

Movinghouseatlast · 13/10/2023 18:19

Number 4 of those. 1 and 2 are evening dresses rather than wedding.

contactme · 13/10/2023 18:32

I’m not sure of the unwritten rules for guests… thanks for the direction! A colleague suggested I wear green, didn’t realise it was frowned upon?

Any other example dresses would be really helpful!

this is another one I came across, it’s not as figure fitting https://www.tedbaker.com/uk/p/Womens/Clothing/Dresses/GABIE-One-Shoulder-Drape-Midi-Dress-Dark-Blue/157697-DK-BLUE

I’ll be there in the daytime and the evening.

Also could a blazer/trouser co-ord or jumpsuit work?

thanks for the tips! Do any of these work?

Dress 1

Dress 2

Dress 3

Dress 4

I like dress 4 the best but any of those would be fine
