Hello again to everyone from the last thread and welcome to anyone who enjoys talking about this aesthetic .. and if you have photos to share even better!

We've been discussing woollen jumpers, tweed skirts and jackets (with and without elbow patches), flannel trousers, fair isle tank tops, leather boots, culottes, berets and many other appealing garments, and more recently novels, poetry, libraries in general and even home decor with a DA vibe. Plus tortoiseshell spectacles and lorgnettes. I don't think we've touched on DA hairstyles yet although I've been giving that some thought ..

A DA quote I came across the other day: "I declare after all, there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." (P&P of course)

If curling up in a wing-backed armchair in front of a log fire, with candles flickering, sipping tea from a china mug while reading your Jane Austen or Bronte novel sounds appealing, this thread might be for you. Or if you just like the clothes - that works too.

Our first thread below:

And where to find it? This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trous...

Well, my Christmas present has arrived! The documents from the Bod.<mwah mwah to lovely librarians>

The marriage contract is gorgeous. Superb condition, beautiful clear handwriting (more than can be said of many a clerk). It's an original, with the real signatures of the parties.

And unexpectedly the whole thing is witnessed by John Cant – the chap from whose household Mary Dudgeon had eloped a couple of decades earlier. His signature is twatty elaborate...

Notsosecrethistory · 12/12/2023 23:00

@TressiliansStone I am thrilled for you! I have got so invested in this on your behalf!

JaneJeffer · 13/12/2023 13:14

That sounds lovely @TressiliansStone

Some lovely things i can't afford here. I love the corduroy jacket.

TressiliansStone · 13/12/2023 18:47

That jacket is ver' nice.

TressiliansStone · 21/12/2023 12:23

Thank you so much for your much needed encouragement! I've done most of my (very small) Christmas prep and had time read the marriage contract in detail.

On the bride's side, her eldest brother stood in for their late father and gave "two thousand merks Scotts money" tocher (dowry); the bridegroom put up four thousand merks and the liferent of one of his houses; the income from the invested money was to go to the couple, and after their deaths the six thousand merks was to be shared out among their children.

I'm finding it another slightly sad read because, although it does cover both cases, the contract basically assumes the bride will outlive her husband and carefully details that – even if she remarries – the money must be used to "aliment, Educate, and mantain the said child or children so existing in boarding cloathing, Schoolling, and oþr necessarys according to their rank and station [...] And furder to putt the male children to Lawfull callings and imployment and pay their appretenice[sic] fees out of the first end of their patrimoney"

So different from how it panned out: the groom remarried, and the orphaned male child "When not 15 years of age went aboard of Ship bound of England without receiving a Single farthing from his Step Mother and having nothing in his pocket except £1-16[d] which he had received from a friend of his fathers was obliged to work for his passage there".

Notsosecrethistory · 22/12/2023 10:33

That is sad @TressiliansStone

I am now Christmas prepping, as I've just finished work.
I was hoping for a fairly quiet time of it, but I've got unexpected (yet VERY welcome) visitors descending. I hope they love me enough to accept my crappy cooking. 😂

Any Christmas outfit inspo around these parts?

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 22/12/2023 10:42

Morning.

That is all fascinating @TressiliansStone ! I did a History degree in Ye Olden Times and loved reading documents like that.

Not much christmas outfit inspo here I am afraid. But today I am wearing a grey wool dress with a navy blue cashmere blend poncho. And a brooch. I re-arranged my wardrobe and discovered I have more dressy type clothes I can fit into than I realised!

I did buy a woollen vest from amazon that arrived. It is going to be really versatile.

Also loving this youtube channel- more cottage core but very restful.

@OrangePumpkinLobelia oooh I think that's going to be my new favourite channel. I love how she's actually wearing the clothes and has done her home in the same style, embracing the lifestyle. Very restful vlogs.

I always find it a bit fake when the channels creators just buy/gifted/make the clothes and wear them for pics only. Like they're just selling an impractical dream that nobody has the lifestyle/confidence to wear.

That's why I love this thread, everyone is wearing their clothes. It's great there's this little DA niche of women scattered around quietly living the DA vibe.

That document is sad @TressiliansStone but fascinating insight into how people lived.

I love unexpected visitors too @Notsosecrethistory hope you all have fun.

TressiliansStone · 22/12/2023 14:17

I am taking note of all these vests and waistcoats, @OrangePumpkinLobelia . I can see that's going to be my New Year purchase...

TressiliansStone · 01/01/2024 00:22

Happy New Year to all you lovely darklings! Brew

Happy new year to us all!

worstofbothworlds · 02/01/2024 08:32

I've had a New Year wardrobe cull - was supposed to be to see what I don't wear (it's all gone in the basement in IKEA bags except for 1 or 2 of each item but I have found some holes, mainly plain tops (I don't do black but navy/grey/blue/pink/purple are all fine if anyone has spotted any). I tend to buy loads of prints and then wonder why they don't go. Haven't worn my lovely fair isle vest for this reason!

Notsosecrethistory · 03/01/2024 09:59

HNY!
@worstofbothworlds Uniqlo heat tech are goo for plain layers for under things like fairisle vests.
I am eyeballing some cords in the sale... and a watch that looks quite pocket watch-y, but on a strap.

Notsosecrethistory · 03/01/2024 09:59

*good, not goo

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 03/01/2024 11:37

Happy New Year!!

worstofbothworlds · 03/01/2024 12:04

I've ordered some plain blouses from places like Thought and Fat Face, I probably need about 2 all told.

I have a confession to make.Xmas Blush

My new Joules jacket had a watch pocket.

So, to round off my uncharacteristic spending spree, for Christmas I got it a real, working, Victorian pocket watch.

It's such an absurd purchase I was too embarrassed to mention it even here.

Also, I was afraid I might start you all off.Grin

Clearly not – you were there already.GrinGrin

@TressiliansStone I LOVE it!

Notsosecrethistory · 03/01/2024 13:35

are we considering a chain for it!? I love watch chains, and watch fobs. I have a watch fob (or two) that I wear as a pendant.
