Hello again to everyone from the last thread and welcome to anyone who enjoys talking about this aesthetic .. and if you have photos to share even better!

We've been discussing woollen jumpers, tweed skirts and jackets (with and without elbow patches), flannel trousers, fair isle tank tops, leather boots, culottes, berets and many other appealing garments, and more recently novels, poetry, libraries in general and even home decor with a DA vibe. Plus tortoiseshell spectacles and lorgnettes. I don't think we've touched on DA hairstyles yet although I've been giving that some thought ..

A DA quote I came across the other day: "I declare after all, there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." (P&P of course)

If curling up in a wing-backed armchair in front of a log fire, with candles flickering, sipping tea from a china mug while reading your Jane Austen or Bronte novel sounds appealing, this thread might be for you. Or if you just like the clothes - that works too.

Our first thread below:

And where to find it? This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trous...

@AlmondButterToast I think we are pioneering hobbitcore right now.

After careful googling I have concluded that hobbitcore includes elements of cottagecore with the roaring fire, cooking with ingredients from my beautiful country garden aesthetic; also aspects of dark academia with the waistcoats, books and maps. It has similarities with goblincore in that you're barefoot and may be wearing green and yellow clothes but without all the frogs. They should start doing festivals for these factions so we can meet others with similar interests my dh is not interested in discussing this at all.

Feel like I can get on board with all of this, including DH not being remotely interested!!

Oh, I think I am perfect for hobbitcore! Short, fat and hairy toes!

Hi all- sorry for long silence things have been a bit manic around my way.

Upmarket hobbit core might describe a neighbour of ours. Elderly and slightly tubby man who really enjoys his tweed. He gets tweed imported from Ireland and then has it tailored into three piece suits. Lately he has taken to wearing dark maroon corduroy trousers and a heather-coloured tweed waistcoat with a cream short with voluminous sleeves underneath. It looks pretty good.

School concert tonight and I am hoping to attend although I have hurt my back. Planning on pulling out a black velvet skirt and jacket combo with a forest green beret and forest green faux-velvet gloves. Plus brooch.

Notsosecrethistory · 08/12/2023 10:35

@OrangePumpkinLobelia both you and your neighbour sound bloody stylish!
I'm struggling with the motivation to even be dressed today*, let alone pull together an outfit that looks good.

*I am dressed. But I'm annoyed about it, and want to be in my PJs.

TressiliansStone · 08/12/2023 13:55

Those both sound fabulous outfits! Have a lovely concert!

Heh, yep, dressed but annoyed about it sounds like me many days.

See also, if I'm wearing Dark Academic under my oodie-a-alike, am I still Dark Academic?

Darkacademic · 08/12/2023 19:56

I didn’t bother getting out of pyjamas today. Just put my oodie over them and said it was so cold I needed another layer. Thank goodness for working from home with no one who cares what I look like when they see me on camera!

InfiniteTeas · 09/12/2023 09:12

Morning.
I've been dipping into these threads on and off since the first one popped up on active weeks ago. I am not sure I can pull off full DA style, but I wish I could! I do have these threads to thank for sending me off down a rabbit hole that ended in a rather lovely vintage velvet military-ish coat that I've been wearing almost non-stop.
On the book recommendation front, I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned If We We're Villains by M L Rio? It's set in an arts college in the US, and is a murder mystery involving 6 final year students of Shakespearean performance. I thought it was great, and very DA.

BonjourCrisette · 09/12/2023 10:03

I loved We Were Villains!

TheDarrellRivers · 10/12/2023 03:27

@worstofbothworlds
i think you have!!

TheDarrellRivers · 10/12/2023 03:29

@OrangePumpkinLobelia

you both sound incredibly stylish

TheDarrellRivers · 10/12/2023 06:40

What is everyone planning to wear for Christmas Day?
I’m undecided as yet…

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 10/12/2023 08:35

Thanks! I am too tubby to be stylish I am afraid but hope to remedy that by the end of next year. (2 stone to lose).

I have put We Were villains on my Christmas list!

Chrysanthemum5 · 10/12/2023 09:07

I was at a conference recently wearing an old dress from next - black with 3/4 sleeves and a shirred waist. I love it as it is so comfy and I like to feel comfortable 😄. A young and very beautiful woman came up and complimented me on my 'dark academia' look, I'd never heard of it so just said thank you. Now I know it's a thing!

For Christmas I am either wearing a black dress from M&S which has gold embroidery and pockets (and an elasticated waist so I can eat lots) or leggings and this top

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 10/12/2023 09:18

I really like that top!

TressiliansStone · 10/12/2023 11:45

Oh my goodness, that shirt and some of the other velvet ones are gorgeous!

Yes flattering for those of us with a tum because it is fitted elsewhere I love it!

TressiliansStone · 10/12/2023 12:46

I'm liking the sound of this more and more...

TheDarrellRivers · 10/12/2023 15:22

That is a lovely top!

Darklane · 10/12/2023 15:24

Velvet, ah…gorgeous. Alas I’m owned by four very tiny but very hairy dogs who all think on me or glued to me is the comfiest place in the world.

Which some would say is way better than a velvet top 😁

LogicVoid · 11/12/2023 08:24

Looking for recommendations for jewellery, specifically rings please, lower end of budget under £100!

worstofbothworlds · 11/12/2023 11:46

Me in check wool coat and fair isle beret on Sat.
11 year old: You look like and old lady (thanks bud). "What did you say sonny?" "ooh my back" (bends over and holds back like cartoon old lady).
I am not appreciated, I tell you.
I think I said I was considering doing this

I think I could definitely find 33 dark academia items and annoy my DCs even more!
