Waterproof winter coat for football mum

HGC2 · 07/10/2023 13:35

I am currently soaked to the skin and frozen watching my son pay football. I need a longish warm waterproof to get me through the season. Any recommendations for one that’s under £200?

Can second the Lands End Stadium Squall, had mine for about 15 years and still going strong.

Oh and meant to add that with a little judicious Googling it was possible to find most styles with at least 50% off, if not more.

Can anyone tell me what the sizing is like on the Janelle? I am petite in height but currently around a size 14 with big boobs and I'd like to be able to wear a jumper etc under it.

I might be tempted to go up a size.

Here you go - you may not be the most chic mum pitchside, but you will be dry! Sizing is huge, just to warn you - think the small fitted me when I tried one on and I'm size 14-16.

I have a long waxed coat, It is heavy, it is unlined so can layer accordingly. Absolutely water and wind proof and hard wearing. NewForest Clothing Co.

Also @HGC2 if you have a Blue Light card you can get 20% off Seasalt

Another vote for 'dryrobe' type rather than a coat. Lots of brands available now - make sure it is waterproof rather than water resistant (they aren't all) and that it has long sleeves. Definitely downsize as you won't need the room to change under. Got mine for outdoor swimming but my neighbour has borrowed it several times to use on her market stall when the weather has been horrid and now has one on her Christmas list.

TheClitterati · 09/10/2023 14:09

don't muck around OP - get yourself a big dryrobe style coat - you won't regret it.

Leggytigberk · 09/10/2023 14:14

I think I would have a problem with draughts getting in/under those loose cut Dtyrobe things.
Same as with wide leg trousers.

Uniqlo "windproof" range

Seasalt Janelle. Love mine. Daughter says all the primary school teachers have them for playground duty!

I’ve got this and love it. I don’t think it’s the warmest coat ever for the depths of winter but I’m very cold blooded. It’s perfect for chilly and wet days though.

I also have this coat and it's brilliant for the depths of winter. I've just come on to see if anyone can help me find the sweaty betty motion long line parka in khaki? I can't find it in stock in a large anywhere and I really want it. 😞

I have it in a 14 which is my usual dress size and I'm a 34DD, 5'4 and can still wear a jumper comfortably in it - it's cosy but roomy if that makes sense

If anyone’s thinking of buying a dry robe type thing there’s a social enterprise company called The Ootsider here in Scotland that make brilliant ones and re-invest the profits to donate Sleeping Coats to homeless people for free https://theootsider.co.uk/

100% a dry robe (or other decent quality change robe). Saved me last season on the football and rugby sidelines. See them worn a lot now.

Joobles · 09/10/2023 16:00

I've had a Seasalt Janelle coat for a couple of years. Nothings get through it - not wind, not rain, not cold. Excellent investment. With a good pair of wellies you'll be grand. My children play grassroots and I do lots of dog walking - never let me down yet.

Bollindger · 09/10/2023 17:02

Get a Barbour a long one.
You will never regret it as your just add more waterproofing as needed.
Then buy layers for underneath.

Sugargliderwombat · 09/10/2023 18:37

I would recommend a good ski jacket. I have one from topshop SNO.

LookingforMaryPoppins · 09/10/2023 19:16

A dry robe! Waterproof, wind proof and huge! cover you head to toe!

I use mine for (spectating) football, rugby, sailing, hockey, and netball! Weather is always better for cricket 🤣

I feel your pain. I got a Rains waterproof puffer in summer on Asos when it was about half price. Plus, I'm going to get some waterproof socks. £24 ish but I'm sure bloody worth it! Or obvs wellies with thick socks is an alternative.

The Seasalt Janelle has been on my radar, maybe it would be warm enough with a thermal top then a woollen top underneath...

I also have the Seasalt Janelle (in Petite which is perfect length on me at 5 foot 1), and it's surprisingly warm given how light and 'thin' it appears. I think this must be because it is actually windproof, so you're protected from the windchill factor, as well as properly waterproof.

It's also reasonably roomy up top, so I w never had a problem layering up underneath when it's really freezing out.

It's been my school run coat for at least 4 years now, and still looks basically new.

Hayliebells · 09/10/2023 20:33

You need a Didriksons. I have two (winter weight and spring/autumn weight), both are great, fully waterproof and very well made.
