I am currently soaked to the skin and frozen watching my son pay football. I need a longish warm waterproof to get me through the season. Any recommendations for one that’s under £200?

I have a Rains puffer. Warm and dry!

I got this last year: it's really warm, waterproof and quite flattering too.

I feel your pain. I got a Rains waterproof puffer in summer on Asos when it was about half price. Plus, I'm going to get some waterproof socks. £24 ish but I'm sure bloody worth it! Or obvs wellies with thick socks is an alternative.

The Seasalt Janelle has been on my radar, maybe it would be warm enough with a thermal top then a woollen top underneath...

I got a big duvet style coat from Sweaty Betty a couple of years ago and I now can't wear anything else.

Love my Seasalt Janelle

I’ve just bought the Women's Squall Waterproof Stadium Long Coat - absolutely brilliant and comes in regular and petite sizes and various colours https://www.landsend.co.uk/Womens_Squall_Waterproof_Stadium_Long_Coat/pp/6039375.html

I clicked knowing I would not be the first to recommend the seasalt janelle!

I got it for wet school runs last year. Lived in it all winter, stayed warm and dry. At least two other school run mums asked me where it was from then turned up in it the next week.

On the pricier side, but there’s normally a code or offer around if you search online, either for seasalt direct or a third party seller. They have a good eBay outlet too.

Didriksons. I researched this a few years ago after a really struggling with the cold when standing around. I bought a Didriksons winter coat in 2020 and it's still in brilliant condition and fully warm and waterproof now. It looks set to carry on for years! The difference it makes having a proper coat is huge!

https://www.blazewear.com/shop-by-activity/outdoors/heated-base-layer-top-unisex-black something like these are great I’ve got a pair of heated socks they work really well.
or when it’s really cold I fill up my hot water bottle that has a strap with hand warmer pockets. Also flask of hot chocolate and a comfy camping chair really helps. Make sure you have a good pair of shoes on otherwise your loosing all your body heat

Another vote for Landsend - they're Canadian & know how to make warm & waterproof coats. (Their swimwear is also v good.)

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/10/2023 01:52

Another vote for Landsend. I’ve been wearing their coats for years. 100% waterproof. You’ll probably want the down thick one for winter otherwise the stadium squall with a thinner jacket or gilet underneath - both linked upthread.

Also look at their sales in case you can grab a bargain. The down coat in the reduced colours is a steal.

EmmaPaella · 09/10/2023 02:20

The Seasalt Janelle is what you need if it’s properly tipping down with rain but not for really cold. I also have a Fat Face parka which is also v warm and waterproof. I have owned a Didrikson (which I still have) and think the Fat Face one is pretty good compared to that which is a lot more expensive.

ResoluteRaccoon · 09/10/2023 03:50

Rains are on brand alley right now

mrssmiling · 09/10/2023 07:00

Love my Seasalt Janelle. When it’s really cold I layer up - Uniqlo thermals, and wool jumper underneath - very warm! I’m actually on my second Seasalt coat - the first lasted years.

AreYouShittingMe · 09/10/2023 07:18

Another Didrikson coat owner here. Over a decade in the touchline and the Erica is better than my previous North Face parka. I do feel the cold and this one is warm and waterproof, and windproof. Great for dog walking as well, as doesn't make me too warm. I live in it in the winter.

DryRobe and Muck Boots
Layers to suit to weather under the DryRobe. Wool rich socks in the wellies.

DH is the one that has done nearly all the rugby and football duties over the years - he had a berghaus one that did really well and when that got really shabby I got him a Didrikson which he similarly loves.

however he noted early on that no matter how toasty he was up top, his legs would get cold. I got him a basic pair of waterproof and windproof walking trousers with a soft warm fleecy lining from Go Outdoors on their sales for those with one of their card - think they cost about £10. He was really wary about having them - didn’t think it was worth having a pair of trousers he was only wearing for a couple of hours a week…. Well it soon ended up being for 2xmatches and 3x training and then other times he needed to be out in the cold. They kept him really warm and cosy and were really well used - to the point he ended up buying a more expensive pair that were over-tousers that he could wear if he was going somewhere that he needed to be indoors too. Plus lots of the other dads ended up being jealous of dh being warm and/or dry when they weren’t and buying their own version.

he had hiking boots that were waterproof that kept his feet dry.

but can definitely recommend adding a cosy pair of waterproof windproof trousers to your outfit to keep nice and warm easily!
