Camera bags with straps...dated?

I've been using mine for a couple of years now and it is just so useful, just the right size to keep phone, purse, lipbalm etc, without going overboard. I prefer a structured little bag that keeps its shape but I feel a little bit like a walking cliché now, typical 'middle aged mum' uniform with fancy woven strap. Are they a cliché?

Ready for an autumn winter bag but not sure what to go for. I really like these bags but they're very of their time iyswim.
What other similar styles could I look for which are a little different? I love a satchel/saddlebag type but the practicality of the zip top and not fiddling with clasps is a thing.

I know what you mean about middle aged mum uniform. I bought a woven strap for my Aspinal camera bag but switched it back to the leather strap because I felt like a cliche 😄

betsyannegrey · 06/10/2023 15:49

Yes, I think their time has passed. They are useful, but they've been around now for going on for 10 years and I need a change.
The colourful webbing strap look has definitely passed its sell by date.

For A/W I have bought a couple of shoulder bags, which have a touch of the 70s about them. Not quite as 'hands free' as the cross body, but I'm getting used to them and really like the look.

betsyannegrey · 06/10/2023 15:55

Actually another thread just reminded me of the Uniqlo sling bag, which is ubiquitous, but definitely not as 'dated' as the cross body.

Its hands free and comes is lots of colours so maybe with a try OP

MrsCarson · 06/10/2023 16:22

Might be out of date but they are so comfy I'm not giving mine up just yet.

MissFizzyPop · 06/10/2023 16:37

I'm so outdated I was only recently aware that camera bags were a thing! 😂

Windsor1o2 · 06/10/2023 19:09

I've just bought a little khaki green camera bag for autumn. Such a handy size. It's got a thin leather strap though. I think you're right about the patterned/woven straps although I'm still using mine I don't think I'll buy that style again.

minipie · 06/10/2023 19:42

My camera bag died in the summer and I bought a Uniqlo sling to replace it. I am officially a sheep 😆 (I do actually love the uniqlo bag)

My wife, my 10 year old daughter and I all use various models of Billingham camera bags as day to day carriers. They hold their value extremely well, too.

TheOGCCL · 06/10/2023 20:19

I think thinner straps are more timeless.

Same! I’ve been using the same Marc Jacobs black messenger bag for the past five years and had started to consider a camera bag so that I could fit more in. Only to learn they’re outdated Sad

Maybe something like a Lululemon belt bag? Or a Cambridge satchel?

I like smaller bags too. But a small handbag with a long thin strap feels like it is something my mum would use.
I reluctantly gave up my perfectly sized leopard strap camera bag when I saw too many around and matched two others in a small group.

I don't think it's dated. Just over done

HateTheView · 06/10/2023 22:49

Love a camera bag but also love a Kipling. Just bought a small Kipling that I wear over one shoulder as my camera bags all have the long crossbody straps! Though I do have a small camera bag that came with 2 straps, one is thin and adjustable so it's short enough to comfortably go over one shoulder. Just have to not put too much stuff in it! 🙈🤣

EfficientlyDecluttering · 06/10/2023 22:56

I think it's the wide patterned straps that are the issue, they do seem to be absolutely everywhere and often I look at one and think the whole outfit would look better with a plain strap. I'm a big fan of the Uniqlo ones at the moment but well aware they could start to look clichéd too.

I'm not in fashion when it comes to bags, because I've just got a large leather tote bag and I love it so much more than being strangled by small bags over my body! I also didn't realise cross body and camera bags were a thing til I read it on here and then realised pretty much every middle-aged woman in the world was wearing one except me, so I tried, but they aren't for me. I love a bigger bag as you can put shopping in it and carry round a Kindle, sunglasses, everything. That hasn't answered your question, but I think with bags, a lovely colour, nice quality, something you like wins out, don't worry so much about trendiness if that works for you functionally (I'm normally in the don't worry about functionality camp of dressing but with a bag it has to work with your everyday life).

Blinkityblonk · 07/10/2023 05:27

As for what to get next, there was a great thread on here the other week about someone looking for a tan bag for under £100 and there were a few slouchy leather ones on there, as someone else said on here, with a 70's vibe, and I'd get one of those if I didn't love the giant leather totes that stand up all by themselves so much, I'm getting another one!

TerfTalking · 07/10/2023 09:45

I love my camera bag, but it has a plain leather strap and not one of those webbed coloured things. I love it so much I thought about getting another in brown, now you've all put me off.

Justkoko · 07/10/2023 10:16

@TerfTalking to be honest,I think it's the colourful straps that are ubiquitous, a camera type bag is pretty classic when you think about it.

Never got the patterned woven strap. Really didn’t like the look. I have a cute Coach camera bag but always used the leather strap

greyhairnomore · 07/10/2023 10:22

I've got a few with the woven straps and I think they're dated. Looking for something different now.
