Ankle boots for dresses

FabFitFifties · 01/10/2023 21:45

I'm slowly rediscovering my style, after having a child in my 40's and completely losing my way. If I wear a dress it tends to be midi, full skirted. What kind of ankle boots would look best? I've always worn long boots. Need both daytime and dressier. I'm 5ft 8.

This is my silhouette too. I prefer ankle boots that are relatively fitted at the top, ie don’t gape. I prefer suede or velvet to leather. For daytime I would go for a block heel and a rounded toe and for evening something a bit more pointed with a higher heel.

Following with interest!

Me too, I need a pair for winter.

This is my go to look too. I’ve got lots of pairs of black ankle boots. These are ones I brought last week - super comfy and don’t ‘gape’ at the top. Slightly lower heel than I usually wear but fab looking These

Different coloured boots look good too - burgundy, teal, forest green (all in suede tho) Try Next or Moda in PelleThese in green

There really isn’t a ‘best’, @FabFitFifties - you’re free to choose whichever style most pleases you and your mirror.

Where to look for beautiful ankle boots is a different matter.

If you favour a romantic look and your full skirts veer towards the Cabbages and Roses style, you’d probably like the daintier examples from

Lanx.

If you want something chunkier you may prefer Grenson

Penelope Chilvers always seem quite ladylike.

Whereas Trickers are definitely rugged.

Here are 347 options from Matches, all with examples of how they might be worn.

@Stripeypyjamas - I really like those boots. I’m not sure which size to order - I’m generally ok with a 4 but sometimes need a 4.5. Do they come up big or small would you say?

Cobwobs · 02/10/2023 09:22

I think a sock top boot gives a nice silhouette, maybe something like these

I’m in my early 40s and my style is very similar
to yours - I own the ‘Beetle’ black ankle boots from Russell and Bromley and they are perfect with midi dresses or jeans:

Hobbs and Fairfax & Favor are also great for ankle boots that look good with both dresses and jeans.

How is the traction on these? Are they slippy on smooth surfaces / going down steep slopes? They look like they wouldn’t have great grip.

I've ordered my usual size and they are snug not tight but also v fluffy inside so I suspect that will be trodden down with time too. So I'd say go with your normal size but size up if you are half sizes.

Are fairfax and favour worth the astronomical price tag? I’ve been listing after their tall boots but can’t justify £400, I think…

Yes I love those! I should of said I've got quite skinny lower legs, which makes me hesitate with wider tops - these look great for day time

Thankyou, I can see those working but I'm not willing to pay that much.

I would say that flat chunky chelsea type ankle boots are in, this year the cut seems to be slightly higher than a standard ankle boot. I work at a uni and have a 22yo and this style certainly seems "in".

Something like this

I think I'll have those in Burgundy - whether I wear with a dress or not. Lovely thankyou. You've also made me realise my Kickers are worth trying.

I've got some sock boots - why haven't I thought of wearing with dresses? I think I might need to rake out all the boots I already have, and do a fashion show - not sure how interested DP and DS will be though. Thankyou everyone, some great ideas.

They are very expensive but really beautifully made and last (in my experience). I can’t afford to buy actual designer boots/shoes but I feel like these are quality designs that are affordable as a special treat and I won’t have to replace them after a short period of time. I have two pairs of the tall Belgravia boots and one pair of ankle Rockingham boots and all three look just as good as when I bought them two-three years ago!
