You're a red-headed 18 year old. What do you want for your birthday?

DNiece 2 is nearing 18. Classic Celtic colouring. She likes clothes but, unlike DNiece 1, who is 100% athleisure, I find buying clothes for her tricky as she has quite varied style, so it's hit and miss.

I want something that's a bit of a treat and that she will want to wear for a while, but not necessarily something that she is going to want to keep forever - I'd rather she had something she will enjoy now. Budget is about £100 as I will also be giving her some cold, hard cash 😉

Is a cashmere jumper too boring? If a jumper, what colour? I feel like people always give red-heads green, so it might be nice to give something different.

Or jewellery? She doesn't wear a lot but does have some necklaces. Would you go with silver or gold for her colouring?

She doesn't really wear make up and she's not into bags. Her hobby is a super-niche sport, so not something I can really buy for. Unfortunately her parents had a messy divorce so I can't ask her mum and my DB will not have a clue about fashion.

TIA

I always think purple looks stunning on people with red hair.

Howtosolveit · 29/09/2023 19:34

What colour eyes does she have OP? I am a redhead with blue eyes and suit different colours from redheads with brown eyes.

Howtosolveit · 29/09/2023 19:34

Definitely gold jewellery though.

Tiddlywinkly · 29/09/2023 19:36

Red head here. Teal, electric blue and jewel colours can work really well. I have a mix of silver, rose gold and gold (but not too yellow) jewellery. At 18 I would have accidentally shrunk a cashmere jumper, but you know if she's prepared to care for it properly.

woodpeckerz · 29/09/2023 19:36

My red headed DD (similar age) loves Hissy fit clothes. Made in the UK out of dead stock fabrics.

ambitchious · 29/09/2023 19:43

Edit; I see now she is not into bags..sorry!!

My dd loved the (cheap) uniqlo corduroy bag, the colour was the same as her hair (much nicer irl).

My dd has bright green eyes, I think you are right in that eye colour makes a difference in what suits you..

Definitely have a look at the electric blue M&S one then. Other good colours for her are likely to be teal, royal purple, tomato red (warm undertones), terracotta, coral pink, tan.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 29/09/2023 20:26

These are all really helpful suggestions, thanks. Loving the colour suggestions - I can definitely see electric blue looking fab on her - and you're right that she she does suit plum-shades of purple. I'm not brave to pick something out for her from Hissy Fit clothing myself, but I'll let her know about it - looks perfect for her.

I would buy jewellery- she is never going to spend this on herself. Something classic

lifeturnsonadime · 29/09/2023 20:36

Is Colour me beautiful still a thing? I was bought this as a gift once and I was surprised that as a red head with blue eyes I could get away with wearing more colours than I'd realised, even certain shades of red!

It might not be exactly what you have in mind and maybe not for an 18th birthday but I enjoyed it.

Howtonamechange · 29/09/2023 20:37

How about a handbag?

namestevalian · 29/09/2023 20:39

I wouldn't buy clothes , too personal .

I'd buy something trendy and gold from missoma

Busygoingblah · 29/09/2023 20:40

Doc martens have a pretty good sale on right now. You could probably get her a pair of boots for £100 and they go with so many styles.

simonthedog · 29/09/2023 20:40

Dr Marten boots

My daughter is a blue eyed redhead and silver jewellery doesn’t work for her. Her best look is rose gold

longestlurkerever · 29/09/2023 20:41

A jacket of some kind? Or take her shopping to choose something?

Miriam101 · 29/09/2023 20:42

What about some really nice perfume? The kind that is expensive enough you don’t want to buy it yourself

PineappleActivate · 29/09/2023 20:58

Gold jewellery but not earrings in case she wants to return them-ypu could 0ut the receipt in an envelope.
Clothes-bright green, yellow, orange/autumnal colours, camel colours, tomato (warm) red, terracotta, dusky pink always looks good on redheads. Maybe a jumper?
Clothes styles are difficult though. Depending how close you are to her, what about taking her for a shopping trip for some clothes/item of clothing with a coffee and cake or lunch.

Edited

Agreed - I have red hair and blue eyes and rose gold is my go to.

And pink. Lots of pink 😀

PineappleActivate · 29/09/2023 21:02

A scarf and matching gloves? In a fun colour or multicoloured.

pizzaHeart · 29/09/2023 21:08

I wouldn’t buy cashmere jumper unless you know that she wants it. It’s quite expensive and needs careful washing. And by the way I absolutely adore cashmere but not for that age group, especially if she is at uni or going to uni.
I would buy her pretty box (e.g with the first letter of her name)and fill it with cash.
