You're a red-headed 18 year old. What do you want for your birthday?

DNiece 2 is nearing 18. Classic Celtic colouring. She likes clothes but, unlike DNiece 1, who is 100% athleisure, I find buying clothes for her tricky as she has quite varied style, so it's hit and miss.

I want something that's a bit of a treat and that she will want to wear for a while, but not necessarily something that she is going to want to keep forever - I'd rather she had something she will enjoy now. Budget is about £100 as I will also be giving her some cold, hard cash 😉

Is a cashmere jumper too boring? If a jumper, what colour? I feel like people always give red-heads green, so it might be nice to give something different.

Or jewellery? She doesn't wear a lot but does have some necklaces. Would you go with silver or gold for her colouring?

She doesn't really wear make up and she's not into bags. Her hobby is a super-niche sport, so not something I can really buy for. Unfortunately her parents had a messy divorce so I can't ask her mum and my DB will not have a clue about fashion.

TIA

You sound like a fab aunty.
Could you take her shopping with you and let her choose something herself?

Dd is a redhead although much younger but green really brings out the colour of her hair and her eyes.

Trainers! DS GF is early 20s now (18 when first met) but she always wants trainers.

Hopefully I will soon, but we don’t live in the same country and I want her to have something to unwrap on her actual birthday.

A voucher, teenagers are fussy buggers.

Personally, I'd take them shopping if that was an option and factor in a nice lunch or cake& coffee stop. Then you'd get to spend a nice afternoon with them too. Tell them what the price limit is and to choose something they like. They might like something like a good pair of jeans or nice trainers and those are impossible to buy without trying on.

Pigtailsandall · 30/09/2023 10:32

Ah, just saw the message above that you don't live in the same country...shame!

I'd then be inclined to go with the nice classic but cute piece of gold jewellery.

I wouldn't buy clothes - it's such a personal thing and she won't appreciate cashmere.

Experiences would be a much better gift for an 18 year old.

Is Colour me beautiful still a thing? I was bought this as a gift once and I was surprised that as a red head with blue eyes I could get away with wearing more colours than I'd realised, even certain shades of red!

It might not be exactly what you have in mind and maybe not for an 18th birthday but I enjoyed it.

Same! This is exactly where my list of colours above comes from. My mum was obsessed and took me to get it done, but redheads are actually v easy to 'diagnose'. You can only be one of two (warm) options and it will be determined by eye colour.
