The Perfect Grey Jumper

NancyStStacey · 28/09/2023 19:28

I have spent the last 20 years it feels, trying to find the perfect grey jumper, but they always end up not being quite right in some way or being poor quality and looking like dishrags after a couple of washes

I kind of want it to feel expensive and casual and slightly oversized, the kind you can throw on and look effortlessly stylish (in my head anyway).
I've seen this one by White Company, wbich isn't oversized but looks nice. Any other recommendations?

I'm also obsessed by the ultimate grey jumper. I found one a few years ago and I wore it to death. It was asymmetrical with a longer back than front. I've never found another to come close and wish I'd bought two at the outset.

The one you've posted is lovely and now, dammit, I may have to buy yet another grey jumper! But I'll get rid of all the duffs that I've bought and they just don't cut the mustard. I reckon I have five that come into that category!

EllaPaella · 01/10/2023 13:11

I love the White Company one
I also have been searching for the holy grail of grey jumpers for many years. So far this is my favourite in terms of quality Finisterre

NancyStStacey · 01/10/2023 13:18

@Mxflamingnoravera @EllaPaella don't get the White Company one unless you can see it in person, it looks nice online but is crazily thin in real life and doesn't look at all like it does on the picture.

@BangingOn love that Sezane Louise jumper - has anyone bought Sezane knitwear, does it wash well?

@SorrelForbes I have unfortunately had too many Hush jumpers that look great online but are terrible quality, to venture into their knitwear again.

@kryptonfactor I really like that Anthropolgie jumper, have you had one longer than a week, if so how is the bobble/rag factor?

@Notcontent If I add up the cost of all the disappointing grey jumpers I have bought over the years, I could probably afford to have some artisanal goat herder hand spin and then knit me the perfect custom jumper

Oh I agree!! I am constantly on the whole “buy less, buy better, buy stuff you will want to wear” mission but it’s very difficult to implement in practice.

Notcontent · 01/10/2023 14:01

@EllaPaella what is finisterre quality like? Will it last a while without horrible bobbling?

DameDoom · 01/10/2023 14:07

Am a massive fan of aethel cashmere. The V neck is lovely but the crucial cardigan is even nicer and so flattering. It’s not cheap but worth every penny and then some.

The White Company stuff doesn't really last.

EllaPaella · 01/10/2023 14:52

@Notcontent I've been really impressed with it, I got it earlier this year and worn it quite a lot - no bobbling so far.

Notcontent · 01/10/2023 15:19

Thank you @EllaPaella would you say that it’s oversized - ie if I am a usually a size 6 on top, should I get a 6?

JanglingJack · 01/10/2023 15:24

I'm looking for similar!

Just a good slung on, bit slouchy - not effort made here (apart from the tills a chinging!).

I can't do roll necks any more, or turtle necks, I'd have to go V shaped or like the on in OP (slash?!)

Autumnunmasks · 01/10/2023 15:31

Me too

EllaPaella · 01/10/2023 16:40

@Notcontent i'm usually a 10 but got the 8 and it's the perfect fit

NancyStStacey · 01/10/2023 16:47

@JanglingJack I want an air of insousiance, like I just look fabulous with no effort. Perhaps I am expecting too much from my knitwear!
I prefer boat neck, slash neck or crew neck, definitely no cowls, preferably no V's.

My favourite jumper ever was an asymmetric grey one from Jigsaw. A mid-grey with paler flecks, a high neck and cut on the bias with a slanted bottom back and front. Probably late 1990s/early 2000s. Loved that jumper - but the moths got it in the end (they always win).

Some great suggestions here, but the ££££ of some!

LunaNorth · 01/10/2023 21:25

@EllaPaella does that jumper come in grey? I’m only seeing blue and oatmeal options on the website, even though the picture looks grey.

Penelope1703 · 01/10/2023 21:51

I just bought this one www.americanvintage-store.com/gb/en/YAN18DH23-GRISCH.html

Persiana · 01/10/2023 21:59

@NancyStStacey I am similar, always craving grey but not sure it actually suits. I find navy or cream looks better on me. My best knitwear is from navygrey, finisterre and baujken

EllaPaella · 01/10/2023 22:08

@LunaNorth mine is grey, had it quite a while - maybe they don't do in grey any longer

LunaNorth · 01/10/2023 22:11

Ah, ok. Thank you.

EasterIssland · 01/10/2023 22:17

The Arket one Looks really nice!

Stoic123 · 01/10/2023 22:32

Waystation · 29/09/2023 10:31

I can second this - perfect! Soft comfy and it has that casual but classic look

Third vote. Wearing this exact one right now and it's gorgeous. Bought the navy version a while back and no bobbling - and I've worn it quite a bit.

I've also had bobbling issues with White Company. Bought two cashmere jumpers (at the same time) and they both needed to be relegated to indoor loungewear within a few months because of uncontrollable pilling. Lovely to look at but I won't buy from there again. H&M has also been problematic but Cos has been ok for me (particularly thicker cashmere).

Notcontent · 01/10/2023 23:18

@Penelope1703 that is very nice but I have a bit of a love and hate relationship with AV knitwear. They are all blends of different fibres and some seem to bobble almost immediately, after a couple of wears.

EmmaPaella · 02/10/2023 14:13

I always want a grey crew neck jumper but then think they make me look washed out and round necks also don’t suit me. Apart from this I love them!
