What do you think about dogs in a hair salon?

I was there today and heard this yelping and there was a poodle sitting on its owner's lap. I was gobsmacked. Have you had this experience?

Yes. I went to a new salon recently and there was a dog wandering around, it was the owner's apparently. I felt quite pissed off as I don't like dogs and I wouldn't have booked there had I known. I did mention to the stylist and there was a half hearted attempt to keep the dog away, but when they were distracted it still managed to be sniffing around my feet and bag. I felt really on edge the whole time.

I don't think it's appropriate at all.

LastHives · 19/09/2023 20:51

One has also appeared at my nail place too - either that or I am imagining dogs!

Dogs are everywhere now.
I don't like it.

Johnnylewis · 19/09/2023 20:52

They're literally everywhere now.

LastHives · 19/09/2023 20:52

Seemingly there is no law against it and it is up to the owners.

Not as bad as the male ddog pissing up a counter at a piercing place I took dd to. We left...

CatamaranViper · 19/09/2023 20:57

I mean, of course it's up to the owners, and so it should be.
But it should be well advertised if somewhere is dog friendly or if the owner/staff dogs are likely to be around. This means that customers, like OP, can make an informed decision.

Personally I like having dogs around even though I don't have one of my own, so I probably would go somewhere like this.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/09/2023 20:59

My salon has a dog. I love him. My hairdresser owns both the salon and the dog, and I always joke to him that I only come for the dog. I did ask what would happen if someone was scared of dogs/just didn’t like them, and he said he would get one of the juniors to take him out, plus he also has a bed in the staff room.

thatsabigtree · 19/09/2023 21:01

Jesus the previous dog hating thread hasn't even finished yet! There's usually at least a few days break between them!

I don't think this should be allowed. It's not fair on other customers, staff and the dogs - it's a noisy environment, busy, full of sprays etc., why would you take your dog there for several hours to wait for you? Ridiculous.

Fishandchipsatthebeach · 19/09/2023 21:03

I don’t want dogs in a hair salon, no

MartyFunkhouser · 19/09/2023 21:04

Yes. I go to one of those terribly trendy places in London where the stylists rent a chair. There’s usually at least 3 dogs running around. I love it.

muddyford · 19/09/2023 21:05

Mine has a visiting cat. Food on the floor and everything. I said if it's going to be there I would rethink whether I get my hair cut there or not. It's not appropriate in my opinion.

MajesticWhine · 19/09/2023 21:05

I'm a big fan of dogs but I don't really want them at the hairdressers. For me it is an expensive and relaxing treat to go and get my hair done, and having dogs in there can potentially degrade the experience.

MidnightOnceMore · 19/09/2023 21:08

I haven't had this but wouldn't like it, there's a time and a place.

As much as I love dogs I don't want one jumping up on me and potentially ruining my hair that's sat being coloured in foils.
A single dog belonging to the owner, that's well behaved, fine.
Letting in any dog, not fine. You don't know how they'll behave!

I can assure you this happened today. I didn't see the other thread and even if so what?

LastHives · 19/09/2023 21:11

You pay a load of money for hair services and have to listen to a yapping dog? No thanks. I did mention it to the stylist though. Unfortunately the owner wasn't there. It's a big expensive salon too.

Not appropriate/shouldn’t be allowed

People are so prissy. Just don’t go back or go somewhere else. Don’t imagine everyone should think like you.

They should warn people in advance though. What if somebody had an allergy?

AnxiousPangolin · 19/09/2023 21:24

I took my puppy to the hairdresser with me for a quick fringe trim (me, not the dog) but she didn’t like it and I wouldn’t do it again, definitely not for a longer appointment.

FionnulaTheCooler · 19/09/2023 21:29

I never went back to a certain salon after the owner spent so much time pissing about with her dog, trying to get it settled in its crate that my appointment ended up being about half an hour late. Its unprofessional in my opinion, leave it at home and get a dog walker to look in on it.

mondaytosunday · 19/09/2023 21:32

Wouldn't bother me, especially if it was a little one in someone's lap. It would bother me if any dog was constantly yapping.

Sidebeforeself · 19/09/2023 21:35

The best ever salon experience I had was when the hairdresser brought me back from the sink, said hang on..then promptly put a kitten in my lap! I can imagine many people would be appalled but I loved it!
