Fat on holiday - SOS!

Ilovepearjuice · 30/08/2023 13:16

I’m off to Spain on holiday next week and my body confidence is at an all time low. I’m currently a size 18-20 and whilst my goal is to lose weight, I can’t do anything in 5 days!

I'm desperate to wear some casual day time things that are “normally” worn on holiday eg. shorts and T shirts, wide legged trousers etc, but I have an awful overhang belly from an gynae op when I was a teen and everything just looks crap. If I wear shorts with a tucked in top, I’m worried that my stomach is emphasised even more!

Any suggestions on clothes that would suit my very-much-apple shape (see pic) would be greatly appreciated.

My usual style is midi dresses, jeans with oversized jumpers, a bit bright, funky and “youthful” (I’m only 34!). I could just wear my usual midi dresses but I would like a more casual look during the day!

Thank you all! ❤️

More
Now for next year!

LivStanshall · 30/08/2023 18:23

Glad you’ve found some things you like, OP. I’m also an apple shape and I find straight legged shorts make me look really unbalanced. I prefer something with a wider cut and a slightly longer length.

NancyPickford · 30/08/2023 18:40

I am off to Greece at the weekend and I'm the fattest I've ever been (5' 3" and a big size 16/small 18). I have wasted so many holidays in the past when I was a 10, a 12, and a 14 worrying about what folk thought. I wasn't even fat then! I now realise there will always be women much slimmer than me - but there will also be women much fatter than me - so why let this impact on my holiday. What I have done this time is spend a few weeks concentrating on my skin, exfoliating, moisturising and will get a fake tan too. Then I will relax and enjoy myself. Maybe I'll be slim next year. Who knows? Have a great holiday.

So refreshing to hear women of all shapes and sizes are feeling body positive, comfortable and enjoying their holidays - rightly so!

I'm so glad I made this thread… your comments and fab clothing suggestions have made me feel all glowy inside 😊

Also, I’ve been a size 10 and a size 22 in the past - the overhang never goes away! It’s basically like having had a C-section so hopefully some people can understand what I mean.

@MorrisZapp is right! Embrace the tuck. This is an amazing clip that illustrates it so well how to dress an apron tum. Watching these lady has really helped me understand how to dress my apple shape.

Shorts are tricky on apple shapes as they need to be elasticated to fit comfortably around the tum but then that makes the legs overly wide.

What bits of your body do you feel comfortable exposing? What bits do you like?

Out of interest do you know if this is the same Yours sold by Next?

Yes it’s the same. This dress is full priced on the Next website, which is why I linked the Yours website… I was actually looking for the navy colour but only the pink seems to be available.

Feelingsolost88 · 30/08/2023 20:40

Hello OP
I'm bigger than you and I've just come back from Greece. I wore maxi dresses in stretchy material (cheap ones off ebay) and also maxi skirts and vest tops. Cycling shorts and vest tops also for casual day wear. Also those floaty type beach cover ups for over the swimsuit. Honestly do not worry , you will see a variety of shapes and sizes on holiday anyway. People don't bat an eyelid.
Have a lovely time xx

Ok so - thanks to you all - I’ve bought the following:

Bright pink Tu linen shorts and a relaxed white cotton T-shirt to tuck in

A floral high waisted bikini(!!) from YOURS

A floral midaxi dress from YOURS

A leopard print maxi skirt from ASOS

An abstract print monochrome shirt dress from ASOS

…and a heck load of jewellery from Accessorize

All next day delivery and I’m very excited!!!

Fabulous!!! Please update us when you've had the try on!

I've just come back from my hols and so many shapes and sizes are absolutely rocking their bodies! Get your legs out, embrace your beauty and have a fabulous time!

waistchallenge · 31/08/2023 08:46

I forgot to say, I'm in my early forties now and I wasn't happy with my figure at your age. Unfortunately, it's only now that I'm older that I realise I actually looked way better than I thought. I had (and have!) negative points like anyone but I did have shiny long hair, a good waist/hip ratio even if overweight, nice skin etc.

Do just enjoy your looks, I know that I would have rolled my eyes at your age but it's true.

GettingStuffed · 31/08/2023 12:46

I have a skort and it's really flattering, I'm a 16-18.
I have mainly mid thigh length shorts, bought for this summer (ha ha) but I'm going on a Caribbean holiday in November so I'll wear them then.

The best thing you can do is be confident in yourself very few people actually notice what other people are wearing unless it's either really beautiful or very ugly, the in between is just ignored.

soupmaker · 31/08/2023 13:04

OP, I'm the same shape as you and also had similar surgery so feel your pain.

I went on holiday this year the biggest I've ever been. I bought a couple of bikinis while there and just didn't give a toss. Made me feel so much happier than a hot one piece.

I have good legs so wear mid thigh shorts, with linen or cotton tops. Found brilliant linen mix tunic dresses in Asda. Also find t-shirt dresses work well.

Enjoy your holiday.

SansaClegane · 31/08/2023 13:54

OP you sound like a lovely person!
I've had 3 c-sections so I know what you mean about the overhang. For years, I'd only wear swimsuits, and even them I'd cover up with towels / kaftans / sarongs. I think the very best thing i discovered is to stop giving a fuck!
That's literally it. I happily sit by the pool in my skimpy bikini now, flabby stomach and fat thighs and all. Who cares? Nobody has a perfect body.
Same goes for clothing, I wear short shorts, any dresses I like, even started with cropped tops and T-shirts this year Grin which I'd never have considered previously!
People don't really look, and if they do, usually not as critically as you may view yourself.
Hope you have a great holiday!

mondaytosunday · 31/08/2023 14:32

Are you happy with arms on show? Then a sleeveless to top and flowy skirt is cool and flattering.
I'm also a big fan of kaftans, though that doesn't work in a city, but at a beach and local towns is fine. You can get ones that cinch in slightly below the bust if you want a bit of shape. But they go from beach to market to bar to restaurant.

I'm a very short 16-18 and have been watching MM Personal Styling on YouTube for a while and the video below helped me choose clothes for my holiday which I've never have bought otherwise. I know the model in the video is older than you, but the ideas/suggestions are pretty good. There are loads more videos on her channel which might be of use.

My son's GF is a similar size to you, in her 20s. She looks lovely in a couple of short jersey dresses which are fitted at the top, then with tiers which she wears with cycle shorts.

I was going to suggest having a look at Yours clothing - but I see you've already been shopping !

I love that Next dress @Gooseysgirl
